    My Grandad drove the team, my Dad loaded the wagon. Your man on the wagon is in need of training. Grandad drove the team with only a walking stick, and nary a word and a nudge gee and haw, no whip. I was too young to appreciate the skill. Mom drove the old Rockne to pull the rope for the hay forks in the barn. Wish I had that car now. All the kids in the car so she knew where we were. Memories. ❤️

    Tough work, you can tell by the arms on the man on the trailer that he hasn't done so much fork work. The older men had forearms that would put Popeye to shame.

    Treat your animals with respect and love and dignity and they will do the work well.

      +clydo1946 This over processing the hey make it loose . When you leave the grass to dry and pic up yourself the hey is coming together like a fabric and then is easy to shape a load .

    This is a reply to TheBadger1967, below (too late to tag his question). The far ox (the one on the right), is not pulling as strongly, or as quickly, as the near ox, so the yoke of oxen is constantly shifting to the right. The driver is using the command Haw to correct this shift in order to keep the yoke and their load on the straight. When the driver actually wants to turn to the right, he stops using Haw, and sometimes you can hear him say Gee, but not everytime. I think the yoke of oxen needs extra training so that they are not being corrected every step, and maybe a yoke adjustment to give more power to the ox on the right. Still, some yokes are always mismatched in pace and this is how the yoke and the handler have come to grips with it. As I said, I would choose differently, as in more training and equipment adjustment.

      @DeniseSkidmore 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +keepdancingmaria Switching sides could correct this, but they would need to be retrained.

    • @DeniseSkidmore
      @DeniseSkidmore 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +keepdancingmaria Another potential solution is an offset hitch point in the yoke, so the weaker animal has more mechanical advantage.

    • @keepdancingmaria
      @keepdancingmaria 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Denise Skidmore Yes, I suggested that above:) More training and yoke adjustment. Oxen rock when they are well trained, don't they?

    • @keepdancingmaria
      @keepdancingmaria 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Denise Skidmore Part of the confusion may be that I am using the word yoke to designate both the piece of equipment on the oxen's necks, AND the pair of oxen themselves. Both of which are perfectly correct as technically you don't have a team until you have 4 oxen, two yokes working together. Correct, but sometimes can be confusing. An adjustment to the pivot point to give more leverage to the lagging animal was exactly what I meant by a yoke adjustment. You have made that clearer than I.

    • @DeniseSkidmore
      @DeniseSkidmore 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +keepdancingmaria I was just noting that physical training alone may not make up for the issue if one ox is just genetically stronger than the other. Without knowing the team I can't say if the weak ox is incapable or lazy.

    I totally like the invention of the hay machine.Awesome invention.Wouldn’t it be nice if the treadmill did some steady movement every time the Oxen took a step.Then the (Wagon)or object would move at the rate the Oxen is moving.Idk.Just imagining that there is a platform for Oxen to be more efficient.And eventually not putting a weight behind their head with their harness.Every farmer put’s a heavy harness on their Oxen.But,that’s just my opinion.

    • @DeniseSkidmore
      @DeniseSkidmore 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Candide Thirtythree Sides make the wagon heavier, a skilled stacker doesn't need them. The guy in the video must still be learning, or has not had a mentor to teach him. Also the hay is coming up very fast for careful stacking and it's usually a job for 2 men.

    Can anyone identify this hay loader? Is it a Sandwich-New Idea Easy-Way (I think so)? If so, number 3? Could be Cockshutt or Co-Op? Width of ridges on bed/deck looks like S-NI.

  • @georgegoertzen4723
    @georgegoertzen4723 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Give that poor load builder a break! First off, your oxen are of dairy decent with great long legs on them and second, they are walking at such a pace as if to be first in line going into the milking parlor.

    • @westernranchers
      @westernranchers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which breed of oxen they should have used?

    • @georgegoertzen4723
      @georgegoertzen4723 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not of the opinion that they've used the wrong breed of 'oxen, only that they are so fast, the lone fellow building the load is working his backside off, trying to keep up! The bovines in the video appear to be descendant from Guernsey. I'm not willing to put money on that but, that's what they look like to me. They are long of leg as more dairy breeds are, compared to beef, which tend to be shorter in the leg and they are using that length of stride to really pile the hay onto that wagon. Having had the responsibility of building the load on the hay wagon in my junior years, I've been in that guy's place and I can really empathize with his struggle to keep up and not screw up in the process!
