I know Tommy on a personal level and he would go out of his way to help any van lifers or wannabes fulfill their dreams. Not only is he suited to van life he would prove one of the greatest assets we have driving the roads here. I hope we get to see his van here when he is done. His can do attitude is infectious and I think he is a great person. He has been living paycheck to paycheck helping out others and I’m sure any donations made to him would be used wisely. But don’t feel the need to donate, enjoy Tommy for what he is, upbeat and dreamy. Glad Bob did a video on him as he did me some time ago. Great video Bob! Best, Chris
My wife and I may be forced into van life, so this is an excellent idea. Pre-set yourself for the change and avoid some of the "culture shock" of the change. My wife and I decided to experiment with sponge baths. Instead of a shower every day or ever other day, we are having a sponge bath every morning. We can easily go a week and still smell fresh and clean. We have gone two weeks with traditional bathing but being sure to have the daily sponge bath. We still find ourselves clean and fresh smelling.
Loved this video! What better way to visualize what you want in life than to make a make believe version of it? I also liked the fact that he’s thinking “big” with 20 gallons of water, a shower and a washing machine! And why not? He might change his mind about a few things while on the road , but at least he’s excited about it and looks forward to it. I hope this helps a few folks who are sitting at home, depressed, to realize that you can generate excitement in your life by taking little steps in the direction of what you would like to see happening for you. And thank you Bob for offering people an alternative to a boring and potentially bad life after retirement by introducing them to vanlife and teaching them what you have learned.
OH ... MY ... GAH!!!! Quick story. I was having doubts today that the Universe is helping me get what I need to start travelling even on a part-time basis. As doubts never feel good, you can imagine my day didn't feel like it was going well. Long story short, I end up watching this video and one of the first thing he says is about how the Universe will drop the right pieces in place when [i ] do [my] part. Touche Universe, Touche. Now for the Universe to show me what my part is so I can get to work. THANK YOU Bob abd everyone around you, for doing what you do!
My goodness, he is creative and motivational! What a great idea when you cannot immediately buy a van. Also, the power of positive thinking is exhibited here. Good for you, Tommy.
Truman Capote voice, with so very much to offer, I was so moved by his wonderful video. I certainly hope the universe aligns up well for him! What a kind & gentle soul. All the best to you, Tommy.
Bob you have really inspired him and he’s learned a lot because of you! He is doing a great job! There maybe little changes when he gets into a van but he’s way ahead with the prep work he’s done. Good job Bob👏🏻🌻🌻🌻
Tom is the MAN!!! Way yo go!! I've been thinking and wanting a van for several yeas, I've done little to nothing to make it happen. I've done all the research, and I have a plan for designing the van, but beyond that, It's just s dream. Thank you Tom for being an example and inspiration. You gave me some great ideas for being proactive about making my dream come true, Mush respect!!
That is what my friend is doing she can't go til next spring so we are PRE preparing now and it is a good thing because we quickly changed just about everything good topic thanks you guys ..from two old gals getting ready to do it Sarah and Mary from Florida
I'm also presently preparing my bedroom to build a campershell for my f150. I've had financial hardships this past year, although I know that when April 5th 2020 comes.... I will be ready to drive away, leaving the four walls behind me. I suffer with depression and seeing this video and the live feed on depression has truly giving me the extra empowerment that I need to complete my own baby steps towards Nomadic Living and the lifestyle that I've dreamt of for years. Thanks again Bob for all You do for us! Gypsy Georgia!
@@diannahaas7171 thank you so much.! My ❤ longs to be with the Nomadic Community. As an artist, I too had a 3 month taste of living near Quartsite Arizona and met so many nice people. I even worked in the Big Tent. Loved being free from the rat race. I'm currently on disability and doing my best to get my truck converted.
This is genius! One of the best videos I've ever seen on TH-cam, much less on Bob's channel. I hope Tommy keeps us updated...I can't wait to see him hit the road and get a report on that. No doubt it'll be super interesting. The one thing I would change is that I would wash my clothes at a laundromat. It seems the hassle and space taken is not worth it when we can use someone else's facility once a week. But Tommy is a very smart person and knows what he is doing....what do I know. Thanks to Bob and a multitude of thanks to Tommy for making this inspiring video! Yay, Tommy!!!
Tommy,a small forced air port to dryer,,,then slightly larger port ,then with flexable hose, exalst to outside, for forced air ,think about 12 volt elect ronics fan ,in a box maybe attatched to dryer, may want blower not attatched,as it could be of use for spot drying in small areas,,,,now the cost of this idea,at 86 yrs age i still enjoy a cheeseburger,,root beer with fries,,,ps i just bought 1995 roadtrek and see you or other nomads on the road soon.......
This is fascinating! What ingenuity! So many great ideas. I know this gentlemen will be blessed by the universe to make his van life a happy one. God bless you both.
Thanks. There are several other things I wish I'd thought to mention in the video: 1. Using little S hooks instead of clothes hangers to save space 2. a tiny 12v-to-USB converter to supply 5v USB power when both laptop and 120v AC converter are turned off. 3. Using cardboard packing boxes lines with plastic trash bags to use as needed for laundry, which fold flat to store when not needed. 4. I should have pointed out that the black tub shown is also the floor of the shower to stand in so water doesn't run across the floor.
This is a great approach. I'm doing this with my build in the garage as I work on it. Eventually will be cooking using only my vehicle "kit" (fridge, tools, camp stove, etc.). Anyone with a vehicle should be able to practice with nights in it while still at home.
Wow this guy is brilliant, he’s put some serious thought into this, and with his limited budget will end up with an amazing set up . What a great idea to do this first to iron out the bugs
I had to REALLY SMILE when I saw this video pop into my feed this morning. I am doing something similar though not nearly as advanced as Tommy. I currently live in a 1 BR apartment but call my living room area "my RV". The bedroom is for storage only. I am also using the dual compartment type of washing machine that Tommy has, and I've had mine for about 3 years. It's true that the spinner gets clothes to nearly dry and it cleans sometimes better than a commercial washer. As a writer and videographer, I am thrilled to be able to do laundry inside my own quarters rather than go to the laundry facility nearby. For various reasons I have not had the open door for me yet to move into an RV, but I have found a way to move actively in that direction. I lived in a small RV for about a year several years ago and I know I would want/need a wet bath, small kitchen sink of some sort, stove/burner of some sort, and some sort of refrigeration. I am looking for a van containing those features. Once I find it, I believe I'll be only a few steps from being ready. It's really nice to see I'm not the only one "living in an RV" inside my apartment! Thank you Tommy for articulating your build so well, and thank you Bob for posting this interview!
Song of the Bride, there are several ways to incorporate the wet bath without making it permanent. Tommy shows one way. Check out the "Hour Shower" video by gone boondocking. His setup is great and small enough for a cargo trailer or van. A kitchen sink can be gravity fed water into a collapsable container. Easier to build and can be put away. Extensions for your counter also provide more space when needed like cooking, and fold away when not needed. Good luck with your plans.
This is one of the smartest ideas I have seen since I started watching nomad videos almost two years ago. The affect it has had on his attitude is really inspiring!
Great video.I love Toms connection to the universe. He's attracting what he wants and needs. I'm impressed with the painstaking work he did to measure everything out to live I his future van. This has to be one of the best videos......so uplifting for those like me who aren't ready to live the lifestyle yet. I love that post hole digger!
Bravo1 I'm onto it. Doing the same here. I'm prototyping a 7x12 room to approximate how I would like to build out an extended high top van - probably the longest Ford Transit Cargo van. I even squeezed in a kitchen galley with a freezer, pantry, and small countertop space. It is a lot of fun. I've realized the galley can be even smaller, because like yourself, my ways of eating are improving and becoming simpler.
Wow what a great attitude Tommy has! It will take him far. His preparation and forethought will bring to him the life that he wants to live. Good luck Tommy!
This was an amazing video. What Tommy is doing is awesome. He’s creating his own reality. (🙌🏽🙌🏽 HUGE!!) I would like to hit the road in 2 years. I’ve watched countless videos. I’m currently paying off debt & I’ve started a small savings but haven’t done anything beyond that as far as a mock build. Tommy is such an inspiration and he has such a pleasant spirit. He deserves everything good that’s coming his way. Thank you, Tommy!!🙏🏽😊❤️
Great job Tommy! Love your bedroom build and can't wait til it is all moved into your dream van. You are so inspirational. I thought Bob was the most inspirational vanner, but you are sprinting up to him. So impressed with your deep thinking, patience, positive attitude, and desire to help others through your example.
Good on you Tommy! Two Meander did a video on this last year ... taped off a van in a bedroom and stacked boxes to exactly replicate the walls, windows and doors of a van. Also helps you know just how much you can take with you. You’ve got this Tommy. Wtg.
Great video I would like to know more about this man and how he eats I’ve been on the road for a while and eating lotta fast food and foods that are good thank you for this video card bless everybody out there
omg, Visiting Professor Tommy is the best adjunct faculty that Provost Bob Wells has ever invited to speak at CheapRVLiving Unviersity. This is expert-level design prototyping!
It's fascinating to see how others prioritize necessities. My kitchen takes up half my home on wheels, but to each their own. Tommy, none of my business, but you might want to trade in the post hole digger with a shovel. Post hole diggers take more muscle and can only be used for one thing. A shovel can be used for multiple projects...doucing fires, digging yourself out if you get stuck, etc., and you can use your body weight to dig. Good luck and happy trails to you.
Great ideas about the Prep before going!...For the bathroom buckets what i always did in nature was with a soft ring or seat on the bucket to sit,Knocked out the bottom of the bucket making a hole two hand wide or complete knock out bottom of bucket then when you dig a hole to put bucket over , that way no bags and quick comfy go then pull bucket up and cover can always have potting soil or peat moss in plastic bag for covering or use dug up dirt.... Or get shower tent and make a flap opening on bottom to put tent over dug hole and collect dirt for covering from or before inside shower tent, put bottomless bucket over poop hole and the opening in bottom of shower tent ,poop and move bucket and cover ,you can always use velcro or tape on flap made in tent bottom when and if to seal bottom when not using after making hole(Mobil out house).Might waste bucket but find ole used one some where like thrift store,Also can cut bottom of bucket out and save then attach with hinges screwed in or rings with holes drilled to have a swing away bottom.
What a great idea! I wish Tommy health and happiness! He seems like a nice guy with a great attitude and personality! I'm delighted his finances are allowing him to progress on his dream of van life ❣
What a wonderfully done video. I can’t say enough about how well thought out and executed Tommy presented himself and his pseudo Van. I’m in process of building a more tiny version but can utilize many of his suggestions. And he even solved the problems he encountered with no solar access for his panels. How ingenuous‼️ Tommy is a very talented gentleman who could well start a consulting business for others who choose to live their dream NOW!!! 💪💪💪 I will certainly watch this many times and share with others at the Van Build in Parker happening right now. And what’s most important is that when he acquires his actual Van, well, he can move right in and hit the road immediately 👍😁 I wish him great happiness as he explores the country making new lifelong friends which he will. 🙏🙏🙏 Bob for posting this. 🐸💃🐸
This is amazing! Tommy has super ideas and obvious mechanical and electrical skills but I am most impressed with his positive 'Thoughts-Create-Reality' outlook and Faith! I wish him a happy long Van Life Soon! It was also an excellent reminder of many of Bob's lessons.
Way to go Tommy. I like the slide out desk. I have been running without a fridge or cooler on my practice trips for six months now and I really don't feel the need for one. You look like you are having fun with your experiment and your enthusiasm is uplifting. I to am financially challenged on my nomadic adventure and I'm glad the universe gave you an opportunity to reach for your dreams. I wish you the best of luck and hope to meet you around the campfire someday.
This video is FANTASTIC!!! Thank you for putting in the effort Tommy, and thank you Bob, for having the wisdom to get him on your channel and ask all the right questions. Best wishes to you both!
Bob Again Thank You This must have been one of your easiest vids You got to sit and watch with the rest of us Please keep us up to date on tommy (WHO says us Old Farts don't know what were doing) Were just getting started the second time around is all
Wow!! I love the pull out desk with the plywood and two drawers!!! This video is extremely informative he’s really done his research! I also really love his philosophy on how when you set your mind on something, things will come together! Great job!! I’m not on the road yet but I’ve definitely got a lot out of this video! Great job!
Way to go Tommy...thank you Bob for sharing this video. I am working towards my own journey and have designed what I want. I've been talking about sectioning off my bedroom but this gives me that extra push to follow thru. Thanks Tommy for sharing this with the rest of us wannabe newbirs. Love ya both!!!
Very clever approach. Building a rig is easy, figuring out what you actually need requires experience. It's nice to see more people like him striving towards van life. It's a good, fun, healthy, adventurous and rewarding way to live, especially for retirees.
You're right, figuring out what I actually need to take with me is the hard part, but is slowly taking shape day by day. The bedroom van is my way of discovering through experience what goes and what doesn't.
That is such a great idea. Really enjoyed the video, all the best to Tommy on his travels in the spring! Thank you Bob for letting us meet Tommy, smart guy!
Tommy has done an awesome job in his research and set up. He will do very well when he is out on the road because he already knows what to expect. I wish him the best of luck and hope you do another video when he is finally on the road to let us all know how he is doing. Excellent video Bob!
Good job at getting a head start on living in a van. The post hole digger is a great idea where the ground is soft and loamy. If you get into parts of the country where the soil is thin, think mountains, you may have to come up with another solution, but for the most part it's a great idea.
Way to go, Tommy! Thanks for sharing the well thought out plan. I really enjoy watching folks like this with innovative ideas, and Tommy was so helpful and sweet. I hope we cross paths with him someday when he is traveling in the home on wheels he gets and puts together! And thank you, CRVL, for featuring a great video!
Wow I'm so impressed with how this man has prepared his space, so well organized and thought out. Thank you so much Tommy for taking the time to share this video! I have watched hundreds of videos in the last year and this by far has been the best one for me to actually realize that I should continue my quest by setting this up in my space as well. I have been busy this past year downsizing my stuff, learning to eat less and looking into the different possibilities of van/truck/bus styles that are out there. I'm not financially able to buy a vehicle right now either but I've started a savings plan. One of the things he mentions is how his mood has improved since being able to set this up and I can see how that will be so helpful for many people who look to your videos Bob for inspiration and support.
Tommy! You are amazing, so creative and upbeat. Thank you for sharing your preparations with us. I've been on the road for almost two years, but I learned some things from you. Hopefully, you will be out and about in your van soon.
I love what this gentleman has done. Very great ideas. Bob Wells was my inspiration and I listen ravenously to each of his videos for 3 years before we made the move. You both are an inspiration. Thanks.
I love this one KUDOS! Bob and Tommy. This was an excellent vid! I Love everything about how Tommy is creating the reality he wants. I believe "it" works just the way Tommy is presenting it. How the universe provides when u do ur part. It's a co-creation. Good work Tommy! U are now at the top of my list of nomads I want to meet. I hope to meet u soon.... maybe RTR 2020....?
This is an awesome idea. I had been thinking I should start living in just a portion of my 3 br home to get used to less space but building a model is even better. I dont have my van yet either but planning to by next spring. Thanks for this super idea and the inspiration in the opening Tommy. Maybe I'll see you on the road next year.
That was a great demonstration! It really is true when the wheels start turning in your head it’s the beginning of you way to goals you want for your life.
I am working my way towards getting and living in a van. It is a slow process, but every time I take more steps towards my goal more doors open. Interestingly I also am considering and thinking out how to start living already like I am in a van. This gave me the push to go for this next step.
YES! A washing machine - I don't know why more vandwellers with showers don't have one. I found one on Amazon that is 17" square and can be moved in and out of a shower stall. I did have fun at the local laundromat today - sketching out floorplans - while using the larger machines for some comforters and small rugs.
Thank you Tom and Bob. I know I'm not alone in preparing to leave, there are so many of us. It is such a comfort to see, first hand though, HOW others are doing it. I too am disabled and on limited income. My goals are s.l.o.w.l.y. coming to fruition and really appreciate the ideas that Tom has shown. I feel a little more energized about my goals. Thank you both.
Bob, Please share with us his van when he’s actually there. I can’t wait to see it. What a wonderful kind and smart man. I wish someday to be his friend 💗
Hell man I did that when I was 18 and moved away from home. Now I am 69, living in my dodge caravan full time and travelling. You are right though, it helped.
If I don't say so myself I do believe that gentleman is more prepared than I am. I didn't think about the width of the walls how they would affect you as they got taller and too with not having any Windows to look out that definitely makes a big difference on your perspective of space. I will have to work on that. I've got the tape on the floor but I don't have it built up against the wall. I wish him all the best and I thank you so much Bob for you being you safe travels my friend may we meet someday soon
What a sweetheart, best way to describe "manifesting" the things you want. I did the same thing and built a cardboard box in my livingroom with the size lined out and added all my items to the space.
I know Tommy on a personal level and he would go out of his way to help any van lifers or wannabes fulfill their dreams. Not only is he suited to van life he would prove one of the greatest assets we have driving the roads here. I hope we get to see his van here when he is done. I love Toms spirit and positive attitude. He has done a great job on the bedroom setup. Lots of new ideas to look at.
I've been doing something similar in my bedroom too
Very cool, Paula. I'd like to see your bedroom van featured on Bob's channel.
Stil working on the build .
What a great way to find out about van life before you go out on the road. Thanks Bob for sharing what Tommy did.
omg, Visiting Professor Tommy is the best adjunct faculty that Provost Bob Wells has ever invited to speak at CheapRVLiving Unviersity.
This is expert-level design prototyping!
I’m on the same track! I love his enthusiasm! Thank you!
I like my post hole digger, but I agree with you. I've always known I'll need a shovel too, for the very reasons you've listed.
Really clever idea to use a bucket that way. It wouldn't work everywhere, but a lot of places it would. Thanks for the tip.
Tommy's narration skills are excellent!
Please do an update when he actually gets his van! I am so excited for him! :)
Tommy is a great example. Bob, this is one of your best interviews. Very inspiring!
I will certainly watch this many times and share with others at the Van Build in Parker happening right now.
And what’s most important is that when he acquires his actual Van, well, he can move right in and hit the road immediately 👍😁
I wish him great happiness as he explores the country making new lifelong friends which he will.
I hope you do a follow up video once he's got his van and fitted it out, so we can see exactly how he's fared!
I too wish he well! He’s a great example of what can happen when realize you can do something now toward your goals. Never give up and never give in.
Bob Again Thank You This must have been one of your easiest vids You got to sit and watch with the rest of us Please keep us up to date on tommy (WHO says us Old Farts don't know what were doing) Were just getting started the second time around is all
With an attitude like yours, you can't fail! I saw a lot of out of the box thinking in this video. I wish the best for you!
Finally! someone who appreciates clean clothes and scuttles cold food as I do. Never seen this is all those videos I watch.
Hehehe... indeed
Wow!! I love the pull out desk with the plywood and two drawers!!! This video is extremely informative he’s really done his research! I also really love his philosophy on how when you set your mind on something, things will come together! Great job!! I’m not on the road yet but I’ve definitely got a lot out of this video! Great job!
Bob told me what he likes is the bed that folds out of the way of the side door, since the side door is usually wasted space.
Thanks so much Bob for sharing this video; I just love his spirit and design;👍👍👍HAPPY journey Tommy God bless you. 😇😇😇
I am completely blown away. What an incredible soul.
What a clever man! God bless you and thank you for sharing this with us. Bob, here’s another one for the “well done” column for you. ❤️❤️❤️
good for him!!! he’ll inspire lots of hesitant future dwellers!
It’s amazing, the amount of thought going into Tommy’s set up. Great video.
Very cool Tommy, I wish you much luck in getting that van and starting your travels!
Awesome ideas .If you fail to plan than you plan to fail .
What a great guy, he is very positive so i know he will have his van home very soon.. :)
This is wonderful! When I thought about living in your house like you were living in a van this is not what I was imagining. Great info guys
This guy has a plan! very impressed with his baby steps. Thanks for sharing
Tommy! You are amazing, so creative and upbeat. Thank you for sharing your preparations with us. I've been on the road for almost two years, but I learned some things from you. Hopefully, you will be out and about in your van soon.
Wow, Great prep work Tommy! Definitely will help people. Thanks for sharing Bob.👍🙂
I love what this gentleman has done. Very great ideas. Bob Wells was my inspiration and I listen ravenously to each of his videos for 3 years before we made the move. You both are an inspiration. Thanks.
Tommy is such an inspiration.
I realized I kinda do this already. I naturally spend about 90% of the time I’m home in one area so it wouldn’t be hard at all to do it purposefully.
Amazing. Great minds think alike! I have recently decided to try to live a van life in my home in preparation.
I am working my way towards getting and living in a van. It is a slow process, but every time I take more steps towards my goal more doors open. Interestingly I also am considering and thinking out how to start living already like I am in a van. This gave me the push to go for this next step.
Very smart man!!!!!he will go places. God bless him!!!❤🙏
YES! A washing machine - I don't know why more vandwellers with showers don't have one. I found one on Amazon that is 17" square and can be moved in and out of a shower stall.
I did have fun at the local laundromat today - sketching out floorplans - while using the larger machines for some comforters and small rugs.
Clever thinking! Also rent a van and go camp for a weekend.
You will learn a LOT!
I loved the idea when Bob mentioned it in his video, but seeing it in action is awesome! Good luck Tommy!
He is so sweet and adorable. God bless him and i wish him all the best.
Hell man I did that when I was 18 and moved away from home. Now I am 69, living in my dodge caravan full time and travelling. You are right though, it helped.
I like the idea of building a slide-out desk from plastic drawer units. Very cool!
Tommy you are awesome! May the universe bless you richly. You're going to make this. I wish you a happy life. :)
VERY HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE 🙏🏿
What a great idea, and fun and creative and hopeful and practical. Thanks for this
This video has offered new ideas that I never thought of. Thanks
What a sweetheart, best way to describe "manifesting" the things you want. I did the same thing and built a cardboard box in my livingroom with the size lined out and added all my items to the space.
