I wouldn’t fault you for describing the album as thrash, mostly because I think a lot of it could accurately be described as thrash, at least by me. However in true gizzard style they manage to shove a bunch of different metal styles into one album. There are influences from thrash and speed metal (think Mötorhead and Metallica) in the more straightforward parts of the album like earlier sections in Witchcraft and Motor Spirit, as well as most of Gila Monster.
I would say for the most part, this album should be classified as prog metal (think Tool, Meshuggah, and Gojira). This can be heard in the complex time signatures, jarring and unpredictable melodies exemplified on Dragon, complex and often polyrhythmic drums, and the heavily detuned, palm muted chugging displayed on Supercell, especially in its chorus.
Finally, I would say Petrodraconic Apocalypse uses elements of doom and sludge metal (Mastodon and Sleep come to mind in this case). I would say that a lot of the slower and less aggressive sections would fall into this category, especially the slower sections on Motor Spirit with the heavy and low distortion on the guitar, a the more psychedelic parts off Witchcraft, and the middle section of Flamethrower before the synths kick in.

One of my favourite things about this album is how consciously campy it is. A lot of metal, especially lyrically, is campy is hell while trying to be BADASS and SCARY, but it just ends up being unintentionally goofy. That's why Stu's quote "but it's also about dragons and witches and shit" is so perfect. Yeah we now this is ridiculous, it's supposed to be! Because it's supposed to be fun. This is a band that takes their musical craft very seriously, but not themselves. They just want to use their talent to make fun music.

Great review! I always feel like what makes king gizzard so special is that there is always a strong sincerity in what they are doing while also not taking themselves serious at all. Best example for me is the music video to Dragon - it’s a total homage/persiflage on 80s/90s (black) metal music videos, while also being just a really good metal music video lol

There is a lot of thrash influence on this album, and as someone else said it's also very progressive in a Tool sort of vein. But another metal subgenre on display on this album is stoner metal. That's where a lot of low, chugging riffs and classic heavy metal worship comes from.
I remember last October when Ice Death came out I really really hoped they would take the awesome jammy style they mastered on that album and fuse it with their older dabbling in metal. And then that's exactly what they did. Flamethrower might be my favorite King Gizz album of all time now.
I think a word that doesn't come up enough with King Gizzard and especially their lyrics is camp. It's ridiculous and over the top and dumb, and from a lyrical perspective it's technically just kinda bad. But that's what makes it fun. And for the record, I really think they've improved as lyricists pretty dramatically over the course of their career. On their early albums the lyrics were just whatever random nonsense they could throw together in a half hour to throw over the top of the instrumentals that they actually cared about. As they've gotten older, they've really leaned much more into the silliness. Like I said, their lyrics are pretty ridiculous and dumb, but they're much more intentional than they used to be and I think they're a perfect fit for the oftentimes over-the-top instrumentation of their music.
I don't know if you know this, but this is the first of two albums they're releasing this year that they're calling their yin-yang albums. This one was thrash, stoner, and prog metal and I think the other one's supposed to be a techno album. My understanding is that both are meant to cover themes of environmental destruction.

Insightful. I would say that Flamethrower is a sleeper and (deliberate) surprise. I'd add that they are treating vocals as another instrument with its own timbre. Lyrics are becoming progressively more end-of-times, which appeals to some.

    • @brendanspaulding7930
      @brendanspaulding7930 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’d honestly completely disagree with the lyrics aspect. They’ve always been intentionally goofy, but they’ve consistently made some of the most compelling lyrics of modern music imo that extends far beyond camp. I find Stu to be equivalent to a ray davies.
While I think there is certainly a case to make that 12 bar bruise and willoughbys beach just had lyrics thrown on top of instrumentals they loved, that certainly can’t be said about any of their other albums past the narrative driven eyes like the sky. Float along has some of my favorite early lyricism by the band. Head on/pill is about an unwanted and overly introspective drug trip that is surprisingly effective; 30 past seven is wonderful ode to early morning blues and is utterly honest and earnest; and float along is just a really good piece of sentimental advice. Oddments has the communicative and sadly hopeful homeless man in adidas; the relatable and sincere work this time; and the earnest love for a simple thing on Vegemite. Their entire discography is littered with moments like these from float along forward, and these are just the highlights from those two albums. Everything in between is just as honest and reflective.
I think it can be easy to skim over king gizzards lyrics. They have a way of taking stories and topics and making them incredibly catchy with ridiculous chants to blurt out during the chorus, but that’s just because they’re so damn good at writing. I think you’re missing out on so much to do with the band in their earlier stages if you dismiss it as thrown together. Their MO has always been serious and well thought out topics, stories, and thoughts displayed with utterly goofy rhetoric. Vomit coffin, as silly as it is, is about a lifeless and unfeeling but fully conscious robot that’s attempting to feel, even if only through the painful process of gagging.
I do think certain aspects of their music is silly and campy, but I’d never call it dumb.

I wouldn't call the album Thrash Metal (Infest The Rats Nest released by them in 2019 however is) but it does have a lot thrash metal elements.
I say it's closer to "Porg Metal" but not stuff like Dream Theater but more like Tool. Lots of well.. jamming and interesting things going on with the rhythm. It's like they took the jammy aspects of their last few albums and fused it with the sounds of Metal.

I would disagree and say, that it is a thrash metal album with a lot of influences from prog metal and others. I think it has overall a lot more of a forward momentum, compared to what prog albums typically have. But the proggyness is undeniably there.
I would also add speed metal to the list, i mean just listen to converge - it is basically motörhead.
Lastly, I also hear a lot of Tool in it, but i would also add Mastodon as a major influence, and maybe a bit of voivod as well (which brings us full circle back to prog metal 😅)

    • @iliasmastoris529

When you describe the band making music for people that 'remember 80's metal', I have to push back. If you've been to a live show, you might recognize a not small portion of the audience are young punks and queerfolk. I gravitated to the band first and foremost for the sound and camp of Nonagon Infinity. They have a pinch of Tenacious D in them in that while they homage those older works, they do it in a tongue-in-cheek way and don't take it so seriously, but also preach a gospel of anticapitalism, equity, and environmentalism. They're a straight up modern hippie band.

I think calling this jammy is inaccurate, at least how I consider jamming. Jamming tends to sound more jazzy and actually improvisational, like “ice, death.” This album is super meticulous due to its polyrhythmic nature, if something fell out of place it’d mess with the overall sound of the song. For the not being for the dungeon dweller, metal listening, DND playing kids part, I disagree. I think you should keep in mind that KGLW has always made more rowdy, heavier music, like Murder of the Universe and that Metal itself comes from 60's psych rock getting louder. I am mostly a metal listener but I also like rock, and with King Gizz I prefer the heavier sound I get that they also make jammier lighter stuff and that's one side of their audience but the band isn't as separated from harder rock as you make it out to be.

sorry for the long comment. great video as always
I'm not sure why it took me a good 5 years to go from being a moderate King Gizzard fan to a huge one, but seeing them live for the first time recently probably helped a lot. I can understand why people see them as gimmicky with all the genre switching stuff. From a distance people brush off as a novelty. But really digesting the whole catalog as well as live shows made me understand how they blend everything together into one "Gizzverse" instead of just having a bunch of disparate artistic statements. The fact that they can have a live show that's basically 1/3 jam band, 1/3 metal, and 1/3 a bunch of other stuff, yet have it all sound cohesive. It's not just some psychedelic band that suddenly switches gears to a Megadeth pastiche, it's somehow one complete expression.
I've been thinking about the sort of Grateful Dead -> Phish -> King Gizzard lineage that you mentioned before and I think what actually makes King Gizzard special is the fact that they AREN'T really a true jam band. They ride the precipice in a way no one has done before. I previously wanted them to become a full-on jam band, but now I think them being an extremely unique quasi-jam band is even better. Comparing all these 3 bands has only made me appreciate them all more. In the same way that Phish distinguished themselves by taking a big leap away from Grateful Dead, King Gizzard has managed to create their own musical universe. All 3 of these bands did something that no one else did before or will ever do again, while some other jam band successors like Goose (still great) end up just being like a Phish Jr. The similarities between the 3 bands' arcs are endlessly fascinating too. Ex: The way Michael Cavanaugh drummed better after the 2nd drummer left just like what happened in the early 70s Dead. I also see some parallels to Phish's career in the early 90s before they fully started embracing maximum jamminess. All 3 bands have an occasional cringe factor that put me off at first but became endearing. All 3 bands are very daunting to try to put a friend onto.
To me, genre-wise this album sounds like a mix between prog metal like Mastodon/Tool, the stoner metal band High on Fire, and thrash metal. (all mixed with King Gizzard's sound). Since they're King Gizzard they still end up putting their unique spin on it anyway.
