This was kind of strange. I usually love these taste tests but the disdain and snark they both showed for the concept of the food itself makes me question why they even tested it. They should have had someone who actually enjoyed turkey bacon or respected it at all on camera this time. It was entertaining, as usual, but also made me feel kind of icky.

I understand that due some individual's easily crushable egos our society has deemed it necessary to strive for full inclusion. However calling a product that neither tastes, looks, or is produced in a manner similar to the original it is imitating by the same name isn't fair to either product. By default Bacon is
      1. Belly meat
      2. Pork
      3. A Cured product
I feel anyone one who enjoys the product should do so as often as possible whether it is for dietary, religious, or ethical reasons. They can even have what ever share is intended for me. But it is not BACON.... how about Turkey based breakfast strips?

No. I disagree with all three of you. You dint have to love something to review it. The problem is the manufacturer set up the comparison by calling it “bacon.” It cannot ever be bacon because it’s the wrong animal. However, that is the gold standard for bacon. Even among bacon... some are better than others. So if all you wanted to know what is tolerable or even appreciated... the panel told you what they liked. The panel may not be as biased in their assessment.

It’s SO unfortunate that it was misinformation as we know now that pork fat isn’t the cause of heart disease.
What’s really sad is I recall us changing to use “mock” butters and those were full of hydrogenated oils which were the WORST for his heart disease.

Turkey Bacon needs to be overcooked to be decent. Let it foam up and then keep flipping for a minute or two until it *almost* starts to scorch, then pat dry with a paper towel. Added sugar is the enemy of okay turkey bacon.

Some people actually like turkey bacon, I do. Some people *CANNOT EAT PORK*, and kosher turkey bacon is an option they have. Some people *CANNOT AFFORD* pork bacon......when I was growing up, we were lucky when mom could buy us the cheapest turkey bacon, and we loved it.
    Shame.

I totally agree with the lady and do NOT really care for turkey bacon ... BUT I have tried SEVERAL different brands TRYING really hard to like it because too much pork isn't necessarily good for us. I have not ever seen any WELLSHIRE brand so I cannot compare that one but of all the other brands they tested I really do NOT care for ANY of them. The best brand that I HAVE tried is Sam's Choice. I wish that they had tried that one. If I absolutely HAD to eat turkey bacon ... THAT would be my choice. :)

There’s a lot of reasons someone might choose turkey bacon, from fat or sodium content to dietary restrictions to religious observance. And others may just enjoy it or it may be familiar because it’s what their family chose when they grew up. The food snobbery and disrespect makes one wonder why do the video at all. “I’d rather eat the plate,”… Oh, please! I’ve grown tired of these kinds of comments in America’s test videos.

First of all, I love ATK. Secondly, this review is unfair. If you don't like turkey bacon, you shouldn't do a turkey bacon review. I do like turkey bacon, and in fact, I have two packs of Butterball turkey bacon in my fridge right now because that's what was on sale at my local market. I've never heard of Wellshire turkey bacon.

Sometimes consumers in America can be so ignorant. They don't read the back labels where the ingredients and real nutritional info are. If they did, they'd understand that most turkey bacon is even less healthy than pig bacon. The ads and store sample ladies are misleading. Turkey bacon has more sodium and fat, and sugar too. It has to compensate for the missing texture, sugar, fat and flavor that real bacon has. So you might as well go back to pig bacon... though it's all unhealthy.
You should read "Salt, Sugar, Fat" by Moss, about how our food industry gets us hooked, and how they can't actuslly stop using the three ingredients because they're necessary to extend shelf life, keep things crispy and brown, mask industrial flavors, and also because of the competition: if you reduce fat and sodium but your competitors won't, then you'll lose consumers to them. And customers may complain thet the healthcare ear vwrsion doesn't taste as good. They all depend upon consumers not questining their claims, and not reading the labels and knowing what they're reading means. Don't pay attention to catchwords on the front label. Read the back labels for hard facts!

To approach turkey bacon as an emulation of bacon is to approach with the wrong premise.
    It’s something else that isn’t a vegetable.
Is it tasty on its own? It can be.
If bacon is what you want, turkey bacon won’t satisfy.
True the other direction, as well.
If a turkey sandwich is what you want, ham won’t do the trick.
I think ATK wasn’t adhering to their usual character in the production of this comparison.
It’s a reasonable, alternative product, that has a legitimate market for some defined reasons.
I hope they’d not do the same in a comparison of Oat Milks or Almond Milks and constantly measure them back to cow milk.

This is the only ATK taste test I've seen so far where the premise itself is so despised. I know there are people who are already on board with that, and also people who are disappointed by that, based primarily on food preferences and requirements. I'm just amused at the contrast, if we can suspend all of that other stuff for a second.

I do you remember the brand name of the one that's sold at Aldi which is good and I also like the other one that I have bought for years that I also don't remember the bread babe at Publix. The Butterball brand is definitely not one of my favorites but I don't find it hippie particularly bad.

If the presenters truely felt that bacon should only come from swine then they should have stated that in the beggining and ended the video early. It could have saved us all a lot of time. This review of an alternative to the clogged artery version of bacon was clearly not objective. This was a missed opportunity to educate the public on the pros and cons to traditional and more healthy versions of bacon.

  • @Thommadura

I think the problem here was that they were testing Turkey Bacon - and instead of comparing one Turkey Bacon to another - they attempted to compare it to Pork Bacon - which is a completely different product. Turkey Bacon has another disadvantage in that they deliberately make it lower fat - which is what makes Pork Bacon Flavorful and Crispy. About twice a year, we get on a Bacon kick for a couple of weeks in the house - and that is enough for about 6 months - so we are not big bacon eaters - I make my own Pork Sausage mix with (For Patties) ground pork and spices so I can control how much fat I like in it - and get the taste I want. Sometimes the sausages are way too fatty.
