SR 388 I just saw and I have to ask why??? Wouldn't it be better to give people something to hold them over till next year then put them out at the same time and have nobody even touch it because they're busy with Doom Eternal?
One thing this game had- atmosphere. It really feels like you’re in real danger and something is out to get you at every corner. You always felt a little uneasy while wandering the stages. That was the best part of the game for me.
Interesting looking sequel and I can see why you call it the real Doom 3, sure it's jank in a few places but I love the look of how experimental it is. Gonna be an experience to see the Doom 3 video
Super Shotguns lack of reload animation was due to the limitations of the storage in the original cartridge space. They made some cuts like that and the animatiom for the pump action shotgun as well as two different sprites for the zombie soldiers. Thats all
Same thing with Quake 1's super shotty. Fans just went ahead and agreed they were lever actions (even if they aren't). The folks that made Arcane Dimensions for Quake 1 even made a pickup model for the double barreled with the lever mechanism.
Good video! This game is probably my favorite Doom game because it feels like an evolution of the formula. Sure some enemies are missing, but the ones that are there more than make up for it. It's a game that genuinely scares me, while still maintaining what made Doom Doom. Also really liked the...the....SIDE QUEST...involving the secret level keys.
This DOOM was (and still is) great, and re-visiting this game twice in the last two days (in my N64 for old times sake and on my Ps4 because I was curious about the Lost Levels and how they tied the game to DOOM 2016 and Eternal) and I had a tear of joy after I completed the Lost Levels because the experience was enjoyable and awesome just like in 1997 (plus, it doesn't help that it was the 1st DOOM game I played and for that reason alone, DOOM 64 has a very special place for me, AND that also it marked my childhood days of gaming when it comes to FPS games, and as a final note, that song at the endings of the game back when my bros and I completed the game... mostly I, the song made us feel badass ourselfs after so many hardships and getting all the stuff payed off... especially because we did it on "Watch me Die!!!").
Same! I got this with Doom Eternal, and actually enjoyed it more “really was not a huge fan of eternal, prefer 2016”! I still play it on and off a couple of times a month on average. I also had the original Doom 64 as a kid but remember it scared me too much to ever beat it back then lol
I just recently beat Doom 64 but when you started shooting the faces at 3:46 I started sweating because of the jump scare with the Hell Knights that happens after you try and leave the room, this game really is one of my favorites from the Doom series
Sure, the super shotgun got the short end of the stick, but the chaingun though? That thing looks and sounds sick as hell in this game! It's a huge improvement over the original one if you ask me.
The order in which you blow the barrels up doesn't matter, the secret will still open regardless. It's just best to save the first one otherwise you won't reach the door
For those who don't know, the powerups in Hectic can be picked up. If you turn off autorun and slowly edge yourself to the bottom left corner of the supercharge trap, the trap will activate, and because of the limitations of the N64 cartridge, only one script can be run at a time, so you can grab everything and leave before the trap stops.
Playing Doom 64 on Switch is a blast - I've been going through it in handheld and there are times I legitimately jump out of my seat, console in hand, astonished by the jump-scares and ominous ambience. Definitely would recommend considering it's often on sale for *checks eshop* cheaper than dirt, and it's interesting to learn that the sequel to Doom 2 was once 64 exclusive.
How to open the cage in the level before last (No Escape)... Take the teleporter located in the cavern in the red radiation pit. This takes you inside of a fortress-like area. Head for the open balcony area in the fortress and look to the right. You will see a switch set on top of a cutout. Strafe jump onto the cutout and activate the switch. This opens a wall that leads to the back section of said cutout where another switch is placed. Jump off the cutout and head for the cavern in the red radiation pit again to go back to the fortress area. Enter the back of the cutout through said open wall and activate said switch. This switch opens the cage housing the cyberdemons which you must slay to end the map. The switch on the outside that you need to elevate yourself to reach only lowers the pillar which has the rocket launcher perched on top of it. To reach it, there are four outside elevators in between the main elevators. The one closest to the rocket launcher pillar will raise you high enough to jump on to the platform to activate the switch.
I will say that while the SSG looks and was animated more simplistic (likely cartridge space limitations), it does fire much faster and imo is a fair upgrade from the Doom II counterpart Besides Quake's SSG is almost similar animation wise
To me Doom 64's aesthetic and level design always felt more like a Quake 0.5 than a Doom sequel and I say that as a good thing. It's not my favorite, but it is pretty cool.

They changed the end writing in the re-release. They changed it from him staying in hell forever to him "going down the path of perpetual torment." Which brings the game in line with Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.
DOOM 64 was the 1st DOOM game I played back when it was released and my personal favorite (I didn't have much knowledge of the series on those days, but I didn't have troubles to figure out that it was a sequel to DOOM 2) and this couple of days I revisited the game on both my N64 and Ps4 and oh man, now I think I should give it a serious go to DOOM 2016 as I have only played it for a few minutes.

I played this one recently, I thought it was a nice surprise. Quite different from Doom 1&2, with a darker atmosphere and slower pace, but I appreciate it for what it is.
I think you hit the nail on the head when calling it droning. I tried to get into it but the music and having to back track so much and getting lost hunting for the switch or darkly lit door that I missed got old. Plus I managed to accidentally fuck up my saves and ruin my save, I also really like that Doom 64 essentially became Doom 3 and then leads into Doom (4) 2016 and Eternal
I'm gonna save the expansions for Doom 3 for a separate video, alongside the BFG edition. I was going to have them as a single video, but the Doom 3 video is already crazy long at the moment that I decided I'm gonna save it for later.
Pain elementals are undead cacodemons, which is pretty interesting, not sure why they have hair though. As for the super shotgun, the reloading animation was left out due to limitations in cartridge space, some people have made their own iteration of a reload animation for source port mods such as Brutal Doom 64. The cartridge limitation is also the reason why the regular shotgun has no cocking animation. In addition for the re-release they added more levels to the game which i think you should check out, should you have the time or interest.
I got to play the re release because it was that game I’ve always wanted to play but couldn’t. Such an amazing and eye candy experience with moments of frustration at times. Great video!
I would love a doom 2016 prequel that are the events of when doomguy stayed in hell after 64, especially with the plot points like the maykrs and sentinels with eternal
My favorite DOOM game for sure. The change in music set a new tone to the atmosphere where the sounds of the environment, monsters etc. stood out and made it 10x better. While the original DOOM was more Rock n' Roll, DOOM 64 was pure horror shit your pants!
heard it was secretely the best doom game... picked it up for 3 bux last week... havent been able to put it down... my god, its so awesome and as a teen who had an N64 how did I miss the beaut of a game lol
I was like everyone else and thought it was a port …. And I still had doom 1&2 on pc so I just ignored it completely cuz of the N64 controller too…. Wow so glad I picked it up recently . Beat it in a weekend and loved every second of it !
Great video. This may actually be my favorite of the classic Doom games now that it’s on current consoles. It’s a great mix of Doom action with Quake mood.
Doom 64 is so good. I've played through it completely 3 times, each on a different platform. I originally beat it using Doom 64 EX, then Brutal Doom 64, then the PS4 rerelease. I tried the PC version, but its controls feel so off for some reason, weirdly floaty. Ive also attempted playing the N64 version, owned it at one point, but never got very far. The game does have some flaws though. You really start feeling the limited monster roster in the later levels, it turns into what feels like fighting a Baron around every corner. The levels also can have a lot of switch hunting and puzzle solving that isn't always clear how to solve. There are several levels you will be aimlessly wondering around because you didn't see the switch behind that random column in that one room, and even if you do it isn't always clear what it actually did. The N64 version is also insanely dark. Also, who ever designed the levels was definitely a fan of the "fortress surrounded by water" theme.
While doom 3 is a black sheep amongst the doom games, I do enjoy it, it's cheesy main bad guy dr Betruger is honestly hilarious to me Anyway dude nice vid, doom 64 is a classic, plus you remind me of civvie 11 mixed with Scott the woz with these doom vids lol
@@ThatTravGuy hey no problemo dude, mind if I suggest another shooter to try out? Unreal is one of my favourite games, it's atmosphere and weapons are amazing and blows quake 2 out the of the water lol
Unreal is a series I always missed out on - I've always wanted to see what I've been missing out on! It's on my radar, just probably won't get to a video on it for some time.
@@ThatTravGuy fair enough, unreal gold is the best version to get as it has the expansion campaign, you might need to get the fan patch for it called oldunreal. And unreal 1 is like the only game in the series to have a single player campaign, I don't count unreal 2 because it's nothing like the first game lol
Doom 64 is one of my favorite Doom games. Not only is it one of the first N64 games I played, it's also the game that got me into the Doom series in the first place.
If you are anyone ever feels like replaying through Doom 64, I would recommend playing with DOOM 64 Retribution, a port for GZDoom that keeps the game intact (except for adding more frames in all the right places, and yes, that includes the SSG) and adds DLC and all the nice features that come with GZDoom. It even features a gallery of sorts. Definitely makes revisiting D64 something to look for
Fun fact now that you've covered DOOM Eternal and TAG1&2 The DOOM 64 Lost Levels tells how the Doomguy got sent to Sentinel Prime (he killed the mother demon's sister causing a dimensional rift) and in DOOM Eternal you see how he becomes the DOOM Slayer (which you know ofc) So that's a fun little fact
At least we finally got the cut demons added back in with the Doom 64 CE mod, and no there not low effort or ripped from other games, you would mistake them for being in the original version if you didn't know better.
Lately I've been seeing a lot of Doom 64 videos lately. Back in the day, this was by far my favorite Doom game when it came out. I still play this game on the PC, and it's still as fun as it ever was. Doom 64 is different in that everything about the game is dark in nature. From the music, to the environments, to the enemy spawns, it's just a different Doom game altogether. Oddly enough, I've been wondering if anyone is considering remaking Doom 64 in the Doom Eternal environmental. I know Doom Eternal can be modded. To what extent, I don't know. Either way, I think it would be nice to see this classic remade in a modern engine.
The reason for the super shotgun being bad and not reloading is well it’s obvious the game was originally on the n64 and I don’t think you can modify the games weapons
I agree with you, this is definitely my DooM 3 and I always placed it in my version of the canonical timeline. But then again, where does Plutonia Experiment fit into the timeline?? If it is Canon. The actual Doom 3 is a spin-off with a brand new marine going through a demonic attack on Mars, while the real DooMGuY is still in HELL because of his DooM 64 quest in my opinion. That’s how I see things with the DooM timeline, and DooM Eternal explained a whole lot of the story and I love the inclusion of the Mykars and Night Sentinels. It opened up a whole lot of whole new characters and lifeforms throughout the entirety of the universe.
I believe Midway did initally pitch this AS Doom 3 during development, but it had to be N64 exclusive as Midway were part of the "Nintendo Dream Team" and were contracted to make a couple of exclusive games for the system, otherwise they'd have just ported the PS1/Saturn Doom over. But the other Midway N64 "dream team" exclusive was Wayne Gretsky's Hockey, one of the worst games on the console, so we kinda lucked out with Doom 64 :D
Doom 64 is really good. Like, really really good. It might arguably have the best maps of all the games. Fantastic music. Looks and plays very well. They took some nice liberties with the monsters. If you like Doom, you need to play it.
Interesting enough, some cut demons included a Hellhound and a female demon. Now what they would have look like is anyone guess. But with Doom 4(2016) and Eternal out and playing them, I think I can guess that the Summoner was based for the discarded female demon of Doom 64. And the Marauder's wolf is what the Hellhound might have been.
Im relatively new to doom I played a few missions of doom eternal and fell in love with the soundtrack and one day I seen that doom 64 a title I never seen was on Xbox and I didn’t think I’d like it but damn old doom just feels so good it’s a bit confusing but hey it’s the coolest game I’ve played in the past year and thanks to guys like you in the Community it drives me to want to play and finish the game and play other dooms before and after this title... thank you Conrad
Regarding rewards in secret levels, I always felt the level itself is the prize. If playing the game is rewarding, then getting to play one more level is reward enough. Secret levels that seamlessly blend in with the campaign, like Doom‘s E1M9 or Duke‘s E1L6, are my favourite kind. But secret levels are also an opportunity to try a gimmick or level concept that doesn‘t really blend in with the rest of the campaign. If you have a gimmick that might or might not be cool in your game, I‘d rather you put it in an optional level that can easily be bypassed, and hand the choice over to me. I love the Wolfenstein levels in Doom 2, so I always go through them. I don‘t like Spin Cycle in Duke 3D, so I just don‘t go there. Simple as that.
Doom 64 is a ton like Marathon 2: durandal. Switch hunting? Check! Massive maze-like levels? Check! Atmospheric focus? Definitely check! But Marathon 2 and 3 have no music at all, but i run the doom soundtrack in the background on TH-cam anyway.
I've heard somewhere that the super shotguns reload animation looked weird because of a lack of frames being used due to storage limitations
Huh, that would make sense! I never considered that.
its all because nintendo refuses to move from the stone age and use discs instead of cartridge
@@ThatTravGuy It's the same reason for the stripped back animations for the standard shotgun as well.

My favorite DOOM game for sure. The change in music set a new tone to the atmosphere where the sounds of the environment, monsters etc. stood out and made it 10x better. While the original DOOM was more Rock n' Roll, DOOM 64 was pure horror shit your pants!
Name a more iconic duo: TH-camrs and 15 hour premieres
The Hell Knight's & Baron's EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE gets me every time But the Mother Demon is just too hard, it's not even fun.
Idk if it’s luck but I stunlocked mother demon with the chain gun and took her down. Because her rockets are annoying so u need to stun lock her a lot
heard it was secretely the best doom game... picked it up for 3 bux last week... havent been able to put it down... my god, its so awesome and as a teen who had an N64 how did I miss the beaut of a game lol
My first time playing doom 64 I thought the imp at the end of level 1 was an archville
Holy shit, I can totally see that.
same lol
Doom 64 CE for all of Doom 2s enemies 😉 Luckily I played that for my first time experience for Doom 64
Love the DOOM content man! You really seem like a channel that could grow into something wonderful
That metal intro music made me sub 🤘
While doom 3 is a black sheep amongst the doom games, I do enjoy it, it's cheesy main bad guy dr Betruger is honestly hilarious to me
Anyway dude nice vid, doom 64 is a classic, plus you remind me of civvie 11 mixed with Scott the woz with these doom vids lol
Being compared to those two means a hell of a lot! Thanks for the kind words!
Civvie is DooM god
Doom 64 is one of my favorite Doom games. Not only is it one of the first N64 games I played, it's also the game that got me into the Doom series in the first place.
Hilarious.
Made me laugh multiple times.
Did that BFG just make a Godzilla roar?
"Everybody wants to be re released"
Bethesda and Microsoft: "Good day gentleman I am here to change the future"
I never really "got" Doom, maybe it's because I don't like FPS' very much, but this video was still really enjoyable to watch :)
This channel is underrated.
2:00 "but what's the big deal with doom 64 setting it apart from every other?"
he asks while the footage shows the ability to look up and down.
that's due to the fan pc port. Not the original game.
3:30 the face change when he says "now you can retire" priceless!!!
13:47 there wasn't enough space on the cartridge to animate the shotgun
I think GBA Doom 1 have reload animations
Because i ever played it
18:27 perfect seen for the "erggghhhh" sound when you first see the hell knight
If you are anyone ever feels like replaying through Doom 64, I would recommend playing with DOOM 64 Retribution, a port for GZDoom that keeps the game intact (except for adding more frames in all the right places, and yes, that includes the SSG) and adds DLC and all the nice features that come with GZDoom. It even features a gallery of sorts. Definitely makes revisiting D64 something to look for
Fun fact now that you've covered DOOM Eternal and TAG1&2
The DOOM 64 Lost Levels tells how the Doomguy got sent to Sentinel Prime (he killed the mother demon's sister causing a dimensional rift) and in DOOM Eternal you see how he becomes the DOOM Slayer (which you know ofc)
So that's a fun little fact
Doom 64 feels like that weird bit of ID where they were all dark and gloomy like quake, very cool
At least we finally got the cut demons added back in with the Doom 64 CE mod, and no there not low effort or ripped from other games, you would mistake them for being in the original version if you didn't know better.
Doom 64 CE is the best way to play Doom 64. You also get all the content from the re release and even more.
But I’m sure u know this already
"Soul for a soul I guess" 😂😂
Alot of the demons and weapon frames missing is due to lack of storage and is also why soldiers and shotgunners use the same sprite
DOOM is the best archetype we have for a hero. protecting earth from hell until death. very noble.
Okay but this isn't the end of the Doomguy story, No Rest For The Living takes place after Doom 64.
is doom 64 (1997) as great as doom 1 (1993), doom 2 (1994), doom 3 (2004), and doom 4 (2016)?
18:06 *laughs in doom eternal*
"such a good ending to the doom guys trilogy" Doom Eternal be like: no
Isn't DOOM (2016) the sequel to DOOM 64? Or am I missing something
@@gojirabh9383 all of doom 1,2 and 64 are the same doomguy as in 2016 and eternal
16:26 until doom eternal where we find out they are the same person
the pain elementals look like they'd be weird cacodemons, and the cacodemons in doom 64 for look like they'd be pain elementals.
In many ways Doom64 feels closer to Metroid Prime with it's ambient music and threatening atmosphere.
Trav Guy: I HATE switch hunting!
Me: Play Hexen.
Underrated creator
I've played this game so many times and i never knew what it was about lmao
Love how he takes the call on a 3DS at the beginning lmao
Doom 64 is a ton like Marathon 2: durandal. Switch hunting? Check! Massive maze-like levels? Check! Atmospheric focus? Definitely check! But Marathon 2 and 3 have no music at all, but i run the doom soundtrack in the background on TH-cam anyway.
