Wait to Buy a Rolex Submariner

  • There are three constants in this world: life, the opposite of life, and the Rolex Submariner being mentioned in a conversation about dive watches. To some, the Submariner is as important as diving itself, if not more, as though diving were merely invented as a platform to give the Submariner purpose; for others, they’d sooner hear their own name read out in an obituary than the name of Rolex’s undersea model one more time. For them, I give you this: the Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57-and it’s very much not a Submariner.

I'm a bit surprised you didn't highlight one of the biggest advantages this has over the other dive watches: it's 10mm thick, at least 2mm thinner than the others. So refreshing design AND thin by almost any standard.

My choice for a premium dive/office watch is the JLC Polaris Mariner Date. It meets the requirement of being an anti-Submariner with its compressor style case, exhibition case-back, and better finishing quality.
However, if I am doing regular diving and require a utility watch, it would be the Citizen Promaster BN2041-81L (or the BN 2031-85E - same watch with different dial and bezel colour) that is ISO6425 compliant, powered by Eco-Drive, and comes with a Depth Gauge.

I believe that the biggest disadvantage of this particular watch (bug, not feature) is a lack of a screw-down crown. How the watch without screw-down crown could be seriously called a "dive watch"? After this comes ETA2824 based movement, which would be ok in Yema Superman for 1000 USD, but this Superocean costs 5000 USD.

I find this particular Breitling Super Ocean Heritage interesting and unique. But, it's not one I'd personally own, but, can still appreciate it exists.
For me, I personally like and would like to get a modern Triton Subphotique. Back in the days, it was actually more expensive than a Rolex. And, it actually has quite a great dive history.. even used by Marine Nationals, and the case design is quite unique with it's bullhead design. Actually, if you look at a number of French industrial designs, you'll find some very unique attributes that are a bit quirky to some. I'd give the FA-MAS "Bugel" assault rifle as a quick example. But, I digress. I really like the style and slimness of the Triton. Although, I think the price brand new with a Soprod movement seems a bit high hovering around $5k on the really nice semi-integrated bracelet. I'd say bring them down to around $3-3.5k max new, that would sit about right for me. Probably second hand is where I'd find a price for one right now, though.

However this one looks stunning, it could just be the dial colour of course. To me it looks just like a RADO Captain Cook, not a bad thing as I love that watch too, but at almost half the price, the Captain Cook would be my choice over this Superocean. As for Breitling as a brand I'm pleased they've re-released this watch, over recent years I think they kind of lost their way a bit with dive and pilot watches that have too much colour imo, loosing some of the elegance of previous models and making them look a bit cheap.

It is a lovely every day watch. It’s got an beautiful unique design, it is surprisingly thin, has enough water resistance where to I have no worries getting it wet and gives that lovely vintage feel to an extent not seen much in this genre in my opinion.

Tudor pelagos over a submariner, and I have both. So I can be a good judge. The pelagos is a stunning watch.

Nice dial. Not so nice bowl-like bezel. Prefer the Glashutte SeaQ. IMHO.

Great video! I’d love to see a comparison of a vintage sized 39mm sub (even a Tudor sub) and the new 38mm SuperOcean. I know it gets classified by Breitling as a woman’s watch based on sizing, but seems like a great all around size to me. My 37mm rado also thinks so.
That would also be a good side by side comparison. Rado Captain Cook and SuperOcean.

Got my Superocean Heritage blue two tone and it looks just incredible. Once that ceramic gets exposed under the sun.... Ahhhh pleasure.

Nice Breitling Super Ocean, I like the dial and the curve bezel. I don't like the mesh bracelet, they should have a sporty bracelet like the oyster bracelet.

Ackshually the *best* _cheaper_ alternatives to the Rolex Submariner are the Omega Seamaster 300, and the Grand Seiko SBGH291. End of discussion.

First glance I thought it was a Rado captain cook!! But then the captain cook so much better looking.
Omega 300 my preferred submariner substitute.

The sensible thing to do is to buy an in house movement, 200m water resist, rugged, functional, accurate, diver for £130, then spend the thousands left over on somewhere fab to use it! No such watch? Orient Ray II. Brilliant 👍🏻

I have lusted after this for about 2 years now - the rainbow special edition is particularly lovely - it’s what a watch should be , interesting, unique and well put together - I believe the presentation is drawing a contrast and not a comparison to the more standard divers from Rolex and Omega etc - I don’t think they would have the balls to produce a watch like this - I wish it could be slightly smaller though .. otherwise perfect

I love compressor cases. I own a legend diver. I would swap it for a jlc polaris maybe but I just dont want to spend that money on a watch at this stage if my life.

The Captain Cook by Rado looks almost exactly the same, has a better movement, and is almost half the price.
