Hello, I think that Vectorworks is not a low level BIM, considering that is part of the Nemetschek group, the most important autodesk competitor in the BIM world. whit more than twenty years of developing history and 500.000 users all over the world VW has developed a very important role in the BIM industry. One good example could be Itten+brechbülhl AG, a Swiss firm with more than 100 years history awarded for their BIM innovations that are VW users.
I use Chief Architect... They are not "trying", they ARE doing BIM and does a fantastic job. I love CA because it's quick and easy and don't have to draw every single wall and so forth like AutoCad. Issue it, I switched to a mac and I would have to again buy a license so looking for something else to see what's out there.
Thanks a lot for your tutorials !!!! I have watched and rewatched all of them as I'm learning Revit at the moment, your time and effort is well appreciated
I think you totally missed the power of a current BricsCAD and their BricsCAD BIM module, you did mentioned that your reference was your father's old version but I would encourage you to test the latest versions, blazing fast and you have all the functions of AutoCAD+a complete substitute for SketchUp+many functions you would only find in Inventor+ most of what you can do with Revit in a single package that works in Windows, Mac and Linux. I started using AutoCAD back in version 2.5 all the way to Architectural Desktop 2008, however, I did change to BricsCAD back in 2005 and the last AutoCAD I actually installed was Architectural Desktop 2006, never got around to install 2008, still in its mint condition in the box. I have been working in BricsCAD BIM for the past year, the jump from DWG CAD similar to AutoCAD to BIM using BricsCAD BIM was fast and intuitive, my first BIM project was a Security Control post about 18 m2 for an industrial project, we mastered the process within a week and our second project was a 110,000 m2 Shopping Center architectural and structural models (we do not do in-house MEP but our SUBs are using also BricsCAD BIM with an application for MEP and very happy with it, one of our subs is using CADWorx from Hexagon for plant design running on BricsCAD that is awesome and Civil Site Design substituting Civil 3D you will never want to go back) We also found a great integration with structural products like ETABS. Models created by Revit seem to have a lower precision than those created with BricsCAD BIM, in a project we got from an architectural firm some 300 meters wide the Revit Model had a 2 degree error when imported to ETABS, we had to rebuild the model from scratch, eventually we tested doing it with BricsCAD BIM which created the IFC with perfect precision for ETABS I guess that if you come from Autocad to BIM you will find BricsCAD a far easier product to use as many of the commands behave the same in the DWG CAD environment when building your BIM model and the solid engine behaves like a Sketchup pumped with steroids creating solid elements that you can easily convert to all kind of BIM entities with a click of a button. If you are a native Revit user going to BricsCAD BIM you will probably have a harder time as you would have to learn your DWG CAD commands BricsCAD BIM also sports a wide array of commands not available in AutoCAD and Artificial Intelligence tools that make complex matters a breeze, Blockify to find all instances of any group of exploded blocks and convert them back to blocks, Parametrize to generate full 3D parametric components on a single command, propagate to replicate complex designs in all similar locations across your model, no need to create families before hand, just model in 3D and then do the bimification with the AI command BIMIFY, I keep viewing your videos and thouse of others trying to find a justification for Revit and I have never found a reason to change to Autodesk from BricsCAD
The best BIM software is Revit however if you're looking for an alternative to AutoCAD, vectorworks is far superior. The bonus with vectorworks is that it can do a little BIM. One can model almost anything in vectorworks where the same cannot be said about Revit. I would say vectorworks sits in between Revit and AutoCAD. Architects should not be using AutoCAD (or similar 2d product), absolutely not. Vectorworks should be the minimum as it can do what AutoCAD and SketchUp can do, combined with the added capability of presentation renderings and a little BIM. My 2 cents 😊
Yes, vectorworks is getting improved over the years, it even has it own render engine base in Maxon cinema 4d engine, and they added Marionette for parametric visual programming kinda like Dynamo for revit or Grasshopper for rhino.
The most used is not necessarily the best. In Europe I suspect Autodesk to use a very particular way to forced people to use these products. All the cracks are ready a few days before the official versions. So, students used it because it's very easy to have an unpaid version. When students are professionals, they paid a licence for it because it's the only program they used.

Sorry. That's not true. It started as 2D drafting tool called MiniCAD It was just 6 years it began to offer file sharing features. That's why they has lost their market to ArchiCAD and Revit in early 2000's. It was very recent VW became complete BIM software.
In my modest experience, AutoCAD is not the best at all. It's just the old tool that old architects and engineers use and force the new generation to learn it, so they can have access to their design studio. It's like a snake that bite its tale. Vectorworks is a much better software for 2d and 3d. It's ultra prized and cost, proportionally, much less than AutoCAD. Autodesk admits that AutoCAD is the past. No firm of value, in a anglo American, market would request AutoCAD as an obligation, unless you design interiors or landscape, where vectorworks is considered the #1 of the market. I respect you a lot but i don't understand your "obsession" with Autodesk products. There is much more out there. Thanks and have a nice day.
I kinda like the documentation / set-creating parts of Vectorworks, but 2D drafting with VW is somewhat a pain...actually I prefer Rhino for 2D drafting. It is even cheaper than ACAD, but shipped with a whole sophisticated 3D tool set. If RH has better documentation functions it would definitely kill ACAD IMO.
I agree, there are more professional CAD/BIM software products to consider these days than waaayyyy overpriced AUTODESK products. I've never understood why larger practices & some individuals don't explore the market to recognise this fact & thus end up being VANILLA-CAD users & out of pocket. For a considered list, see below:- List of alternative CAD/BIM products than Autodesk:- Cadline Network Ltd - ArchLine-Xp & LT (light) version Graphisoft - ArchiCAD Nemetschek - Allplan Architecture Gehry Technologies - Digital Project Designer Nemetschek - Vectorworks Architect Bentley - Architecture 4MSA IDEA - Architectural Design (IntelliCAD) CADSoft - Envisioneer DataCAD LLC - Software for AEC Professionals Softtech - Spirit Pro Robert McNeel & Associates - Rhino 3D + VisualARQ AutoDesSys - Form-Z Edificius SketchUp Pro Bricsys - BricsCAD / BricsCAD BIM FreeCAD Arch Xeometric -EliteCad Architecture Chief Architect CadLogic - Draft it Architectural NanoSoft - NanoCad Construction ProgeSoft - ProgeCAD Architecture Avanquest - TurboCAD Professional Elecosoft - Arcon Evo Visual Building Premium
VW is good option. That's true. However, I think they should overhaul their UI and workflow system. It's very old and too complicated. That's why they are declining slowly, but definitely and steadily.
I had been using IMSI Turbocad and returned back to using it but was unable to register it as they'd updated their registration to not include my version.
Cool video I might check some of those alternatives out. I actually use Revit Lt - way cheaper, obviously doesn't have all the tools of the full package but it's got everything I need for my projects.
Vectorworks was not BIM software 5-6 years ago. It was just mixing of sketchup and 2D CAD, then. That's true. I think, however, it's truly BIM software now. If VW change their UI, i would choose it.
Just my two cents. Revit though supreme in certain areas of documentation it lacks fluidity in modelling and is not as organic as one would expect for its price point. The library of families is very poor and is the library from the 2010 release or maybe older. No program is perfect but Vectorworks in some respects is on the same level as Revit or surpassed. In closing were it not for the Dynamo the modelling in Revit would be even more limited. So a decent program at best is what I think of as the level that Revit is on.
Hi, I like your "reviews". Could you make a Video going deeper in to BricsCAD BIM and BricsCAD Mechanical? Does your father use BricsCAD BIM in his company? As of today 2020.

Is there a reason you didn't mention Autocad and Revit LT? I use both because I can't afford the full versions. I know there are missing features, some significant, but I decided it was worth it. In fact, I worked with an interior design firm for over 5 years and they use Autocad LT almost exclusively.
The video info starts at 2:26

I agree. Balkan is wrong. He didn't ever use softwares he mentioned. But I think VW has to change their UI and basic workflow. It's too complicated...

Bricscad runs on Linux Operating systems too. Even Bricscad BIM.
Vectorworks is so cool I use it and I'd be more in the spotlight

Yes Emmanuel, however I think it's global and not only Europe
Vectorworks was one of the first to introduce BIM capabilities, long before others.

You totally missed the best AutoCAD alternative: DraftSight.
and its for free!
@@pnudabrewer soon, it's not.
Only the windows version won't be free

They are moving to a subscription service. Still cheaper than AutoCAD.
CAN U ADD UP THE LINK TO DOWNLOAD THE ALL THE TEMPLATES YOU USE
IT WOULD BE REALLY HELPFUL

Vectorworks is far from cheap! 4200 CAD for perpetual licence! Also I think it’s pretty close to what Revit is doing if not superior in flexibility...
I had been using IMSI Turbocad and returned back to using it but was unable to register it as they'd updated their registration to not include my version.

what about Zwcad ? I've been pretty impressed as it's muche faster than Autocad and lighter
