God Damn The Sun off The Burning World is a great song. I feel like The Burning World is not their best album at all but it's not as awful as people make it out to be.
The Burning World is the only Swans album that's missing on Swans' bandcamp. It's also the only Swans album I own on vinyl. Full time bangers, I'm all for this mellow americana that, I'm pretty sure, directly inspired Those Poor Bastards and the like.

3 years late, but I have to commend you for your utter bravery. "Looking to diversify my music taste a little from hip-hop" and jumping into Swans is analogous to wanting to learn to swim and subsequently backflipping into the mouth of an active volcano. If you ever can, see them live. My ears are still ringing from a 2016 show in Buenos Aires, but the ritual sacrifice was well worth it. Also, the live albums should NOT be overlooked. "Swans Are Dead" has some unique live tracks that are among their best (Feel Happiness). Delicquesence also has the 45-minute The Knot, their opener for their Glowing Man tour.
SFTB's length is a non issue for me as it's not supposed to be listened to as a typical album, moreso an all encompassing cosmic journey. i can see where other people fall short with SFTB but honestly i feel that if you don't like how long it is, you're missing the point.
Keep in mind, I still gave SFTB a high 9/10. The length was the only issue I had with it and even with that said it didn't ruin the album for me by any means. Just something I didn't personally enjoy.
Honestly soundtracks for the blind doesnt feel like 2 hours and 20 minutes for me. Ill never get tired of listening to it, and every single time i listen it, i always feel like the time flies.
Going to see Swans in Glasgow tonight, August 16 2023, and watched your legacy review prior to heading out. Very, very good. One thing about that band is they're always looking forward, never back.
i loved this video, but i wish he took more of a creative, artistic view of these albums. not only are these albums sonically fantastic, but the lyrical content and the meanings sre pretty dark and impactful. i just wish he took more of the mental, twisted side of gira
When it comes to their earlier heavy material, the Young God EP is some of the best content they put out, aside from Filth. It's also noteworthy because it was Kurt Cobain's favourite Swans release, as well as one of his overall favourite records. I also really enjoy the Swans self-titled EP, which sounds unlike anything in their discography. Heavy use of saxophone and overall much more punk sounding. I also consider Swans Are Dead to be an essential listen, depsite it being a live album. Tracks like Feel Happiness, which aren't on any of their studio albums, as well as the best versions of songs like Blood Promise, Hypogirl, and Low Life Form.
So tired of new swans fans absolutely shitting on the burning world. Sure it’s not as groundbreaking as soundtracks or children of God but I believe it’s essential to their sound especially as gira Improved and expanded upon it in White light and especially angels of light. It’s a very pleasant straight up neo folk album and a huge breather after the huge Onslaught that was Filth, cop, and greed/holymoney a calm after the storm. Tho I think white light and love of life are their crowning achievement along with soundtracks those are tied as what I believe are swans at their creative and physical peak.
I don't see enough people give White Light and Love of Life the credit they deserve. They've become quite couple of my favorites over the years. I like how folky the Burning World is but maybe people didn't like it because of how different it was compared to the previous albums but it is also popular to hate haha
During Swan's hiatus in the late 90s/2000s Gira released several albums under Angels of Light which are basically a slightly stripped down, slightly more acoustic version of Swans. Well worth checking out
I often find myself being negatively biased when I hear someone mentioning that they only listen to hiphop but one can easily forget how broad and incredible of a genre hip-hop can be and the countless influences it has. So someone open-minded can provide insightful opinions and easily venture into other genres and this video confirms that. I still haven't listened to every swans record nor do I have the patience to listen to them chronologically so your video helps decide what to listen to next. Nice
You kinda talked yourself out of that negative bias there, but honestly I think you're on to something. Hip hop is awesome, but it is definitely limited as a genre. Diverse samples can only take it so far in my opinion. I think people who only listen to hip hop and never branch out to listen to the music that inspired and influences rap are doing themselves a disservice.
Without mentioning Skin & Angels of Light it's not possible to get a full perspective on Swans discography. The albums which sit between the punctuation marking the change in Swans style are just as important. I don't think I'd have become the Swans fan I did if I'd not experienced Blood Women Roses at the same time I did Holy Money. That the same musicians created such different music blew my mind.
Glad I found someone else who loves Filth but not Cop. I know Gira has criticised the drums on Filth but to me it feels like audio from some sort of industrial horror film. It's very claustrophobic and punishing while Cop loses that
My favorite album of theirs is a side project Ten Songs From Another World. From the World of Skin moniker. It has the best parts of WLFTMOI and the softer stuff. But nailed it in my opinion. Edit: I also shouldn't include their live album Kill the Child' of mid 80's material. It's just their cacophony and crescendo drone live is so much more intense and powerful than the studio albums. Probably goes for all their live albums.
15:44 same, the glowing man is an absolutely transcendental experience to listen to and the title track is some of the most energetic and intense music ever recorded
This is 2 years too late but Blind isn't from White Light From the Mouth of Infinity, its from a Gira solo album called "Drainland" and it was added as a bonus track for the reissue.
We all have different tastes, and we might be coming from different cultural backgrounds, but the most important thing each of us can do, as individuals, is to get really, really high.
Very interesting commentary. Speaking of post rock trilogies, I highly recommend you the pioneers of the movement, Talk Talk. More subtle and almost disintegrated, their last two albums (Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock) together with their singer Mark Hollis solo album seven years later form, for me, some kind of mesmerising trilogy, a counterpart to the three classic albums of Swans. Not as big in scope, but certainly as profound and totally different.
Couldn't agree more with your thoughts on the glowing man. It's almost like a film or play, with many acts and rises and falls. Frankie m and cloud of unknowing are so colossal and enveloping in ways I've never heard in music before
I'm sure you've possibly already discovered them, but if not you'd love Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists and Luciferian Towers are incredible albums
Bravo. Even I haven't attempted the whole Swans disocraphy. I had the same feelings about 'Glowing Man' as you do about 'Leaving" (which I love) - expectations. However just recently I played it and am reappraising it.
Great video. I'm personally not a fan of Greed and Holy Money either, but I think the live versions on Public Castration is a Good Idea are really good. They're very slow and repetitive, they sound very ritualistic. The entire sound is massive and songs like Coward get so much more hellish
The problem I’ve always had with Cop is that, while the guitar is quite a bit heavier, it’s missing the pulverizing punch of the two drums/two bass rhythm section from Filth. I also feel like Godflesh did what Swans did on Cop much better with Streetcleaner in 1989
Now check out the live records. They’re just as good if not better with better versions of their studio tracks. Especially Swans Are Dead. And I love hip hop as much as I love weird shit like Swans so I think you’ll enjoy it
leaving meaning is a pretty neat album imo. I think it got a lot of hate because it didn't live up to The Trilogy, but I don't think it was trying to. I think leaving meaning is a "testing the waters" album. That album basically says "The Glowing Man cannot be topped with that same sound, so lets try something new."
RYM/AOTY - the channel. That 'favourite albums' list at the start is so....unique. Kidding, of course, every early 20s white dude into off-mainstream hip-hop has the exact same fucking list. The Burning World is a fine album, it just doesn't fit as well into their discography because it's filled with compromises for the label. No standout tracks? It has 'God Damn The Sun', among their finest releases, and conceptually very important for future work. Microgenre and score obsessed. I mean this totally honestly and without wanting to come across as pretentious - you're approaching a band like Swans totally wrong. There's a whole spectrum of music that will fail to 'impress' with this approach.

It’s cool how many differing opinions people have on this band’s discography. I really like filth a lot, but to me cop tops it in almost every way. It’s one of my most listened to albums of theirs. The way the drums and bass sound is so immense, and all the auxiliary percussion sounds mixed in gives the whole thing a really unique sound. The stretch from why hide through cop is just too good. The frantic, upbeat sound of filth is totally awesome in it’s own way for sure though. Probably depends on listener background a lot too. Kids these days. Listening to 15 albums shouldn't be a chore. Why don't you go out and teach your dog to catch a frisbee or something? The records will wait. My favorite Swans albums are "Public Castration" and "Blood, Women, Roses". Gira's alcoholism ruined much of what came after. Since "The Seer", he has been attracting musicians good enough to carry him. Fight me over it.

You should check out swans are dead, it’s very similar to soundtracks but without the ambient tracks
I absolutely loved The Glowing Man, quite enjoyed To Be Kind and Soundtracks for the Blind didn't quite hit me right at the time, but that's all the Swans I've listened to. I really wanna get into all their shit, but there's so much of it and I don't have that much time.
IS THAT BEGOTTEN ON YOUR TOPPER!?
Yes it is! Shoutout to Pad Chennington for introducing me to him, his shit is great.
@@JacksonBurnsYT Pad is indeed a cool dude
bruh begotten sucks and has a literal creepypasta for a backstory why do people like it lmao
The Burning World hate spotted
Opinion ignored
worst video title on youtube
COP, GREED, HOLY MONEY , CHILDREN OF GOD and GREAT ANNIHILATOR - nothing better.
One of the best thing about Swans fans is the diversity in opinion, almost every person I talk to thinks differently about each album, it's amazing.
@@JacksonBurnsYT Thanks! I am curious how you got interested in swans if mainly interested in hip hop - what the crossover appeal was into swans? Diversity is a great thing.
@@dirtypearl I’m part of the TheNeedleDrop discord server and someone else was starting to go thru the swans discography so I decided to listen along with him
Thoughts on Public Castration? I actually think that is their magnum opus
You should listen to Lingua Ignota, the body, author & punisher
Kids these days. Listening to 15 albums shouldn't be a chore. Why don't you go out and teach your dog to catch a frisbee or something? The records will wait.
My favorite Swans albums are "Public Castration" and "Blood, Women, Roses". Gira's alcoholism ruined much of what came after. Since "The Seer", he has been attracting musicians good enough to carry him. Fight me over it.
I feel like your snobby, stereotypical boomer attitude ruins any possibility of having a proper debate over Swans' music
Thankyou mr. burns. Ifeel ashamed that I didnt really know much or heard much of Swans. I now have an idea of how to start with them. Intelligent and unpretentious reviewing of their albums. I appreciate your delivery. Onya mate!
thank g-d. I've got a dinner with my boss and the head of region tonight, and I know that Swans album question is going to come up probably over dessert, when I'm not ready for it.
Why would anyone want to NOT listen to Swans? (They are the greatest band of all time and its not even close)
Cop is slower, and heavier for it. Sludgy af and crushing. Fair take but the slowness is what makes it unique and great imo.
I listened through their discography as well, and I respect the hell out of the band, but my reviews may not be as glowing as some people:
1. To Be Kind | 8/10 | Great
2. The Seer | 8/10 | Great
3. The Glowing Man | 7/10 | Good
4. Children of God | 7/10 | Good
5. The Great Annihilator | 7/10 | Good
6. Leaving Meaning | 7/10 | Good
7. Soundtracks For the Blind | 6.5/10 | Pretty Good
8. White Light from the Mouth of Infinity | 6.5/10 | Pretty Good
9. My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky | 6/10 | Okay
10. The Burning World | 5.5/10 | Not Bad
11. Greed | 5.5/10 | Not Bad
12. Holy Money | 5.5/10 | Not Bad
13. Body to Body Job to Job | 4.5/10 | Not Good
14. Filth | 4.5/10 | Not Good
15. Love of Life | 4/10 | Weak
16. Cop | 3/10 | Bad
🤡
Pretentious
Hard disagree. I usually don’t care about peoples opinions but my god is yours shit. Explain why you don’t like Soundtracks? It seems like you’re just trying to be pretentious for pretentious’ sake.
@@coldercoronet6248 Seriously? He literally just scored their albums. It's not like there's some review attached explaining why he's above Swans or something. Imagine getting annoyed over someone's opinion on a band
Oh wow. Begotten suprised me
In a good way?
@@JacksonBurnsYT Yeah
I really like cop. In fact I definitely prefer it to filth.
Sameeee
0:18 how do you have logic in the same chart as life cycle, tpab, black midi, and a bunch of way better albums
God Damn The Sun is top 10 swans tracks idc
Mr. Jackson burns what do you think of the new Brockhampton song
New single goes hard as fuck
@@JacksonBurnsYT fuck yeah bro Danny brown fits perfectly
Luckily they had a slight return with The Beggar
Stopped watching after you said you don't like Cop.
great vid
leaving meaning suffers from the fact that it's another transitional record. It might be followed up by another classic.
So excited for The Beggar
For me it's the mf doom and logic at 0:22.
As a Major Swans fan that migrated over from Reddit, I have fighting words with ya. BURNING WORLD IS THE GREATEST NEO-FOLK ALBUM. /s
Tbh though, I would sooner pick up Burning World then most neo-folk albums.
Maybe I just don't like neo-folk then lol
@@JacksonBurnsYT nah. I probably just simp over Gira and Jarboe too much to realize Burning World's weaknesses.
It’s okay, I only really liked see no more and goddamn the sun it’s just they’ve released a lot better compared to it
I wonder where the begger sits
I didn’t know The OOZ was that good I just added it to my library when it came out and never listened to it lol
cool video!
Ok, but what is your opinion on the self titled debut EP? You didn't cover that one.
Love SWANS
No, you HAVE TO listen to Swans discography
So how would you rank their albums? Considering you didn’t like most of their early discography, and even tho you did say you liked filth it sounds like you still got problems with it, genuinely curious since I’m trying to get into them, and I don’t know where to start
www.albumoftheyear.org/user/jacksonburns/list/37707/swans-ranked/
@@JacksonBurnsYT really appreciate it fam, I listened to children of god and from there I didn’t know where to go, but this list will definitely help
No, not so you don't have to. You should listen to Swans cause they're great.
I agree with the glowing man rating as well. Tho idk your being to harsh on the burning man ablum. Yeah its their worst ablum but swans at there worst is most good bands at there best. Still think it's a superb ablum
"Jarboe's vocals on Warm"? Huh? Where?
great video
I kinda want you to listen to Godspeed! Black Emperor now. Lift your skinny fists will probably transcend you into heaven itself. Or at least be a amazing listening experience
Only heard their EP and F#A#. Awesome stuff. Lift Your Skinny Fists I'm waiting for the right moment. I heard the first crescendo and said "Fuck, this is a special album. Too special to listen to right now".
Burning World ain’t even that bad bro chill😂
What is the song at 13:51
Avatar from the album The Seer
Gira is pronounced jee-rah. Soft G.
He has pronounced Ji-Raw in interviews
@@tpags7398 let's just get this kid on the soft G and then we'll worry about the rest
@@jeffw2004 I’m probably several years younger than the dude in the video, and I discovered swans recently through the no wave stuff because I love punk, but my favorites ended up being soundtracks and the glowing man. The pronunciation was the least of my worries until I got berated for it in a discussion with a fellow fan
@@tpags7398 I've personally been berated directly by Michael Gira. Berating really gets around quickly in Swanlandia.
damn, brutal on the Burning World lmao
yoooo black midi!
THE BEGGER THE BEGGER THE BEGGER THE BEGGER
the beggar is a good album
No Wu-Tang on your top 40? Tut tut
Dude u underrated af
