I believe the "coated" feeling you hear might be coming from the fact that the actual streaming audio is a vinyl rip. They tweeted about that a few months back.
As someone who saw them live immediately after dropping infest the rats nest, I can tell you nothing was ironic about the storm of moshing and head banging that occurred that night.
There’s a lot of the band you’re missing by not going backwards. They are, often, a heavy band. There’s nothing ironic about them, they probably have some of the rowdiest shows of any touring band
I know that you are not a climate scientist, but as a physicist, I am a little worried by your dismissiveness of climate change. I haven't even listened to the album, and yes the lyrics do seem corny, but this is not just a political issue that 'some people' care about or consider a pressing issue. It truly is the greatest threat that humanity has ever faced. In the coming decades we will witness tens of thousands of deaths, mass migrations and the complete collapse of our ecosystems. Probably shouldn't be so dismissive and read the IPCC report. Edit: Perhaps this is due to American discourse and its lack of urgency, but trust me, we are screwed and this should be taken deadly serious. Love you prof.
My favorite tune was the hypnogogic "Garden Goblin". Lyrics are silly, but there is an eerie quality to it that keeps me coming back. Especially that "Here in the garden we're safe. For now. Behind the trees, the Garden Goblin's looking at me." Imagining a goblin peeking at you behind a tree in a, presumably safe, garden. The music is poppy and upbeat, but the chords have an uncanny delivery and quality to them. Just brilliant stuff. GOBLINS R REAL
been wondering if this song is a nod to Masayoshi Takanaka's The Rainbow Goblins... totally agree this track is great, def one of my favorites on the album for sure
@@boltron7674 haha I totally thought this was a Cookiedawg song. I would love to see Skye listen to Pipe-eye. Would a song like Trust Fund Baby hit his musical funny-bone?
That name is no mistake. This is as close to a "here's our career so far in eighty minutes" as a band with 20 studio LPs in twelve years, all in different styles under their belt can reasonably manage. omnium gatherum /ˌɒmnɪəm ˈɡaðərəm/ noun a collection of miscellaneous people or things. "an omnium gatherum of anecdotes" EDIT: I´m also just a tiny bit disappointed that a language professor didn't immediately go and look up the meaning of a phrase like that, it's so beautiful and intriguing when you see it.
17:20 very keen. You can definitely tell that Cav takes inspiration from Jaki Liebezeit's motorik. He also has that same Can setup with the bottom heads removed from the toms.
A few items to note: - Rap/Hip Hop in Australia? There's plenty, and its great. One of the things I like most about it is that there is a very strong thread of protest running through the genre highlighting social issues and, particularly, indigenous issues. I know you never look back, but if your son (or anyone else) wants a random sample try these - some old, some new, some political, some just bangers: hilltop hoods - nosebleed section the herd - 0.77 jimblah - march Baker Boy - Meditjin L-FRESH The LION - 1 in 100,000 Ab original - dumb things - Rupert Murdoch was Australian until he changed his citizenship for business reasons. Those Australians who abhor his personal political views and his willingness to express them through his media empire are embarrassed by what he has achieved globally. His businesses still dominate the media landscape in Australia and he is considered to be highly influential in our domestic politics - he is probably a more dominant right-wing figure in Australia than he is in the US (where he has a lot more competition). - This is KGs 20th studio album.
Great call out on Can and Cav's drumming on Dripping Tap. I know you don't want to but I hope you take a dip in to the Gizz's back catalogue. There is some stuff that is just really fun; Polygondwanaland, Infest the Rat's Nest, freaking Nonagon Infinity is a classic. There are SO many more layers to this Gizz onion.
Fun fact, King Gizz fans do call themselves Gizzheads so you hit the nail on the head straight away with that one. Definitely try make an effort to see them live. They're touring basically everywhere in the US at the moment and it'd be a huge opportunity missed not to go see them. Definitely THE definitive King Gizzard experience. Loved the review!
Great review! I just had the privilege of seeing Gizz for the first time in Vegas on Easter sunday. It was pretty damn amazing. Truly an experience. The variety of fans made it so enjoyable. To answer your question, headbang unironically. AMA
The nice thing about KGLW is that if a new album come out and you don’t like it, there’ll be a new one in about six months that you probably will like.
That synth on Magenta Mountain has been stuck in my ear for months and I can't get rid of it. Those same 3-4 notes on repeat. The earworm to end all earworms.
When you asked what do you do at a Gizz concert when they change song styles, I remember when I saw Gizz the place turns from headbang mosh pit to a huge blues boogie very quickly. Band is just a party
Another great review as always, Skye! if you haven't already, I highly recommend you checking out their album Infest the Rats' Nest if you want more of their raw, metal environmentalism
This album may be my new favorite. I’m a massive gizzard fan already and this being their 20th studio album there’s a lot to stack up against but it shows that the band continues to push themselves and music as we know it with more variety than I ever thought I could want on an album. My standouts are ambergris, the garden goblin and candles. A note on ambergris from an aspiring marine biologist; ambergris is produced in the bile ducts of sperm whales and is commonly used for perfume, incense, an aphrodisiac and medicine. A pound of this “white gold” goes for $10,000 - making whale hunts extremely profitable. Sperm whales we’re also often hunted for the waxy substance produced in the large parts of their head known as the spermaceti organ. Spermeceti was widely used for candles among other wax products. Prior to whaling sperm whales may have numbered 1.1 million specimens, today down to perhaps 300,000. Apropos, they worked on double standards. That the narrator, a whale, has the right to not be murdered no matter how valuable it’s death may be. I love how the lyrics are sung in a slow melodic melancholy as if the song itself were sung by a whale it all helps paint the visual so well. Simply put, I love whale rock 🐳 🪨 See ya May 21st in Columbus Gizzard!!
We do have aboriginal rappers in australia, but I don't think there is much of a "scene" especially compared to white aussie rappers. I think the peak of indigenous people in rap was the early 2000s
Aussie hip hop is getting some more airtime now-a-days, buts nothing compared to the Hiphop presence in other countries. Indigenous + non-white Aussie hiphop artists are getting much more attention for sure but I feel the small pool of homegrown artists has been very Anglo for a long time. Big ups to Genesis and Kwame atm To me Gizz here are doing a neat Beastie Boys impression here. trademark by me, i thought of it first ha
@Far Stox I see that. I was never much into orb or pipe eye though so it makes sense why I didn’t really vibe with it. Glad other are enjoying though. I know the will be countless gizz albums in the future that I will enjoy more so I’m not upset in the slightest.

It's even worse than that. By 2004 we'll all be underwater.
Getting into KGLW was the best thing that has happened to me in awhile. Great album
generally we'd refer to the metal here as "thrash metal"
Stoner metal is fitting too
Odd time signature thrash
21:53 that trumpet is from Yemaya One by Barney McAll, song was sampled for Kepler 22b
They’re a lot more like King Crimson than Weezer

I've always thought 12 min was the perfect jam song time. Mostly basing that off of Cicatriz ESP by Mars Volta I guess
Still the best breakdown videos out there, but clearly having an "edgy" day.
(Phish and climate change/activist music bashing? C'mon, man.)
You need to hear nonagon infinity
Other than what some others said there is a massive drill scene in Western Sydney that you should look into I think it's interesting

That flute jam you refer to on Sure shot is a sample from a song called "howlin' for Judy" by Jeremy Steig. It's quite a long flute jam!
was looking forward to this review!
i love persistence though, i think it's super catchy and funny
"Oh yeah!" Well put, Monsieur. I cannot wait for this album to be released on vinyl.
My favourite band!! Seen them 9 times in Melbourne. 🇦🇺🇦🇺
Seen em 9 times in South Sudan 🇸🇸

its stoner metal, or more specifically stoner/thrash kinda like High on Fire
Australian Rappers? Sampa the Great, Tkay Maidza, Elsy Wameyo to start with
Tkay Maidza is a very good rapper from Australia
Cavs is a drumming inspiration.
it really is.
oh yeah indeed professor
Definitely check out nonagon infinity. I think it’s by far their best album. A continuous loop that goes hard af
Surprised at the Weezer comparison. I always hear Ween from folks.
Gizz are touring in the US right now!
I def thought you were gonna say they remind you of Ween.
Gaia might be doom metal/maybe even sludge
How do you struggle so much with the pronunciation of the album title?
i'd love to see a video from you on Gil Scott-Heron
my skip is actually the dripping tap, too damn intense. I Love Magenta Mountain as an intro
New jack white album!

haven't watched this review yet but i'll just say some of the rap verses on this album are a bit cringeworthy.
Is there a reason why he refuses to listen to the older stuff?
I think he is missing out on so many good albums that would blow away his expectations
it eco-thrash metal
Honestly this was the first gizz album I dont like. Some stand out songs but most of them werent that good imo
