She does the drum machine beats also and that is a new instrument for her. I lived with her and never came across such a talent AND she's so smart (and sweet as can be) on top! ❤M
Once again fantastic. Since you mentioned Danny Gatton... I think you can rightly take over "best guitar player you have never heard of" because you are so darn good and not enough people know you (yet I hope)
This is insane! 😮 In a very good way! I like to watch your videos daily just to remind me that practically anything is possible on the guitar, because you're doing it all. And your finger drumming has reached a new level on this tune! Bravo Tory! 👏👏👏👏
A great version of a great composition. Must check out Mike Stern some more. Have seen him live, but I only went for DENNIS CHAMBERS! Great drumming, by the way. That Yamaha has unleashed the fury!
For a while now, I’ve been bored with the typical rock guitar players. Even though this genre is very new to me, I love it. I wish I could like this video more than once. Very impressive. Thank you. I WILL watch all the content on your channel.
Are you familiar with Glenn Gould's quote? 'Fingers don't have much to do with playing the piano. The idea that they do must be unlearned.' I feel like Keith Jarrett got that and you remind me of him. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful interpretations of these stellar tunes.
Thanks, I actually used to really focus on Keith Jarrett's trio playing, I mean like particularly the standards records.... It's just the way that he lyrically improvises while comping, it's a very interesting conversation with oneself... Sometimes that bleeds over into this kind of thing, although this is coming from more of a synthesizer perspective, something like that, even though it's not a synthesizer...
Thanks, yeah, I've been trying to figure out some gimmicky way to do both at the same time, including having pre-prepared videos to play along with which I interact with live on stage, etc Loopers etc... I think I could probably get away with using a looper and then kind of switching back and forth intermittently
Hi Tory, I have been binge watching your videos for a long time now and don't ever comment, lol. This one I have to say really floored me. You are creating some otherworldly lines here and really bringing something new and fresh to the guitar world and jazz in general. NOBODY is doing that nowadays. All of these guys that are the toast of the town and getting featured regularly on Rick Beatos platform are just rehashing the same ole same. There's an intellect and a technique at work here that im afraid most of these "You Tube stars" will not be catching up to any time soon. I think you will have to be protected, and therefore I am offering up my services as bodyguard. For payment you can throw me some riffs here and there to gnaw on, while I play catch up! I'm enjoying being here before your channel "blows up" and then everyone is gonna want a piece. PS - The pedal steel licks were very very cool but im always here for them jazz lines. 😎 Cheers from Los Angeles! - RD
Mind if I become a fan? I know it's just my second video and all, but... When someone knows how to touch a guitar, I really go all in. And I wanna go all in!
Excellent...! I went and watched a video after watching yours... live from Hamburg 1987 Michael Brecker Group..whoa...! That Mike stern had quite the guitar solo....what a whaler on the 6strings...! Cheers
Great work Tory! That was fun as heck, enjoyed the taffy-like, country bends and seamless textural transitions. Bridge pickup ftw! very cool! Take care and hope your day is going groovy! =)
My favorite Stern fusion tune done in a cool new way. 5:07 reminds me a bit of Steve Vai’s “Attitude Song” lick interpolating 80s King Crimson ala Frame by Frame - prescient given Vai’s role in that upcoming Beat tour. I dig this version a lot. Great tones and playing as usual.
Yeah, that whole sort of contrapuntal interlocking two-part stuff is definitely of the crimson flavor... And if I'm not careful I will always throw in a crazy tapping lick, something reminiscent of Steve Vai or Greg Howe or Holdworth
I loved and enjoyed (is that redundant) how you (as always it seems) you made this your own, but at the same time you echoed the head with accelerations and decelerations, but that seems fairly indigenous to you anyway. You're doing these mind blowing things so casually, and having so much fun doing it!
Brecker and Stern played a lot of notes over the tune live .... I'm kind of doing that plus doing other sort of lyrical or weird pedal steel things.... That's kind of how I see it
@@TorySlusher Brecker is a monstah! Were you rolling with the 1987 gig with Brecker on EWI? May I be honest? Your playing is much more interesting than Mike Stern's. But he wrote that tune! I saw him play it back in, yikes, 86 or so, in Hahvahd Squayah, at a little joint called "Regattabar". Also saw him on the Boston Common Summer concert with Miles Davis in the mid 80s. But sister you are doing such honor to these tunes, taking them to new places. I admire you greatly!
You do a very nice Dave Weckl. You inspired me to buy a FGDP 50. Six months wait time in Japan no less. Three months to go. I saw Mike Stern with Dennis a few weeks ago in Tokyo. The fire burns low. These days he's best playing very quietly, even more so than this. I found it touching. It took me a while to get used to this approach but now I'm totally digging it.
3:23 I was going NOOOOO, don't play "guitar" licks! haha Wow, I actually recognize this tune which is wild because I am totally not into jazz but I do remember hearing this played by someone before. Can't recall who. Might have been Chick Corea or Shawn Lane or MIke Stern. Not sure. really cool solo stuff. That melody is so odd hitting on the 4 every time just before the downbeat or however you want to subdivide the time. Really love that fake steel string stuff! That is so cool. You should throw that in every solo! heheh It's so atypical of electric guitar except it has been done by many and some use that string bender thing and some just use fingers but you really make it sound interesting and the tapping is what opens up bends that would be pretty much impossible just bending the notes you pick normally, I think. ANyway, nice stuff!!
There's a couple live performances of this by Shawn on youtube! He does shred a bit much (I would have preferred some stranger bebop lines over this tune) but it sounds great anyway
Danny Gatton is why I own so many different tele pups. But I did not hear that style first time thru at all. Not like I was looking for it. I don't look for shit, but it is welcome to stab me in the eyeball if it can. This is good Tory. I would not put it up against anything style wise personally myself. Influence is it's own monster. I guess when you chord pluck it shows, but I love that so much. Dabbling on the strings with whatever fingers. Yeah, just count me in.
@@TorySlusherSo true. Lots of tele players out there, but the very first that comes to mind is always Gatton without exception. The ear training stuff I think is.... just keep doing it over and over again until you know the intervals and different chords just by hearing it on the fingerboard, just an experience thing I think
My mind has been boggled. Insanely cool playing.
