I file a 45 degree bevel on the end of the string pegs. When I pull the string through the hole, this bevel will kick the ball to it's proper position. This is how I've been stringing guitars for 30 years. Exactly! Thanks for the post.

    • @davidkopec5587

Great video. Profession in every sense. Also remember to retune your guitar after the slightest truss rod adjustment as any neck movement would pull the strings flat or sharp.

The only thing I would add is to wash your hands before restringing because they'll have some of the linseed oil on them. I also always wash my hands every time before picking up my guitar. My strings last that much longer because there will be less build up of dirt and sweat on the strings.

This video is great. I rewatch just before changing the strings on each of my Taylors. One thing, though -- Rob stretches the strings just once in this video. I find that I have to stretch and retune 3-6 times before the strings stay reliably in tune. Does anyone else have the same experience?

Great video, loved the way he tuned up, so fast and no electronic tuners. My only criticism of this video would be, he made the truss rod adjustment seem so easy (because he's a pro) My advise would be leave it to people just like him. You can really mess a guitar up trying, and it'll never play the same again. I know, I've done it 😢

  • @douglasmcintyre3297

Thanks for an informative, non-advertisement presentation on guitar care, changing strings and truss rod adjustment, without the unnecessary verbiage so typical of many YT videos. Its true: an old dog really can learn new tricks. By the way, where can I get one of those string winders? I'll be sure to ask jolly old Saint Nick for one next December. :-)

@rockstar3224 Rob was using what looks like a Craftman (or similar) side cutter that squeezes the string from two sides. It creates a wedge shaped and sharp end, and can separate the windings from the core of the cable. I use a bicycle cable cutter (such as Spin Doctor, Shimano, Park Tool CN-10, cable cutters and others) that has a V-shaped notch in each side of the cutter. These squeeze the cable together as it cuts which produces a better result, especially on wound strings.

OK, next time I'll put the strings all into the bridge first. Not a big deal, but I can see that makes sense. I'm not sure about cut-before wind. I use Elixirs, too, but my Martin D19 is in the shop for a brace repair and I'm thinking I may try D'Adario phosphor bronze on it. Elixirs stay bright longer and are GREAT for guitars sitting in the show room, but I feel like I want to explore a bit. Tommy Emanuel reckons you need to change up now and then because the guitar "gets used" to a type of string. Doesn't sound like science, but Tommy is no amateur.
