- Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Kingdom of the Lion.
The reserve is only 21 km from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants and the 15 or so leopards are rarely seen. The most common larger mammal is the endemic purple-faced langur.
An interesting phenomenon is that birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless greater racket-tailed drongo and the noisy orange-billed babbler. Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal and Sri Lanka blue magpie.
Reptiles include the endemic green pit viper and hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic common birdwing butterfly and the inevitable leeches.

Sinharaja. One of the best places I have visited. Nature at it's best before recently due to no attention from the authorities it is becoming increasingly vulnerable. Government authorities attention is needed to safeguard this highly respected no. 1 forest in the world in small range forests category.

I have just visited there (13th April,2017). Though I’m a Sri Lankan, It was my first visit to the Sinharaja Rain forest, with my nature loving Chinese friend whose main purpose of her Sri Lanka tour was to conquer the Sinharaja before she hit Amazon, which is her long time childhood dream. She was so much impressed and screamed several times “凄い“、in English “Amazing”.
During the journey, what flashes in front of my eyes were thick forest, kind of what we have seen in Jurassic Park, and amazing
and massive mysterious greenery which constantly had been arousing my curiosity “what secrets could be hidden there?”
For the record, we have seen several endemic birds and other species. Magical mysterious Sinharaja, You are a beauty!!
(Oh, forget to mention, the guide was the laziest man in the world but, thank you google, we had an amazing trip!!) See
you again, definitely.

Thank you for the info.The Sinharaja forest seems to hold plant species in different altitudes and revived at different times through interventions at reforestation and conservation practices and also through natural propagation. Please consider forest conservation both for the plant species and animal species. The questions are also for the wild germplasm- plant species, relevant to the crop genetic resources in agriculture.
