Lyatoshynsky's "Fantastic March" was composed in 1920, while he was working as a music composition teacher at the Kyiv Conservatory. During this early period of Lyatoshynsky's development as a composer, he drew inspiration from works by Tchaikovsky, Glière, Glazunov and Scriabin. Many young composers of the time similarly regarded Scriabin's experiments as a turning point in music.
The march is structured in ternary form. It opens with a brief but ominous introduction, before the march theme is softly introduced. It reaches a powerful climax as it is taken by full orchestra. After a diminuendo, a more lyrical second theme is presented, also growing into an expressive climax of Scriabinesque influence. The march theme is recapitulated but quickly is subdued. A slow and enigmatic coda ends the work. Despite being an early composition, the harmony, rich chromaticism and use of dissonance already remind us of the mature style of Lyatoshynsky.

Interesting listening. Along with the influences you noted, I hear a bit of Mussorgsky in places. Thanks for sharing, Sergio.
