Well, I watched the video last night about the rolling Stone top 250 guitar players of all time.... Somewhat amazingly, Holdsworth, Fripp, Michael hedges etc etc etc were not on that list.... So I think maybe it just has to do with plain old popularity. Although, some number of years back I was thinking to myself that, surely it would have hit in the hundreds of thousands after several years... LOL.... Uuuhhhh, not necessarily, apparently
@@terrapin323 Tory has a husband? Cool... That was a knee jerk response plus I don't know Holdsworth's music that deeply. Great swing feel on the solo. Tory you operate on 5G while everyone else is struggling to make 4G (if talent and skill were like a telecom system) So much beautiful musical information.
Hi, Tory! I've never posted on your site before, but I've been following it for about a year now. I think you're an amazing musician and you've definitely got your own style; something that's not easy to do in this day and age! Anyway, about a month or so after Allan passed away, we had a tribute concert for him (well actually for his daughters to raise money for funeral expenses) at a club in Chicago. There were a bunch of guitar players and we each had time for two tunes. I chose some of the "easier" ones: "Fred" and "Letters of Marque." I was/am a huge Holdsy fan ever since hearing that Tony Williams Lifetime album, "Believe It!" And I couldn't! I've seen him live a half dozen times... with my jaw on the floor each time! Anyway, I think it's so cool that you're paying tribute to him in your own inimitable way, so THANKS!
Listening on Adam A5X monitors. I can say I knew Tory before she self-combusted (because she was so fire!). heheh I knew Tory before she OD'd (because she was so dope!) ok... trying to be funny. :( Man, you really have those dang arpeggio octaves down. Not just maj or min but extended ones that are kind of like 5 and 6 notes. Almost a full scale but not. How you can navigate chords on the left and soloing is just crazy. I'd be stumbling over my left hand notes and my fingers are totally not long and percussive enough to tap just on my right hand like a piano player. But it's always fun watching you do this tapping magic. I rewatched the Paganini one yesterday. That has so many techniques and ideas. Very cool stuff.
I was accepted into the group and propped you up not realizing you're a member. You obviously know Chip. Those who were aware were like, "That's Tory!" those who weren't aware were like "Dear God!" That was so funny!
Best part is you keep grooving out on the drum machine and stare away from it. Wonderful cover and yeah, you’re so talented yaddah yaddah yaddah… Someday everyone will see the insane badass in Tory. Can’t believe she doesn’t have like eleventy bajillion followers 😢
It kind of swings already, I mean the original version he did.... Gary Novak would just play like a regular jazz type beat instead of all of the extra stuff that Gary husband and Chad wakerman would do...
Amazing! Gotta say I find this more listenable and inspiring than Holdsworths own album version. Less stressed, more time, more space, more musical. The bass doesn't getting in the way helps a lot. The drumming is stellar. @yamahaglobal should get you on their socials pronto!!
Well thanks, that's an enormous compliment. I kind of like the hard edge to alienation and sort of vibe that holdsworth gave off though... I'm intentionally trying to do more of a Corea acoustic band or Keith Jarrett type thing.... It's kind of this aesthetic, you know plus where I'm shooting in the room it's kind of an intimate thing but it's still kind of a big sound at the same time... Sort of like my own NPR tiny desk setup. That's why I've been using this modern Jazz preset kit and this thing instead of the regular full-on modern acoustic kits, it kind of has that vibe. I would also point out that a lot of the time, since I already have spent so much time developing the whole pianistic approach to comping while you're playing etc that's just how I do a lot of arrangements, it's not even like me trying to impress anyone, it's just that I like the sound, The rhythms, the feel etc the whole approach. It kind of changes your trajectory mentally when you're just playing the lead kind of a thing... You might even have a tendency to play too much.
@@TorySlusher interesting observation about the alienation! I digg that in No Wave, Industrial etc but for Holdsworth I never read it that way. Maybe it's the mixes and productions. I.O.U is ok, but everything later sounds very 80's in a bad way to me.
I almost cried listening to this. This is one of my favourite Allan's songs and your phrasing was too smooth... I just came across your channel and I have subscribed.
I don't know if it's really changing anything, I just have more pads and better response, I've already kind of already know how this stuff works, even if it was in my head or just listening to it or looking at the notation etc I used to meticulously program in drum parts, so this is like instant composition in a way
Very interesting...and lovely as usual! Nothing wrong with trios, right? I will say that as amazing as Chick was, he sounded almost robotic at times. Your playing tends to be more organic to my ear. Anyway, thanks for pulling this off. I would love to hear you play The Sixteen Men of Tain. Would the FGDP work for that tune?
Watching unpressured playing at any speed, taking time to think it out where there appears no time, to get past the work to the music. That's coming through as a concept to pursue, even maybe for beginners to see in action.
Thanks, I might actually play bass on some tune where there's more going on with that instrument.... I tend to just mostly use the bass guitar as a support instrument, opting to just take solos with the guitar or drums or something, it would be nice to have a bass player collaborator TBH
Amazing chops! (and, like always, everything else) You shredded way better than many people who attempt to do such covers with distortion. As we used to say back then, Holdsworht never fails, and also Tory never fails too.

It sounds pretty good on a decent speaker system or with headphones, FYI...
The stereo separation of the new drum device comes out nicely with headphones. Sounds great.
Always listen with headphones. The sound is good, but the playing and the dynamics makes it awesome...
Headphones were my downfall on acquiring tinnitus, or maybe cranking the amp all the way up and standing in front of it for hours...
I’ve never seen a court stenographer with so much rhythm
😆... I kind of like that, maybe my cool drummer nickname can be *the stenographer*....
