HOW TO ROW AN EIGHT

- A few different request to talk about eight rowing specifically so today we approach it a little differently. A little more of a commentary video, let me know what you think in the comments below.
I really believe that an eights speed is generated mostly from the catch and a predominantly leg driven stroke. There are many different techniques out there and certainly many ways to skin a cat so I'd recommend experimenting with your boat to see what works best!
On the flip side, other people believe that an eight can be rowed from the back end. I do think this can be a good place to sync up but I think that is all it is, a place to be in sync. That is what is most important in bigger boats. The rowing can be all over the place but if all the athletes are doing the same think, this can vmcrwate huge speed gains!

Re: reason being together/ apart at different parts of the stroke, what would you say is the typical cause of the separation? Is it solely different stroke lengths? I.e us tall chaps (I myself am 6ft8) vs others that are say 6ft?

I like the format, IE you and or the lads talking to camera whilst walking, and the technical info. I'd be interested to know how many of your subscribers/viewers are real rowers contra how many are "ergers" like myself. If I Was at home in the UK I think it'd be fun to try actual rowing, but there's a huge threshold to overcome between being a "skinnyerger" and actually sitting in a boat with anyone else, never mind 7 others.

Nice little vid. What comes across - beyond what you talk about - is how you have understood various complexities of boat moving but are able to distill them down to the basics for a nice concise description on what you’re getting at, without complicating it with extraneous information. Good stuff 👍
I’m a fan of catch timing and agree, get the suspension straight away in an eight and suddenly it feels ridiculously light and easy.

Hey Cameron, great video. I'm stroke seat of an Australian schoolgirl 8. I'm having a lot of difficulty with feeling people rush me during the recovery. I am trying to create a good ratio and stay on rate, but it's hard with everyone doing their own thing. We are also placing at different times meaning our catches are all out of whack- and I agree with you, I think that is the most important part of the stroke. Any advice?
I think the best thing for your boat, it sounds like, is to sync up a bit more. I recommend talking to your coach for sure!
Your seven person should control this for you and give you time
At lower rating, the slight pause at the finish was very noticeable, particularly with the forward-looking shots. It disappears in the speed pieces. But that pause is very helpful for acquiring timing in big boats.

Walking and talking to camera very smooth; nice technical focus in the boat; and of course a shout out to the 3 seat - the ejector seat!

Hey mate, great video! In the paddling you guys are pausing at the finish - a controversial move as far as I’m aware. Everyone has an opinion on pausing, what’s your’s?
I wouldn't say we are pausing at the finish really. The backs may stay still but generally the blades are moving consistently. I think its whatever makes the boat go faster, pause or none!

Can really vary on conditions but for steady paddling around 1:40ish/500m

Thanks for sharing the video and appreciated watching y'alls technique. Y'all definitely compress more than I do at the catch and tend to have more body over at the catch; whereas y'all are more upright. Nice smooth rowing.

Thanks Eric! The wires are for boat telemetry, allowing us to have stats for each individual!

Cam do you have any opinions on where to put the inside hand on the grip? Is it advantageous to have it closer or farther away from your outside/pulling hand???
Some people argue where to put your hands but I think it is down to personal preference!

Great video format and content! Some coaches argue that the arm thats closer to the rigger should be extended and not bent, what’s your take on that?

Takes practice
takes time and focus! learning in a boat along with other novices can make it very hard to distinguish your genuine mistakes versus mistakes forced on you by the boat. you really have to grow alongside the crew.
