  • Hey everyone! Today, we're taking a look back at our garden and chatting about the highs and lows we've had so far this year. There's been a lot happening, so let's jump right in!
    Successes
First up, Jasmine's little plot has been amazing! She's managed to grow 11kg of strawberries, which is way more than last year. Seriously, well done, Jasmine!
    Challenges and Solutions
Our bean bed hasn't had the best year-pests have been a real headache. But we found some cheap and cheerful solutions to deal with them. Using graze and blood, fish, and bone fertilizers has really helped keep the damage in check.
    Pepper Harvest
I'm super excited about our pepper plants! They've started producing a few tiny peppers, and even though it's a small harvest, it feels like a big win. There's just something so satisfying about seeing those little peppers coming in.
    Gardening Tips and Tricks
This time of year is all about seeing the payoff in the veggie garden. We've been trying out loads of gardening tips and tricks to make the most of our space, and we'll be sharing those with you in this video.
    Tomato Trellis Inspiration
Our tomato trellis has been a game-changer this year. It's holding up all our green tomatoes really well, and I can't wait for them to start turning red. Gardening in the UK has been tough this year, and this bed definitely shows it. We've only had a few ripe tomatoes so far, but I'm so excited to see more coming.
I hope this little garden tour gives you some inspiration to get out there and grow your own, whether you're just starting out or have been gardening for years.
Thanks so much for watching! If you like our videos, please consider subscribing to keep up with all our gardening adventures.
    Happy gardening, everyone!

@@ThatBritishHomestead Squash!!!! We've had one yellow squash and two more trying to come on. Wi ter squash is just now beginning to set fruit...not sure if they'll have time to make much or not. Also, our corn is struggling due to drought. We've had excessive heat (weeks of 80+ Fahrenheit temps...) and little rain. I'll say one thing though....we're covered up with green beans and tomatoes, so that's a welcome blessing!

@@ThatBritishHomestead I’m in the southern hemisphere (South Africa) so it’s winter here, but I’m really grateful that our winters are really mild. I started my carrots at the beginning of winter and I’m pleased to report that they are doing fantastically well. I should be harvesting in very early spring (which is in September for us). Happy gardening 🥕👩🏽‍🌾

    Woah that's a big carrot!
Lol lovely singing Nik! Been cracking up watching this! Flowa's! Our child keeps correcting my London diction the cheeky bugger! I thinking they are getting their own back from me correcting them during reading time, when i make an effect to speak the Queens English nowadays! As a dyslexic, i much prefer the phonetic sets they teach now. I have a brain like a sieve but do you homeschool Jasmine? I want to homeschool ours but being an only child, it would seem unfair socially. They keep resetting them, to be in line with the other kids in the year and then they get bored. Did i say my Dutch niece is also called Jasmin? It is without an e as that is the Dutch spelling of that.
Our 2nd round of dwarf green beans are just coming up. We pretty much froze a lot of it as it came up so quickly! First time growing them. Inter planted those within the existing ones. I need to check the growing time as i might be able to get another cheeky flush on another sowing.
Strange that with your courgettes. We had trouble last few years growing them always in pots and now we are using the sandpit they did us well. They are starting to get tired but we have another two sowed to replace them. Weirdly one didn't do so well in one corner. I have a funny feeling that the meres/horse tail is restricting its growth.
I tried direct sowing swede and pak choi white stem and they either got eaten or didn't germinate. Going to do what Allie said and sow them in trays now like i do with beetroot, pak choi Shanghai, spinach chard and spinach. Did you see the size of her swede?!
Branston for days! You know i bought those seeds coz of you! lol
Not sure where you are but stay clear of E17 on Wednesday if you can. Looks like something is happening according to sm. I used to live in Wandsworth and remember the riots.
My Nan (Dad's mum) was from Bethnal Green before she was drafted in WW2 to the Midlands where she met my Granddad. They moved to Brighton when she got pregnant and then later on when they built the new estate blocks moved to SW London when my Dad was 5 and where i grew up, after she left my grandad to go to Australia as a 10 pound Pomme. Her eldest daughter and son then joined her going via the silk road. I am the only one left still living in London, after everyone leaving London.
Anyway, stay safe, take care and have a lovely week! x

Sadly no we don't homeschool, this is an ongoing disgustiok in my house. She, jas, is going into secondary not next year the year after. I am a science teacher and I would love to homeschool. I think that having the social side can be countered but making sure you socialise them very well. We have just come back from our friends house where the kids have played for hours! I love the name Jasmine! We have Jasmine growing in our garden too!
I'm always being told about my accent. I'm proud of where I grow up! And we were always pressured to use the queens English in schools I worked in.
Allies swede was a joke I don't think I've ever seen such big swede made me laugh as mine looked like pencils at the same time! I can't wait to get mine but I only eat it in the winter. I told her make it into branstan! Ahah I'm sure you'll love them when they germinate and when your eatting them you can blame me lol
What's happening down London... it makes me so nervous, I'm really not good in crowds so I never go up town!

@@ThatBritishHomestead Ah cool. What years/age group do you teach? They are mixing the classes up next year as they said it was to make it more even. Our child is upset as they won't be with both of their friends next year, just one that doesn't really share all of the same interests as the other one. Will reserve judgement when we see the new class mix. We did get a lot of international kids last two years in the class so that might be a factor.
How did it go over lockdown? The first year for us they had 3 teachers but then also had the other class teacher doing online. 2021, had the same teacher but also other online teachers from other schools. 2022 3 teachers. 2023 one teacher. 2023/2024 same teacher but part time. She has now left to do private homeschooling. Next years teacher is the first man teacher, so will be an interesting new format. He likes art and English Lit, so hopefully will bring out more of that in our child. Our child is not really into crafts but can draw really well like my sister did at their age.
We have both winter white Jasmine and Summer yellow (not sure of the exact names without looking at the tags)
There is a variety of Jasmine that is edible but we don't have that. There's a cool doc on YT how they make the perfume but not for the faint of heart..
Working in IT, i found overall, i was treated better speaking the Queen's English, also whilst talking about football....
They also had a mental flip that hubby was the primary carer for our child, when i went back to work. When i was rarely allowed to work from work, my manager would constantly call me. Slightly different to the voice meetings we had when he was "working from home", alone with the kids screaming in the background! #2tier
Like i said to Allie, i'm going to sow the swede's and pak choi - white stems, like i do my beetroot, pak choi Shanghi etc. I don't think the swedes germinated and the different/ bigger pak choi that did was eaten!
Yes lots of protests planned today around the UK, according to twitter. Only one in London is Walthamstow as far as i have seen. Like i said before. Our garden is my safe space.
I don't do FB or IG anymore because of online nonsense. I gander at twitter and reddit. My email address is contactanykeylady@gmail.com. I can send your pictures to rate my garden! lol
