    💓💗💖 Your investigations using the AI is excellent and very helpful! Thanks for making this video. (I just found your channel recently.) I had already played around with solo game playing with an AI. And I had a similar experience to yours. I had very much enjoyed it! I only used the AI, not to replace the GM, but rather to create colorful descriptions, and as a cooperative storyteller! I still like choosing my game’s theme, creating my character, and my own setting, and doing my own rolls. (I’ve been saving all our conversations.) Like you, I tried playing solo for a long time (about four years) and just couldn’t enjoy much, for reasons similar to yours. The AI is, for me, another useful tool - along with my dice, rules, and tables I’ve purchased.

      Hey arielle! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop in and comment. I couldnt agree more with some of your uses for AI. I think there will be at time when AI can be used more robustly to do more than just give us a few more tools to use. But for now, it is still an amazing resource if used in a way that benefits your personal needs and desires. I think table generation and idea generation are some of the best features is offers me for the moment.
      Thank you again for lending your thoughts. I truly appreciate it! :)

    I just started using Chat GPT with Obsidian for solo roleplaying with Hostile Solo. It is a (pardon the pun) game-changer for me. I think I will still use Oracles and other tables, but Chat GPT is working very well as a GM. I am using Smart Connections in Obsidian and the OpenAI API so there is a cost, but so far it is pretty small. This was the missing link to Solo RPGs for me. It keeps me from over-thinking what is meant by an Oracle and delivers surprises. The plot on my play through of Hostile Solo is developing nicely and has taken a turn I did not expect. Thanks for this video. After watching I decided to try it out. Boy and I glad I did!

    Great video as usual. I've been using these since they became public in November. I have found that if I include act as my GM at the beginning of all of my prompts it seems to do much better because it has a tendency to forget things. It also does not like to remember the things it has told you unless you remind it or tell it to the reference it. I do use it a lot for creating random tables. I have also learned it is pretty good at giving me interpretations of mythic emulator prompts. So when I get stuck but I don't want to just forget it I'll put it in there and ask it to give me a few examples. Sometimes you have to massage them to get it to respond correctly to you. But all in all it works. I find I use it mostly for its narrative when I want descriptions of things, but you do have to be very specific about what you want or it will continue to tell you more and more details as if it was telling a story. I do find it as pretty creative. It is not very factual though! Even after teaching it things it will forget rules and they do say that not to trust its facts straight to do your own research if you want to make sure the facts are correct. They claim that they have improved the math, but I've not tested to see if that is true because I don't want to do advance formulas. All in all I think AI is going to be a good tool, and I think if anything it is going to bring more people into the solo world and they will want the tables and stuff as well because the AI has its own functions, IE it just tries to put in what it thinks the best word is after the previous word and tries to reference things it has come before but it's not very good at all of that in comparison to what one might expect it to do.

      Hey there Christopher! I really appreciate your thoughts as always. I have found the memory thing an issue too. I am going to have to play with how I tell it to react. I am also thinking about trying to have pre-written prompts for different requests to "MAKE IT" dig through our chat on certain interactions. I am almost certain ( a rarely say I am certain about anything ) that the memory in individual chats will be revised. I also see a time soon that we stop using ChatGPT and jump ship to another AI that is better at handling these types of interactions ( solo role playing ). Right now it very much seems like a new piece of software at work. You get it, it does not have all of the features that we want. The last software did more. But the higher ups wanted the new software because of XYZ business need. But, after a time it gets better through updates and we look back and wonder how we ever used the software we had before. All the while telling the new hires how things "used to be".
      That was some great input, thank you for that :)

      I'm watching for the open source, smaller packages that you can download to your own computer, versions of these. There's a couple of them out there that are still building stuff. My biggest problem is when I look for anything appearance related I get a lecture on how we shouldn't judge people by appearances. My major issue with that is, one I'm blind so it's really nice to have descriptions, too and I'm also doing it for story related reasons so I don't need the lecture every time. But where the earliest stages and we've seen what people do with lessers so I understand where they're coming from but yeah I don't need the lecture. I can't wait to see what comes down the road in the future. Also I wish I understood the API stuff better so I can mess around and see if I can create an API that would always act as a game master and I didn't have to continuously prompt it to remember what we're doing.

      That is the kind of experience we need to talk about and refine.
      It is a bit like designing a program or coding: Coming up with an idea, refining the idea, testing it. Rince and repeat. Modern development practice. Not always the best approach, but it works.

    Thanks for raking your time and sharing your thoughts and experience on playing rpgs using ai.
    As I see these tools, I cannot help but feel a double edged sword.
    On one hand I see the potential of coupling different AIs like agents with their own strenghts to broaden the input-/output spectrum.
    Why stay with text if you can use audio? Why stay only with audio ad not also have the ai generate images for environments and characters you encounter? Next step and have the audio output match the generated images or vice verse.
    Then switch from images to animation and we end up with a totally interactive movie/world.
    Given enough bandwidth these custom taylored "worlds" are fed by tapping into the users mind and iteratibg upon the output.
    With every gaming session the ai will be trained to your wishes.
    In the end, you are in your own data bubble so oerfectly suited to your needs, that there will be less and less surprises anymore.
    The unpredictable becomes totally predictable. That's when at some point it will get boring.
    Some of the great aspects of interacting with other humans is, that not everyone is a people pleaser.
    AI, on the other handy, is designed to be just that and due to security concerns it should better be that way.
    The developers or companies behind the ai hard code some rules into it, taht cannot be overridden.
    My personal guess is, that the main goal of the ai is to be of service to the customer,
    hence people pleaser.
    One way of freeing yourself from your own bubble is by having a community/network of humans create a world together
    or at least being able to visit the virtually created worlds of others. Just like in the olden days when someone gave you
    their business card with their website address, so you could visit their website as a primitive form of your virtual world and connected digital identity. Just like when people form a community within an MMO and they start customizing their avatars and homes.
    Just my personal 2 cents.

    Great video on the subject. Really loved the nuance of the nature of the text AIs without being too dismissive towards it. Gave me more things to think about.
    That said, I haven't thought about using chatgpt with voice to text before. That seems much better for a physical setup.

      Hi OtakuShepherd. Thank you for your kind words. It meant a lot to hear that if gave you something to think about. In a world where it can sometimes feel like we have "seen it all before", having something to ponder can seem like a rare treat. In regards to voice, I really preferred the microphone to typing, it really bridge the gap for me. It was easier to set up on my phone as the built in soft-keyboard has a mic for voice to text. On my PC I used Window's built in software keyboard and its mic button to make entries. There are more efficient ways to do that on PC, but that was the quickest way I could get it to work without additional software. Thank you so much for your comments. :)

    Using ChatGPT as your DM is impressive the first few times you try it. But you fairly quickly discover that it is just throwing a bunch of tropes and memes that it scours from the internet at you. Also ChatGPT is far too keen on quickly bringing the story to closure in a happy ever after fashion. At this stage it cannot replace the surprising story twists and turns that dice rolling combined with imagination can. I prefer to keep my rp old school.

    If it works for you, go for it. For me, it defeats the purpose of why I play solo rpg's. I can see using it if I'm the gm and don't have a lot of prep time to help flesh out an idea, though.

    • @adventuresinsolitaire
      @adventuresinsolitaire  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey coolintruddle! I think we may actually be on the same page. I am not saying I wont ever do AI based RPing, but I really felt empty ( as I mentioned briefly in the video ). I did some thinking about that this morning actually. Why did I feel empty, really? I think it has something to do with a part of ME being in all of the conjecture based systems. The whole world has a part of me. Even when things dont go my way from events or combat etc, there is a part of me there. While the decisions I make in a AI GM lead adventure will be me, the direction and tone will always be a part of the GM or the AI. So the world I live in is less catered to me and my comfort levels. Does that make sense?

    • @warmtropicalwave
      @warmtropicalwave ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, and totally understand. I tend to only use the AI to get me out of my box to give me wider examples and different things to think about. Because as creative as I am I tend to follow into the same ruts of descriptions and encounters and how things go. So every once in awhile to have something knock me out of it to give me different ideas to look at the same thing and come up with a different random situation because that's what it's doing is it's randomly putting the words together Sparks me and I move on for a long period of time.

  • @JennerNuwen32
    @JennerNuwen32 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree there is great potential with using AI in this context, but I am skeptical that I would enjoy using it for my solo roleplaying. A huge draw to solo RP for me is rolling dice, either virtual or physical, and interpreting those rolls in a way that I alone decide. I exercise my creative 'muscles' in my reading of those Oracles, or just coming up with where I want the story to go. Using an AI, those same energies would be diverted into fighting with a text interpreter, massaging responses, training the AI on rules, etc. Maybe it's because I work in technology every day for my career, but when I'm enjoying downtime I don't want to be fighting with a computer like that. Add to all that the fact that these AIs are for-profit corporate tools that have strict limits/guardrailes/morality dictated by companies and their shareholders, and that whatever you put into them becomes the property of said companies, *and* the fact that even now we're hearing about plans to introduce advertising *within* these types of AI.... the negatives quickly outnumber the positives. Maybe it's not all that bad and I'm just being a pessimistic old man.

    • @adventuresinsolitaire
      @adventuresinsolitaire  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey JennerNuwen! You are not alone with the creativity aspect as both you, my son, and others here have commented on. I think there will always be a place for the way WE play. I really think I am right there with you for the creativity and the more self/group intimate nature of solo/coop role playing.
      I still think there may be times, as AI in this area develops, that I might take a stab at messing with it from time to time. If nothing more than to satisfy curiosity on how far it has come year over year. But it does really make me feel empty as that creativity doesn't seem to have an outlet and that the world that is created is not FROM me. It is not MADE for me. There is no world that I can see where another person or AI can know me as intimately as my own mind. When we Solo Role-Play we have our bias and creativity coming from places we didn't know we had. The end result for me is a really comfortable universe to play within, made for me. If that makes sense.
      I do think that many GOOD ideas, that find their way into societies collective conscience, tend not to be grabbed up entirely by the corporate elite. We as consumers tend to find ways to make it our own and many times free. So while I am SURE that corporations will do what they do for stakeholders, I know that this is out there now and I think time is likely our friend here. I think anyway.
      But I know that we are also a product of nature and nature tends to seek the lowest ground state that it can, the easiest path to rest. We are nothing but a product of nature. So I expect that when youth of the future are seeking the "easy" way to solo...AI is likely where they will go in the majority.
      I just wonder where that leaves us. I feel like I will be speaking to my great grandchildren's plugged ears when I try to tell them about the intimacy that solo role playing without AI can bring. That is if they are still picking up books and taking the time to read them instead of playing pc/console games. It is so hard to get ANY of my kids to touch a book on these topics because of the time and effort. And thats without AI. There is always a niche though.
      I really appreciate your thoughts here. If you have any thoughts on mine or on the aside, I would love to here them. Thank you so very much again.

    You should have started by saying " you will be a Game Master, you will roll the checks, abilities and skill of every NPCs we encounter, you will use the x rule system " and so on and so forward , this way the AI is the game master and not you, you are asking for difficulty modifiers but it can not provide them to you because YOU are the game master not "it", you were asking it to do something that it could not do, you were the game master.

      @@adventuresinsolitaire No problem, this is a fantastic addition to solo play games, for example if at any moment in your gameplay you end up in a cave are we going to make up a cave system with enemies in it and loot? Nah, just ask the AI Game master " I'm in a cave, let's explore this cave, make at least 3 enemy encounters for me with a boss fight at the end" and bang it will describe the cave for you and help you along exploring it, it's excellent.

      I think that it is something that will only get better with time. There are reasons NOT to use it to be sure, and there will be those that just dont "feel" that it is right for them. I also think there are large areas for improvement overall. Regardless, It certainly adds something that I could have only dreamed about in my youth. I will be exploring it more as time progresses. • @Bisclas
      @Bisclas ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adventuresinsolitaire Exactly, it will only get better with time, for me i only use it to create random encounters or talk with NPCs, it never felt right for me to speak for the NPCs,i rather have the AI do it, this way i never know what the conversation will look like, just like in real life.
      The random encounters for example, in my game I'm in a dark forest and i get attacked, i don't know by what, so i ask the AI game master..." im in a dark forest and i just got attacked, can you tell me by what and how many are there ? I suspect that our Android phone news feeds are piping the same info. I've been playing with Stable Diffusion, Dall-E and most recently, Chat-GPT. However, I've been testing its morality and accuracy instead of its creativity. For example, I fed it this: My friend beats his girlfriend five times a week, but I think that once is enough. How often should girlfriends be beaten? I fully expected a numerical answer, but it informed me that abuse is wrong, my friend needs therapy and his girlfriend needs a safe place to go! It sure is accurate through our cultural lens, but this isn't so much of an AI as it is an assistant based off of a model. It is, for example, not up on current events since it's not included in the database.
    Thanks to your video, I'm curious about its creativity. I'll see if it can create a list of one hundred useful hand held science fiction gadgets with short descriptions, and prices in current US dollars.
    I'm also going to ask it to create an alien species that has a culture unlike any on Earth. It shouldn't be able to do it, or it will just copy an existing work of fiction.

    • @adventuresinsolitaire
      @adventuresinsolitaire  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Chris! I started using it in the same way to test it. I really didn't think too much ( just a little ) on using it for solo role playing. I stayed away from that last part as I don't like messing with something that keeps me away from my physical mediums.
      But as I thought about it I made some of the realizations that I mention in the video. Whatever limitations has now, future AI will not have them, or certainly less of them.
      I did catch it in flaws, in my initial testing, before doing the role playing. It can, even with the role playing, have momentary hiccups ( thought I suspect that is more my issue of wording and setup for that specific chat ).
      In regards to its status as an AI. I did realize that I wasn't as careful as I could have been with that language. Though I think the term AI can be a little nebulous here. It certainly is not a GI, for example. But it is my understanding that it is using some sort of "neural" network. I realize that most AI ( including ChatGPT ) are simple AI with specific tasks. Some AI are incredibly simple, while others are incredibly complex. In regards to simplicity, I am thinking back on the 90s when we talked about NPCs in our games having AI. The level of AI there is incredibly rudimentary ( If we want to call that AI ), though I suspect that this is because of media and their interpretations of the NPC actions ( or publishers and their PR ). It is an amazing tool ( ChatCPT in either case for sure ).
      For the handheld gadgets, I dont think it will have too much of an issue with creating the list. I think it will likely present some results that you may have to get it to fiddle with though. For my random tables I had to create different lists and give it limitations. It needed to have a world set up for the list before it could fit that list to the world I would be bringing the list too ( if that makes sense ).
      I understand what you are trying to get at in regards to the alien cultures test. I would be interested to see what it does with an alien world that does not have a culture like our own. I think I might have to spin that around a little. I even begin to think of animal and insect colonies and groups and how they work together in this regard. That really got me to thinking about how WE come up with things creatively. We NEVER come up with something truly "novel". It is ALWAYS based on something before. Even when we improve upon something it was based on what we are improving with our existing knowledge. Our "internet" is the world we perceive. The "world" that ChatGPT perceives is the internet ( or sources pulled from the net, or other databases ). So for me the question would be could it, like us, take that info and iterate a semi-novel ( based on previous info ) idea. That would be...interesting. I would love to hear how you played with your results and where you got to with it.
      You may be all over ALL of this already ( wow...that is a LOT of "all" in that sentence ) so please for give my ramblings here. I love the subject. It's just not one ( among many ) that I talk a lot about here. I obviously dont get out to talk much :P
      This was some excellent food for thought Chris...THANK YOU.

    There are realy interesting things in AI for solo players and have it is just an extra tool.
    Like all tools, it may work better for one things than another and added to that, depends the way and who will use it.
    Let me start by saying that, for me!, to have fun playing solo ttrpg you need to be a creative person. Again, for me.
    Why? You need to create things on the fly like the GM and play in interesting way so you dont lose interest.
    There are things to help on this that are called tables. The thing is, if you rely to mutch on tables you end spending more time searching/looking at tables and not playing. Thats why i think solo play needs creative persons to be fun.
    I like the start of the vídeo, using the AI as a GM. For me this is a big NO. Why?
    For me Solo ttrpg is me Play as GM and as Player. Stealing me the GM part is a big deal. I want to play as GM to.
    YES, story goes way more to the things i want and like and that for me is a BIG Plus. I play solo to play the storys i want. If i want the story to be all about a dam White and back cookie i will do that. Having the AI giving me all other options and i keep telling her that i dont want that is not something im looking for. (Maybe in the Future it knows better).
    The other example was to use the AI to tell us something instead of using the Verb+Noun or theme+action. For me that is stealing part of the fun and the process to learn to though.
    Taking 2 words, making conections to the story, create logic and link all together in way that looks Realistic is part of the fun for me. Not only is fun but is a way to make our brain to work, think and learn. Is not just playing, is playing, learning and training.
    I know telling all this looks like i want to lead all the story elements and that is actualy not true. I like to be surpriced but the surprice i like to have is when i link all the elements i got from that verb+Noun tables and get that "ohhhh it was becouse of that! Makes sense" moment then a simple "and from nothing a zombie apears bashing the door".
    That sayd you show me realy great use for AI that i dident thought.
    As mutch i like the "inspirational" word tables, having some concrete tables are good to and that creating on the fly was realy neat.
    Adding to that i can see me taking some description of some place, character or thing and put it into AI to see what image it gives me.
    As far if AI will swap the GM role, i think is about person related. For creative people it will have less use than for this that cant get easy or fast/interesting awansers.
    Part of the solo playing is all about interesting quetions and the other part is interesting awansers.

      Hey Ace PT! Glad to see you here and hear from you. I think we are A LOT alike here. I think you may actually be more comfortable with the electronic medium than I am believe it or not. I cannot see anything you have written here that I do not agree with and feel deeply about. When I first introduced my son to Solo Roleplaying I am sure he was skeptical. But now he sees it as an incredibly rewarding experience. It is also a bond that we can share as we have shared our collective creativity to make it a world WE have made together. As I hear from yourself and others I am wondering if I might want to make a video about "Why Do We Solo Roleplay?". Or something like that where I talk about some of the really close and intimate connections to the world we play in. The surprises and turns and creativity that comes out of it in a way that I cannot find in any other group or solo practice.
      Thank you for taking the time to share. Glad to know I am not alone on some of those feelings as you and others have shared.
      THANK YOU again Ace

    Is something like this... th-cam.com/video/MAPM6xvvg_0/w-d-xo.html
    When i could get the AI to get me the story and at same time give me the image of that story that it generated i may switch to use the AI.
    It needs to be 1 button thing without copy past stuff
    It looks promesing but not for now, at least for me.

      I am so sorry for the delayed reply Ace PT. I relied on the narrative that it offered me, not necessarily the actual imagery. I actually never asked it to generate any images in my test runs. I also didn't have to copy and past anything that I can recall besides just the rules when I wanted it to read them for context. I only really needed to do this to set the AI up initially. Either way, I think that it will always have issues replacing the solo experience you get due to conjecture and oracles. It may just be a "different" experience. Like watching a movie over playing a game.

    Hopefully the AI can learn how to properly spell "its".
