Freelander TD4 - M47 crankcase filter upgrade - prevents smoke

- The BMW M47 engine as used in the Freelander 1 TD4, BMW 1 and 3 series, has one weakness (amongst many). The crankcase filter is not a recommended service item and so is very often ignored. However as time and miles go up the filter clogs and the engine pressurises and starts forcing oil into places you don’t want it, like through the turbo charger and into the inlet, creating an oiled up engine and exhaust smoke.
There is an upgraded part, that then never needs changing. This is the video to show how to change yours.

So I have a question about this part replacement. When this new separator is in place, does that mean the is no longer a need to place a filter in there? Does this device spin by airflow and then recirculate the oil back to the engine? I'm just curious before I attempt this replacement.

Not having looked yet, but from what I've just read, this oil unit is on the MG Zt-T 2.0l as it has the M34R engine and the intercooler has oil in it, so it's either this is blocked or turbo leaking oil! ...I have to say, I'm somewhat surprised at its performance for a 2.0l engine, it has no power at all! ...is this a common factor with them? ...a great video once again, everything in fine detail 👏👏👏👏
It doesn’t surprise me that it has the same filter problem. I’m not a fan of those BMW engines, too many faults over time and yes big much power. Worth checking your boost pressure is ok though and those ronbox tuning boxes make a fair improvement.
Replace all your small bore rubber vacuum hoses throughout with silicone ones. You just buy a couple of meters from any tubing supplier. I bought red as I could then identify it. The difference is incredible to anything that runs off using it. I nearly put my head through the windscreen as the brake servo was working better than new. Turbo is also now functioning properly. It is like a new car.

Hi me again. But do you know why when I have put car into gear then l release the clutch pedal it is doubles up passing higher than break pedal any thoughts on the problem freelander 2002. Thanks again. Mike
Hmm, not sure I quite understand but it's not unusual to have the clutch higher than the brake pedal. If too high maybe have a look underneath on the pedal box and see if you can work out what is going on.
My freelander is smoking blue could that be from the crankcase breather being clogged ??
It could be and is well worth changing. The oil will be covering the intercooler and intake insides so worth a clean after you have changed it. Also see my other videos on cleaning the intercooler and fixing a smokey freelander td4 on my channel. Lots of videos in a freelander playlist.

Is it normal for the oil filler cap to dance a little when the engine is idling?
No if it is done up, yes if it is justing there looose.

@@amana1480 Take it all apart (not too difficult) and the necessary seals come with the new filter.

Where does the little filter go that was in the box
There was only the crankcase filter and seals that were in my box. The small filter shown to the side of the box in the video is a generic fuel filter used as an air filter for the pipe that goes to the turbo boost solenoid, with one side open to the air.

I have some oil leaking around EGR Vent is it possible it is comming from crankcase regular filter and should I install EGR bypass will that be better for engine or it will just give it power boost and shorten life of engine

The old style filter blocks and oil gets pushed into the inlet manifold. It gets everwhere so could perhaps be seen around the egr. Definitely worth upgrading it. Have EGR means better no2 emissions so better you everyones health. If the egr is working ok, I would leave it along. Mine was only blanked as the car came like that.

It's funny they sound England becous land rover over there parts are lot cheaper and you don't have to wait that long.
Great parts availability on ebay and lots of independant suppliers like Britparts and paddockspares and rimmerbros. Many will ship abroad.

@@comeinhandynow it is, i own a rover 75 when BMW bought rover they made this diesel engine for it its a nice realiable little engine to be honest, well maintain it will pull anything you want :)
