I wouldn't worry about a heater. If there are no drafts and it's dry your hens will be fine. You just have to figure out something for keeping the water from freezing. I have a light bulb in a cement block and put the waterer over that. Works good. Also cold tolerant chicken breeds help. Nice going!
Yes sir I have decided to not run a heater and instead will be building a small, insulated pen inside the coop for the chickens to come and go as they please. I have 20 isah browns which are a pretty hardy breed, but might add some wyandottes down the line. The hens should be able to keep the smaller pen warm, but will still be able to enjoy the rest of the coop! Very cold here though, -30C is pretty average and we will get snaps of -50C.
