    For me the worst is the first fight in Tales of Symphonia vs Vidarr. I always start the game on mania difficulty at first to gain the Berserker title before reaching the first dungeon and as such usually have my entire party massively over leveled. So it is always insulting that after decimating the ball and chain wielding brute in less then 30 seconds to have it jump to a cutscene of my party collapsing out of breath with a tremulous "Man, this guy is really tough!" and being rescued by Kratos.

    I don't know if the Mother Brain fight actually counts. She won't start using the Hyper Beam on you until you deal a crapton of damage to her; if you just sit there and get wailed on expecting it to happen, you'll just get slagged and have to do it all over again. It's more akin to the fight against the Lich King in World of Warcraft: You drop the final boss down to about 10% HP, a cutscene ensues where it looks like you're completely hosed, help arrives via Deus ex Machina, and you get to finish them off in a glorious display of asskickery.
    Definitely no argument on how well the fight was presented, just not sure it meets the criteria for this countdown.

    • @Winasaurus
      @Winasaurus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's a real boss fight, the Hyper Beam/Metroid giving you rainbow lasers is a cutscene between phases. If it was a truly impossible one like Jetsream Sam or Vile or Metal Face, you could do nothing and lose and keep playing because the point is to lose. It's not a fight you can't win, cause losing is not doing enough damage and restarting, triggering Hyper Beam is winning.
      For the other 4 on this list you can just do nothing to 'win' cause that's how you continue. Can't do that with Metroid.

    I think something like Top 5 Unbeatable Scenarios/Endings might be worth a list. Not necessarily boss fights, but helpless struggles the game pits you against.
    Examples being the endless enemy gauntlet at the end of Halo Reach, the attempt to resist at the ending of Shadow of the Colossus, and Zack's last battle against Shinra in FFVII: Crisis Core.

    Top 5 non boss battles.
    Now this one may take some explanation. You know the standard formula for a boss, you reach the end of the area, find a place to restock health and ammo, many even save the game if the developers are feeling generous. Then you move forward, but instead of a boss, you end up fighting a horde of enemies much larger than any fight previous. Done poorly it's just a grind. Done well it can be the best fight in the game.

    The Water Wraith from Pikmin 2 is another good example. You spend four cave floors rushing to get the treasures before the untouchable monster appears and literally hunts down your captains, instantly killing any Pikmin in the way in the process. That is until the final floor where you get Purples to satisfyingly whoop the Wraith's ass.

    The most memorable un-win-able fight is as Ryu vs. Baileo and Sunder in breath of fire 3. This fight is cool because after that you spend a good chunk of the game running from and generally being antagonized by the brothers before an epic boss fight against them at the same time that Gaar, another un-beatable boss, joins your party.

  • @sparrowthesissy2186

    I gotta comment right away that I totally agree with you about cutscenes that force you to lose being much worse than boss fights you actually get to play, but just can't win. And if those unwinnable boss fights preserve your healing items so you don't accidentally waste them, then that is the best version of this trope generally. Okay, I'll actually watch the video now, but great point right off the bat.

  • @Nu_Rhythm

    For anyone who has played the first Zone of The Enders, I definitely think we can agree Anubis deserves a mention.
    You spend the entire game as Leo powering up Jehuty from a rookie pilot and base orbitial frame to an unstoppable force against the colony invasion. The game does an excellent job at making you feel stronger after each major fight, only for Anubis to show up at the end and make a fool out of you. The game let's you try and fight him, even after ADA outright declares it an unwinnable fight not yet destined to happen. That fight has always been memorable to me and I'm glad we got a resolution with Anubis (albeit not with Leo) in the second game.

    • @Skeleton-chan
      @Skeleton-chan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What makes this even better is the pay off in 2. You might, at best, land a couple hits on Anubis in the beginning but there's a massive gulf between the power of Jehuty and Anubis, and Dingo's (read: YOUR) skill as a runner can't make up the difference.
      Then you beat Inhert and get Zero Shift yourself, and that corridor of combat against jobber enemies that are barely even a blip to you now puts into perspective just how powerful Anubis was compared to you before. YOU are now on the level of Anubis, and it feels so goddamn satisfying when you finally get to the space battle against him and get to have your proper rival battle on (mostly) even terms..

    I remember when i first went up against Anubis in Zone of the Enders 1. The fact i couldn't defeat him, and avoid his attacks until I could escape, made him a seriously dangerous boss. When i had to fight Anubis again in the sequel, i was still outmatched because of his Zero-Shift ability. When i finally obtained the Zero-Shift power for myself, i no longer felt a sense of dread when i fought him again. I could finally beat him on equal footing, by using his own ticks against him. When i defeated him, it felt satisfying to see a once overpowered boss finally fall at my feet.

    One of my favorite games in this regard in recent memory was actually a set of two connected games. Falcom's Legend of Heroes series has a very enthralling story, and while it has its cliches and shortcomings, I found the forced loss boss fights of Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 interesting. Specifically the boss fights that force you to lose, but give you a reason to still do well by hanging a carrot out there for you in the form of completion challenges. In the games you collect points for completing tasks and bonus points for doing these tasks in a certain way or finding a hidden detail, or just plain paying attention and answering a question correctly. But some of the more challenging ones come in Trails of Cold Steel 2, where you have several boss fights you cannot win, but if you fulfill certain conditions you get points. These tasks include getting the boss below a certain % of HP, defeating one of the characters in the fight, surviving until the fight automatically ends... Stuff like that. It makes it more worthwhile to ACTUALLY FIGHT IT OUT!!! Its a hopeless fight, but you don't just want to give up cause it will mean you just gave up on getting those points and getting 100%.
    Granted, I think your choices are better still, but its worth mentioning that sort of thing. Where you get something for trying to win even though you really can't.

    My favorite helpless boss fight has to be the very first one in Bravely Second. It's very telling when the game opens with some of the strongest characters from Bravely Default fighting against Kaiser Oblivion and they can't even scratch him. Really makes it all the more awesome with how you have to progress to chapter 5 of Bravely Second.

    The villain of Thousand Year Door is technically not shown until the end, but looking at all the torture devices and Dull Bones in Hooktail's Castle as well as talking to NPCs to uncover lore show how nasty she is and establish why it's so important that you're fighting the X-Nauts for the Crystal Stars.

  • @SuperLlama42

    I thought the first Yggdrasil fight in Symphonia was a good example. It alleviates the whole "wasting all your healing items on a fight you can't win" thing by having him show up at the end of two consecutive boss fights; one standard one and one super-tough boss you TECHNICALLY can beat but don't have to (but you get some nifty rewards if you do,) so at that point you've probably already burned through all your healing items. And if you don't die immediately the fight automatically ends after a set amount of time when Yggdrasil gets tired of your shit and just pulls a TPK with the Eternal Sword (which admittedly probably would've worked better if it was reworked into a Hi-Ougi/Mystic Arte when those were introduced into the series.)

  • @TheBanishedWind

    Of interest, Super Metroid Mother Brain does have a health bar, just that once it's half down, the script kicks in and that's when Samus gets dunked on, the Baby saves her, and the second half of Mother Brain's health bar kicks in to mark how dunked on she currently is.

    I would've put Shadow Rise from Persona 4 on this list. For a while, you think it's an ordinary boss fight until she actually SCANS you and makes all of your attacks, physical and magical, completely ineffective. The one exception you have is to reflect her attacks back at her, but here's the thing--they'll never be strong enough to actually beat her.

  • @DakanaGarretson

    There's a similar thing in dragonball Z budokai tenkaichi 2. Your characters gain exp and levels in the story mode, and so face certain fights that they lost in the anime, piccolo losing to Radditz at the start for example. However, when your characters are stronger you can come back and actually stand a chance, and if you DO win, you'll unlock a special story mode for each fight that carries on the story but where your character wins. It's quite clever

    Final Fantasy V - the boss battle against Exdeath as Galuf. This is a battle against a foe that you can't beat, and it shows the mechanics behind how you can revive your party with phoenix downs, and how it can't work. Probably the most personal villain in "Dragon Quest", a series which is great on plot and gameplay but the characters can be a LITTLE generic. Ladja however sets himself up so well, and he also delivers the plot upheavals that split the game into three different parts. Finally defeating the repugnant bastard becomes BEYOND satisfying when you finally get the chance to murder his loathsome ass.

    A favourite Impossible Boss Fight of mine is Reaper Beat in The World Ends With You. Technically it's not a completely "Impossible" fight, as there is an achievement for defeating him, but while you play the main story, he's practically invincible. Getting the achievement means replaying the 'story' multiple times on the higher difficulty levels and exploring everything to get all the powerups and master all the pins you need, and even then it's a real pain, just like most other achievement fights. It would get boring if the game wasn't as good as it is.

    I feel Jetstream Sam in Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is also a pretty good one of these unbeatable bosses. You just finished demolishing a massive Metal Gear RAY, then Sam challenges you kicks your butt, cuts your eye, and cuts off your arm and leaves before the final blow is struck.

    The funny thing about the xenoblade entry is that you get a clever hint added in early in the story. How clever? Well, The writers are a buncha jokers! The monado phases through fiona and leaves her unharmed, so if it was able to hurt the mechon, why not metal face? That question had an answer out right from early on!

      No, Sticker Star was that bad. Its story was bland, especially compared to previous Mario RPG stories, most of the characters were one dimensional, and the battles, which are one of the biggest draws of an RPG, are pointless because all you get for beating them are stickers, which you spent the entire battle getting rid of to kill the enemies, and coins, which are only to get stickers.

    I find myself thinking of the first boss battle in Golden Sun, where Saturos and Minardi pretty much own you after activating mount Aleph and fleeing for their lives; realising how badly they'd effed up. There's also the battle with Bishop Ladja in Dragon Quest V Hand of the Heavenly Bride, where he kicks your arse because, well; you're eight years old, and you have to be rescued by daddy Pankrez who kicks royal arse when he sees the player in trouble. I guess they're kind of backwater games compared to these major franchises though, so I'm not surprised that they don't get a mention. Still some of my favourite games though.

      I was thinking more along the lines of Telethia the Endbringer (Xenoblade X) due to it appearing in Chapter 6, L's final affinity mission, and during a normal mission. Combined with its description in the Enemy Index and references to Xenoblade Chronicles. In comparison, Avalanche Abaasy appears after Mechonis Core without much explanation for how it got there.
      Unlike Avalanche Abaasy, you don't have to force the weather to cooperate with you when fighting Telethia the Endbringer, but the mood is still set because of the location the superboss can be found in. In other words, trying to reach Telethia the Endbringer is a lot less tedious than trying to summon Avalanche Abaasy. And if you lose, which you probably will since we're talking about superbosses, you're going to have to repeat the process.
      While Avalanche Abaasy is 21 levels above you and 1.21 times as powerful as you, Telethia the Enbringer is 39 levels above you and 1.65 times as powerful as you. Keeping in mind for Avalanche Abaasy, you have to equip divine protect and night vision gems to even stand a chance while Telethia the Endbringer gives you a bit more freedom of how to fight it. I'd rather have a superboss that gives me options of approach.
      Those are just my opinions though. I'm just saying that Telethia the Endbringer has more going for it than difficulty.

      Well, they're REALLY good ones, lemme tell you. Do you take your pick of the secret confrontation with Sephiroth, the original JRPG villain that has his power cranked up to 11 here? Or perhaps against all 13 of the villainous Organization you've been facing over the entire game, all souped up, back-to-back. Or hell, then there's Lingering Will, a living suit of armor that gives you a grand test on whether or not you're ready to face the villain that defeated the person who once inhabited the suit. The list goes on, and they're all great!

    Top 5 sexy villains/anti-heroes sound like a pretty good idea, that or the 5 sexy memes from video games. Either way, your videos are great Will, and oddly enough I've rarely seen very people/countdown artists effectively use a combination of the premise, essay, articulation, and humor so damn well in a video style like this. I would note someone like Fawful, QG, and Alex (Autarch of Flame) but you sir have a lot more charm and charisma in comparison (not saying they are crap or to hate on them I just have a bias thought that the sound of Englishmen articulate things is more pleasant). Well, that and I get the feeling that you're one of the more genuine sounding people I've watched over the passing years. I would compare you to James Rolfe and his reviews on film. Keep up the great work, it helps keep my sanity in college in-tact for not being able to constantly talk with friends online or in person.

    Top Five Worst/Best Forced Deaths.
    e.g. when a previously playable character is killed off in a cutscene where you can't save them. Examples being Fiora (for best as it establishes the threat of the Mechon and gives Shulk a motive) or Kaze - FE:Fates Birthright - for worst as it messes with the established rules of Fire Emblem.

    • @Kwatcher100
      @Kwatcher100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dimensional Raven Not sure Kaze would really make the cut since it's possible to save him if you have an A rank support with him.

    • @sadisticcheese
      @sadisticcheese 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but it's such an arbitrary requirement. It sets a precedent that your allies can die in scripted situations even when you can be a top player. Making this more annoying is the fact that Kaze can support with every female in the game as well as Silas and Saizo. This means that there is a high likelihood that he wouldn't have got A support with Corrin by this point due to his many support options. If you're wondering why I didn't put Scarlet's death from Revelations in my previous post, it's because she's one of those characters that only supports Corrin and doesn't bear any children, making her relevance/attachment much less than Kaze. True, Intelligent Systemskind of fucked up given how Male Corrin can marry her and then she still dies, but her death was pretty obvious when she opened up about the flowers of Cheve. And I say pretty obvious purely because of the precedent that Kaze's death set for characters dying in scripted scenarios.

  • @ShadwSonic
    @ShadwSonic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, #1 is clever... especially since it technically has four phases:
    Phase 1: The nostalgic Final Boss. The exact same as the last time you fought.
    Phase 2: The actual Final Boss. Here's the majority of the difficulty.
    Phase 3: The impossible fight. The moment that laser starts charging, you know you're here.
    Phase 4: Gratuitous curbstomping. By this point the fight is barely harder than your basic enemy, and it feels SO good!
    What makes this work is that the shift between Phases 2 and 3 is practically invisible, so you're still in "seriously fighting" mode when you reach it.

    Don't know if it counts but Etna and Laharel from Disgaea 2. When you find them they are level 1000 and 1200 respectively and the game can usually be beaten with your best character level in the 80s. With enough new game pluses and grinding they're beatable. By beating them you even get special endings.

    I'm so glad you didn't include Tiga (Breath of Fire 2) and Ramirez's second fight (Skies of Arcadia). The first one is a pointless battle that seems like it should be beatable, but it isn't and its sole purpose seems to be to emasculate you. The second one could theoretically go on forever if your crew is properly leveled; really, the only reason it didn't in my case was because I was getting bored.

    now the inverse: The top ___ winable hopeless battles. An opponent appears to fight you and, suprise! You get your rear handed to you. You reload the save thinking "im up for a challenge". 3 hours later you finally win the battle and get a reward. Note: these scenarios are meant to be force loss battles, winning just gives you an advantage for later game. Winning propts a quick cutscene or ultimate attack for your canon defeat, but you got the chance to grab a powerful item/equipment/armor that wouldnt have been obtained if you lost.
