In my opinion, Monster Hunter has the best learning curve in all of video games. You start off pretty slowly with the Great Jaggi, which is easy for experienced players, but can be quite the challenge for new players. Then it slowly ramps up in difficulty with monsters like Rathalos and Tigrex to finally beat your sorry ass to death with Rajang.
I know that clip is put at the end of every video, but I love that he asks "who was shitting in Rare's lunchboxes?" and then puts Ocelot on the screen. I mean, he's an antagonist in MGS3, but damn, he's never been portrayed as being that evil.

I've not played Strange Journey, since it's not available in Europe. And besides, most of the SMT catalogue that is available around the world is also available digitally, be it Persona, Nocturne, or Digital Devil Saga. But since I've not played SJ, I'm sticking to my guns with Nocturne.
You know for me there is a certaint point where i feel that a game is hard but fair or just plain old bullshit. For example games like Dark Souls, Meatboy or Hotline Miami are hard but fair because everytime i die it feels more like my own fault and by avoiding my mistake i can actually move on (although i probably will never be as good as some people are in Meatboy i just leave it at beating the game with a keyboard and your feet). This way the game encourages me to try again and get better as i move along. It also helps that a lot of hard but fair games don't really penalize you for dieing to often or if they do it mostly is just a minor inconvinience (like loosing all your souls in DS is pretty minor). And then you got the bullshitfest that are games like IWBTG, Lost Levels or Battletoads where even if you really put all manners of skill into it you still will fail over and over again and by the end it really is nothing but trial on error until you somehow beat a stage and can move on. That's not good designe that's just extending gametime by making it as hard as possible for the player to get through. And the biggest part for me is that games like these are just not fun when i have to see the game over screen 100+ times just to finally see the end credits and be done with the game.
Takeshi's Challenge. The whole game is basically that guy from Takeshi's Challenge/MXC trolling you the entire game. It's ridiculous, unintuitive, utterly unfair in ways Battletoards and IWBTG could only DREAM of being, includes solutions to puzzles that you would never in a million years figure out on your own and the game sure as hell isn't going to tell you, and anyone masochistic enough to play it all the way through to the end gets to watch the game basically make fun of you for wasting your time playing it.
That game isn't so much 'hard' as it is just a complete guessing game to figure out what to do. Once you know what to do, it's still not easy, but not nearly as hard as the games on this list.

+That Guy On The Street I have not beat this game yet. I got 2 hexagons and 3 pentagons, all in 2 hours. These 3 pentagon ranks i got were from hexagonist (this level is a pain. At least it has my favorite soundtrack in the game) and the first 2 hyper stages.
I agree with your number one choice. Other hard games made add a new gimmick or two each level but Battletoads switches how you need to play the game with each level, adding not only new obstacles but also new controls and new ways of navigating the levels. Getting good at Battletoads requires you to pretty much master 8 different games. And considering you have very limited lives and even more limited continues you will have very little time to practice a level before you have to complete it. And add to that all of the troll moves that will cost you a life if you don't know about it and a co-op that is only there to hinder the players and you have a game that seems to hate you on a very personal level.
Thank you for saying that Super Meat Boy is the least frustrating on this list, I'm tired of people who are terrible at platormers complaining that SMB is "impossible" and BS like that. I found it to be perfectly manageable...
With Battletoads, I always farmed lives hitting the crows in level 2 over and over. That's how I was able to last near the end of the game. I was so close to beating it!
...No... I don't care... Battletoads is cake compared to I Wanna Be The Guy, or I Wanna Be The Boshy... Both just ask for skills that you HAVE to practice for days to finish... Battletoads actually starts fairly easy instead of "Oh look, random apples... That fall down, and murder me... Great...".

You forgot the Order of Ecclesia. Recovery spots are sparse, you deal little damage, levelling up barely helps you, some bosses can be relentless, and every time you die early in the game, you must suffer one of the most terrifying visions of defeat. I remember dying and getting scared to the point of turning off the game & not picking it up for another hour.

P.S. Even though i did not play Ninja Giden black, i did play the Sigma version. And at least there are no birds, but there is a replacement: The ghost fish A.K.A. The "f@$% you" fish!!! At least they are in the last chapters. But they are not the only annoying thing you face! There is also Alma. She is the worst example of how to not make a hard boss! B.S. attacks? check! a 95% chance of dodging when in air and 50% chance when on ground? check! bad checkpoint placement before this boss? Check! A supernatural A.I.? CHECK!! To make things worse, she is the boss of chapter 9! It is a massive difficultity spike! Oh also, she has a final form you have to fight before the final 3 chapters, which should be burned alive then stabbed 6666 times then be forced to complete battletoads, then finally die in the same way as Komani!!! All the things that annoy me in her first form are 9001 times worse! Well, at least they place a checkpoint right before this fight.
Dark souls is such a good game, it perfectly teaches you everything you need to know right at the beginning, then tells you to figure the rest of the shit out yourself, but in the fair kind of way.
Super Meat Boy is a hard game. But it does, in no way at all, compare to the ball-crushing difficulties of games like F-Zero, Megaman 9, Rolling Thunder, etc. I rest my case.
I agree. I'm going through SMB right now (free game from XBOX), and While it is hard, I've managed to stay relatively calm while playing it. It's a game that actually tests skill, rather than IWBTG's cheap deaths.
+TerravancerYoh That wasn't hard, but it's more a game that requires a lot of grinding to beat, at least up until Paradox. After that, if you get the phoenix ra form, you pretty much have a 12.5% chance on the opening hand of winning the duel instantly (discard phoenix ra to summon battle mode ra) and the odds only increase from there. The only massive difficulty is building a deck that can let you survive until then. At least from my perspective (since I've played Reshef through to the end over five times), it's more a game that requires grinding to keep up rather than a massively difficult and unforgiving game by itself. That doesn't make it difficult, it makes it tedious. The only thing that can be hard is when luck-based card gameplay decides to screw you and your opponent draws the one card in their deck that will destroy your current setup.
I can't deny that I have gained a lot of frustration from playing reshef, it's nowhere near as easy as its predecessor, sacred cards, but unfortunately the standard of the franchise is built such that grinding is the name of the game if you can't currently overcome the challenge in front of you. Reshef of destruction and Forbidden memories were two absolute testaments to this (not to mention all the World Championship Series games). Probably the only game where you might have had to grind a little bit but not absolutely massively to win, was either The Sacred Cards, or Duelist of the Roses.
+Zsaver3 I see what you mean, the Yu-Gi-Oh games tend to have opponents where not only is their deck perfectly suited to them and hard to work against, but they can occasionally have moments where they pro play the shit out of you, or even worse, they draw the perfect hand and destroy any hopes you had of winning on turn one. I remember so many times where that happened and I was like "wow. Screw you too game."
+TerravancerYoh Actually, your anger can be justified. If you get far enough you begin to encounter opponents who have their decks stuffed to the gills with powerful cards. Cards that you can normally have 1 copy of in your deck in that game. Harpie's Feather Duster? Raigeki? Pot of Greed? Change of Heart? Swords of Revealing Light? Expect to see your opponent run 3 copies of them, gleefully shitting on the effort you took to get this far. Oh, yeah, and the starting Life Point skew along with the fact that your own Life Points are conserved unless you run home and save. Gets pretty brutal when the game throws several of those at you in a row. At least your reprieve there is the lousy AI that can be easily tricked.
excluding the ones with higher difficulty settings that make them the hardest, here are a few of the hardest i've played. 1. resonance of fate (if this game had a difficulty setting, it would be labeled as "WTF") 2. ninja gaiden 2 (has higher difficulty but even the normal mode can be rough. what made it hard for me was unfair checkpoints and item distribution.) 3. the agarest series (every one was pretty difficult. hard to name just 1) 4. Dragon age 2 (i actually played this one on the hard difficulty. however it was the knock back mechanic that was broken to the point where it didn't matter. if you got cornered, you were going to die.) 5. Metroid prime 2 (no one should have to backtrack the entire game to find small invisible aliens that don't appear on your map) 6. Etrian series (it's a 1st person strategy dungeon game... they can be very punishing for making mistakes and knowing the layout is as important as knowing your battle tactics.) 7. Fishing Master (this is a light hearted fishing game on the wii. for the most part it wasn't too bad but later in-game it was FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!! i enjoyed this game a lot for some reason although i'm not normally into these kinds of games) 8. The world ends with you (a pretty difficult ds game and was probably one of the best on the system. great soundtrack and gameplay. things were manageable for a while but later game new enemies and bosses were very hard.) 9. Knights in the Nightmare (this game is so hard that it was made so you won't lose progress in battles or boss fights when you die. it features permadeath similar to the fire emblem series although it has limited movement. it plays like a bullet hell and a tactics game at the same time. i think the match resets if you are unable to kill the enemy within the time limit. this game would be unbeatable if you lost progress every time you died.) 10. ice age/carnivorous hunt (i was a lot younger when i played this old ass pc game so maybe it seemed harder than it really was. however, the bosses of these games were truly something else. firing a bullet into the eye of a t-rex is very hard and was the only way to kill it. it could smell you a kilometer away and shooting him there while he's chasing you is impossible since his eyes on the side of his face. you also can't outrun him once he comes after you. the boss of ice age was even worse since i was never able to kill that one

Since I never took the time to try out Battletoads myself, nor have I watched any Let's Plays or full playthroughs of it, it's probably the first time I've ever heard about the levels beyond Turbo Tunnel. Also, "Who was it who was continuously shitting in their lunch in the early 1990s?" should totally be asked during the next Playtonic Games Q&A session.
Personally Id've swapped Mega Man 9 for Mega Man & Bass. Anyone who's played that game is probably traumatised by the nightmare that is King's Fortress Stage 2.

The one where you have to keep hopping on the sinking platform to reveal his weakness, and if you beat him but are still on the platform the controls lock and it automatically kills you. Dark Souls isn't hard though. Seriously, just back peddle when your stamina gets low and put your damn shield down when they're not swinging. Oh, and one last thing. Just don't fucking fat roll, fast roll if you can.

But when you play it for the first time, without ever playing anything like or looking at 'guides', the game can and will stomp on you. Speaking of Lost Levels and Super Mario Maker, I did actually recreate level C-4 because it's the one that I have the least fond memories of. Suffice to say, nobody got past the halfway point. I also made the level autoscroll and gave it stupidly precise jump timings, just to further hammer the difficulty home.
Am I the only one who hates seeing I Wanna Be The Guy (and its spinoffs) called a game? Not because of its ball-busting difficulty, but it's because I think it's just an overglorified fangame.
+rabbidluigi here is a hint on the last race of story mode: the ghost's 2nd and 3rd lap are a copy of your 1st and 2nd and that respective order, it works on any difficulty, thrust me it took soul crushing ours to figure this out

I had enough trouble with the first Ninja Gaiden reboot, which I got into a few years ago, then saw Ninja Gaiden Black. I proceeded to pick it up, doing the first few battles of the game with relative ease. I then proceeded to go through six controllers on that game. Not from rage, from the buttons and sticks coming off due to me playing that so much in an effort to fully beat the game.

I've heard it gets really difficult at some point but with no personal experience of it, I wasn't confident enough to put it here. Used its music for the intro and transitions though as a compromise.
I'm surprised that Jak II wasn't on this list. It's not as difficult on your second playthrough, but there are a few select levels that still make me rage. It's definitely the most difficult game I have ever played. Seriously, I had to technically cheat to get past that bullshit slums mission by groundpounding the water, destroying the autocannon, and merely hover-boarding across the water and thereby avoiding the Krimson Guards. Donkey Kong Country 2 is also an insanely difficult game. I've noticed that the second entry in a franchise is always the most difficult.

Super Mario Bros, the Lost Levels, was exactly what it says on the box. It was content cut from the first game because it didn't fit, or was considered too tricky, that was then cleaned up and repackaged as a sequel in Japan after they reskinned the ACTUAL sequel and started working on on the third entry, realizing they didn't have a number 2 in Japan. Please don't continue perpetuating this myth.
Out of all the souls games, the Scholar of the First Sin's DLCs gave me the hardest time along with Shrine of Amana in the main game. The bosses were easy (except for DLC) but the platforming and enemy placements could be very frustrating.

I still enjoy battletoads. I don't know why. I remember a kid in the playground saying "Oh you think you're good at video games because you beat mario 3 in a few days? I got a game I bet you could never beat!" Yeah well 3 years later I did! And then they didn't believe me anyway. godamnit.
I found Electronic Super Joy to be harder than Super Hexagon. Also, you put footage of Ikaruga in the video, but it didn't end up on the list even though more than half of the games listed aren't as hard as Ikaruga. Otherwise, nice job on this list; keep it up!
You forgot to mention that one of the vehicle levels in BattleToads (the one with the orb chasing you) was glitched. Player 2's vehicle can't be used at all, so the only way to beat the game is single player.

And the best thing about Battletoads? Due to a programming error, the 2 player co-op mode inexplicably cuts off after Level 11. Meaning that you have play the remaining 4 levels, which were already hard enough playing with TWO people, completely solo.
I know it's not actually *that* hard, but Geometry Dash was, at times, my personal *demon.* Some of the tracks the game has invoke a sense of love and nostalgia because it reminds me of the endless cheering for my bro we did when he beat Jumper. The game's music is kick-fucking-ass and when you get in the flow only to die on a cheese spike and get flapped back to the start you don't feel like existing anymore and/or your phone is in imminent danger!

I've not played Strange Journey, since it's not available in Europe.
And besides, most of the SMT catalogue that is available around the world is also available digitally, be it Persona, Nocturne, or Digital Devil Saga.
But since I've not played SJ, I'm sticking to my guns with Nocturne.
You know for me there is a certaint point where i feel that a game is hard but fair or just plain old bullshit.
For example games like Dark Souls, Meatboy or Hotline Miami are hard but fair because everytime i die it feels more like my own fault and by avoiding my mistake i can actually move on (although i probably will never be as good as some people are in Meatboy i just leave it at beating the game with a keyboard and your feet). This way the game encourages me to try again and get better as i move along. It also helps that a lot of hard but fair games don't really penalize you for dieing to often or if they do it mostly is just a minor inconvinience (like loosing all your souls in DS is pretty minor).
And then you got the bullshitfest that are games like IWBTG, Lost Levels or Battletoads where even if you really put all manners of skill into it you still will fail over and over again and by the end it really is nothing but trial on error until you somehow beat a stage and can move on. That's not good designe that's just extending gametime by making it as hard as possible for the player to get through. And the biggest part for me is that games like these are just not fun when i have to see the game over screen 100+ times just to finally see the end credits and be done with the game.
Takeshi's Challenge. The whole game is basically that guy from Takeshi's Challenge/MXC trolling you the entire game. It's ridiculous, unintuitive, utterly unfair in ways Battletoards and IWBTG could only DREAM of being, includes solutions to puzzles that you would never in a million years figure out on your own and the game sure as hell isn't going to tell you, and anyone masochistic enough to play it all the way through to the end gets to watch the game basically make fun of you for wasting your time playing it.
That game isn't so much 'hard' as it is just a complete guessing game to figure out what to do. Once you know what to do, it's still not easy, but not nearly as hard as the games on this list.

I agree with your number one choice. Other hard games made add a new gimmick or two each level but Battletoads switches how you need to play the game with each level, adding not only new obstacles but also new controls and new ways of navigating the levels. Getting good at Battletoads requires you to pretty much master 8 different games. And considering you have very limited lives and even more limited continues you will have very little time to practice a level before you have to complete it. And add to that all of the troll moves that will cost you a life if you don't know about it and a co-op that is only there to hinder the players and you have a game that seems to hate you on a very personal level.

With Battletoads, I always farmed lives hitting the crows in level 2 over and over. That's how I was able to last near the end of the game. I was so close to beating it!
...No... I don't care... Battletoads is cake compared to I Wanna Be The Guy, or I Wanna Be The Boshy... Both just ask for skills that you HAVE to practice for days to finish... Battletoads actually starts fairly easy instead of "Oh look, random apples... That fall down, and murder me... Great...".

You forgot the Order of Ecclesia. Recovery spots are sparse, you deal little damage, levelling up barely helps you, some bosses can be relentless, and every time you die early in the game, you must suffer one of the most terrifying visions of defeat. I remember dying and getting scared to the point of turning off the game & not picking it up for another hour.

To make things worse, she is the boss of chapter 9! It is a massive difficultity spike! Oh also, she has a final form you have to fight before the final 3 chapters, which should be burned alive then stabbed 6666 times then be forced to complete battletoads, then finally die in the same way as Komani!!! All the things that annoy me in her first form are 9001 times worse! Well, at least they place a checkpoint right before this fight.

+TerravancerYoh That wasn't hard, but it's more a game that requires a lot of grinding to beat, at least up until Paradox. After that, if you get the phoenix ra form, you pretty much have a 12.5% chance on the opening hand of winning the duel instantly (discard phoenix ra to summon battle mode ra) and the odds only increase from there. The only massive difficulty is building a deck that can let you survive until then. At least from my perspective (since I've played Reshef through to the end over five times), it's more a game that requires grinding to keep up rather than a massively difficult and unforgiving game by itself. That doesn't make it difficult, it makes it tedious. The only thing that can be hard is when luck-based card gameplay decides to screw you and your opponent draws the one card in their deck that will destroy your current setup.

I can't deny that I have gained a lot of frustration from playing reshef, it's nowhere near as easy as its predecessor, sacred cards, but unfortunately the standard of the franchise is built such that grinding is the name of the game if you can't currently overcome the challenge in front of you. Reshef of destruction and Forbidden memories were two absolute testaments to this (not to mention all the World Championship Series games). Probably the only game where you might have had to grind a little bit but not absolutely massively to win, was either The Sacred Cards, or Duelist of the Roses.
+Zsaver3 I see what you mean, the Yu-Gi-Oh games tend to have opponents where not only is their deck perfectly suited to them and hard to work against, but they can occasionally have moments where they pro play the shit out of you, or even worse, they draw the perfect hand and destroy any hopes you had of winning on turn one. I remember so many times where that happened and I was like "wow. Screw you too game."
+TerravancerYoh Actually, your anger can be justified. If you get far enough you begin to encounter opponents who have their decks stuffed to the gills with powerful cards. Cards that you can normally have 1 copy of in your deck in that game. Harpie's Feather Duster? Raigeki? Pot of Greed? Change of Heart? Swords of Revealing Light? Expect to see your opponent run 3 copies of them, gleefully shitting on the effort you took to get this far.
Oh, yeah, and the starting Life Point skew along with the fact that your own Life Points are conserved unless you run home and save. Gets pretty brutal when the game throws several of those at you in a row.
At least your reprieve there is the lousy AI that can be easily tricked.
excluding the ones with higher difficulty settings that make them the hardest, here are a few of the hardest i've played.
1. resonance of fate (if this game had a difficulty setting, it would be labeled as "WTF")
2. ninja gaiden 2 (has higher difficulty but even the normal mode can be rough. what made it hard for me was unfair checkpoints and item distribution.)
3. the agarest series (every one was pretty difficult. hard to name just 1)
4. Dragon age 2 (i actually played this one on the hard difficulty. however it was the knock back mechanic that was broken to the point where it didn't matter. if you got cornered, you were going to die.)
5. Metroid prime 2 (no one should have to backtrack the entire game to find small invisible aliens that don't appear on your map)
6. Etrian series (it's a 1st person strategy dungeon game... they can be very punishing for making mistakes and knowing the layout is as important as knowing your battle tactics.)
7. Fishing Master (this is a light hearted fishing game on the wii. for the most part it wasn't too bad but later in-game it was FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!! i enjoyed this game a lot for some reason although i'm not normally into these kinds of games)
8. The world ends with you (a pretty difficult ds game and was probably one of the best on the system. great soundtrack and gameplay. things were manageable for a while but later game new enemies and bosses were very hard.)
9. Knights in the Nightmare (this game is so hard that it was made so you won't lose progress in battles or boss fights when you die. it features permadeath similar to the fire emblem series although it has limited movement. it plays like a bullet hell and a tactics game at the same time. i think the match resets if you are unable to kill the enemy within the time limit. this game would be unbeatable if you lost progress every time you died.)
10. ice age/carnivorous hunt (i was a lot younger when i played this old ass pc game so maybe it seemed harder than it really was. however, the bosses of these games were truly something else. firing a bullet into the eye of a t-rex is very hard and was the only way to kill it. it could smell you a kilometer away and shooting him there while he's chasing you is impossible since his eyes on the side of his face. you also can't outrun him once he comes after you. the boss of ice age was even worse since i was never able to kill that one

Suffice to say, nobody got past the halfway point. I also made the level autoscroll and gave it stupidly precise jump timings, just to further hammer the difficulty home.

I had enough trouble with the first Ninja Gaiden reboot, which I got into a few years ago, then saw Ninja Gaiden Black. I proceeded to pick it up, doing the first few battles of the game with relative ease. I then proceeded to go through six controllers on that game. Not from rage, from the buttons and sticks coming off due to me playing that so much in an effort to fully beat the game.
I find Dark Souls' difficulty is overrated. It's quite easy is you observant and patient.

I'm surprised that Jak II wasn't on this list. It's not as difficult on your second playthrough, but there are a few select levels that still make me rage. It's definitely the most difficult game I have ever played. Seriously, I had to technically cheat to get past that bullshit slums mission by groundpounding the water, destroying the autocannon, and merely hover-boarding across the water and thereby avoiding the Krimson Guards.
Donkey Kong Country 2 is also an insanely difficult game. I've noticed that the second entry in a franchise is always the most difficult.

Super Mario Bros, the Lost Levels, was exactly what it says on the box. It was content cut from the first game because it didn't fit, or was considered too tricky, that was then cleaned up and repackaged as a sequel in Japan after they reskinned the ACTUAL sequel and started working on on the third entry, realizing they didn't have a number 2 in Japan.

Out of all the souls games, the Scholar of the First Sin's DLCs gave me the hardest time along with Shrine of Amana in the main game. The bosses were easy (except for DLC) but the platforming and enemy placements could be very frustrating.

I found Electronic Super Joy to be harder than Super Hexagon. Also, you put footage of Ikaruga in the video, but it didn't end up on the list even though more than half of the games listed aren't as hard as Ikaruga. Otherwise, nice job on this list; keep it up!
You forgot to mention that one of the vehicle levels in BattleToads (the one with the orb chasing you) was glitched. Player 2's vehicle can't be used at all, so the only way to beat the game is single player.

I know it's not actually *that* hard, but Geometry Dash was, at times, my personal *demon.* Some of the tracks the game has invoke a sense of love and nostalgia because it reminds me of the endless cheering for my bro we did when he beat Jumper. The game's music is kick-fucking-ass and when you get in the flow only to die on a cheese spike and get flapped back to the start you don't feel like existing anymore and/or your phone is in imminent danger!

Here's what's good about Super Meat Boy. Yes: It is brutally difficult, but it never makes the player feel like a moron when they loose. That makes the challenge respectable.
