    After re-stringing mine, I tune it, let it set for a day or so, check neck relief. A simple, slight adjustment of the truss rod can make a huge difference. I suspect this is often overlooked by many people.

    Important information, and a great vid as always, but… there’s no such thing as an ‘irreparable guitar’.
    In terms of cold/warm temperatures, I don’t know why but my house in the winter becomes more humid. My house will be 60+ in winter and 45 during summer. Cases are an important line of defence as well as a good quality dehumidifier (the Meaco 12 litre is fantastic for controlling humidity).

    The most
    Important advice 10:25 regarding humidity.
    My guitars go all over the world.
    Your shops environment should be as close to where the guitar will be going. This year so far. One was send to Brazil. Humid and warm.
    The previous guitar went to Baltimore. When I start a guitar, I set the temperature and humidity for the entire build.

    After playing guitar for some 53 years, is become quite simple. Keep moisture out, You must change strings from the store bought type of .015 High E string to a more comparable type I use Martin Marquis Silkensteel strings with High E at .011, Low E at .48 NOT the .56 as basic strings. I also keep two hand towels in my case to wipe my hands tween plays. With M M retuning is a simple High R and High B that only need a minor tune in. When I CHANGE strings.I have found a superb LOW RPM tiny red drill which I have affixed a small key winding unit to. to un wind and later rewind its only 5 sec per key.. it used to take me 1 hour to change strings now its 20 min !!!! ,Also I decided to use bird BONE for the key stop and the bridge at the holding edge.. PLASTIC does not vibrate with harmonics and vibrations. Bird bone does! peace

    From my experience, when the temperature is colder, it holds less moisture that is correct, but when transitioning from hot to cold in areas where day and night time temperature swings greatly, it will cause the extra moisture in the air in the warmer temperature to crash out, making the relative humidity at colder conditions extremely high.

    Haven't heard of this sort of problem with acoustic guitar before unless their exposed to extreme weather temperatures 37° to 100° degrees. Seems a waterproof insulated case or gig bag would be standard requirement. How do musicians handle outdoors concerts?

  • @RPMac
    @RPMac ปีที่แล้ว

    Not mentioned....but how you heat or cool your space is really relevant.....forced air heat, steam heat...air conditioners or swamp coolers....the game plan changes in considering how ,when and why your atmosphere needs tweeking....of course knowing your relative humidity is essential.....

    Almost had a heart attack when Daisy said she used steel wool to clean a fretboard - then I remembered this was acoustic not electric.
    Magnetic pickups and steel wool is not a good pairing.
    Many great little tips scattered all through this video and I really like the conversational format.

    • @mikeshaw4951
      @mikeshaw4951 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nothing wrong with steel wool. Cover the pickup with tape annd all fragments will land on the tape. When you finish put another piece of tape over the first piece and all metal bits will be contained. Then remove both pieces and toss.

    Oh but they are living things. I try and take very good care of all of my guitars. I always love the way you explain realism in how to care for your instrument. I own some high end Takamine, Martin, and Yairi acoustics and so far have never had any issues with them. Some day I hope to own a custom like you build. I really like your design and your work.

    I don't see humidity as much of a problem in the UK, but a few years ago we had a particularly dry summer and my telecaster (which was out on a stand) developed fret sprout as the neck shrank slightly. I put the guitar in its case on a shelf, with a small bowl of water soaked in kitchen roll and left it for a week or so, which solved the problem.
    Regarding strings, I have very dry skin and my strings last ages. I've just started using coated ones though, and I'm very impressed with their tone and feel. the most recent ones are Tanglewood "Fibreflex", which seem as good as Elixirs, at a much lower price.
    Boiled (not raw) linseed oil is good for fretboards but a small amount of 3-in-1 is ok too.
    One of the best acoustic guitar care jobs I've done recently is properly dressing and crowning the frets on a guitar where the first few had developed divots, and setting the nut slot depths. No need for specialist _luthier_ tools, but you do need to be a bit of a handyman, with feeler gauges, straight edges etc. If you're not handy, then take it to a professional as they should be able to restore the guitar to as good as new, or better.

    Please: what is the issue with lemon oil and maple fretboards.

    • @johngibson911
      @johngibson911 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lemon oil (or linseed oil if you prefer) is only needed on open-grained fingerboards (rosewood, pau ferro, ebony, Indian laurel etc). Maple fretboards usually have a finish applied to them (gloss or satin) which seals the grain so the oil wouldn’t be absorbed into the wood

    I live in California and I was visiting my friend who just bought a new custom acoustic guitar. He didn't have a case for it. At his house, we heard cracking coming from his bedroom. We walked into the bedroom and saw his guitar on the bed and cracking because the sun was shining on the guitar. His $3000 guitar ruined. We took that guitar in his car to the repair shop and dropped it off. $500 to get it fixed. He bought a case and a humidifier for it.

      An MOT is a Motor Ordinance Test, in the UK it is compulsory, once a year to have someone qualified check your car is safe and working properly, if it is over 3 years old.
      The only reason you can legally drive a car without an MOT is to drive it to/from an MOT test centre (most car mechanics garages can do this) to get its MOT done. If there are problems they have to be rectified before the MOT runs out, if you want to keep using the car.
