- Widford is a small deserted English village in Oxfordshire, England, situated near the town of Burford. While not as well-known as some of the larger towns in Oxfordshire, Widford has a rich history. Early occupation is evidenced by the remains of a Roman villa.
The Church of England parish church of St. Oswald stands on its own on site, and a small area of Roman mosaic was visible in its chancel.
Widford was a substantial village in the Middle Ages but today only the 16th-century manor house and a few other houses remain as it fell foul of the Black Death, a disease is known to have cast a fatal shadow over nearby Witney.

You’ve done an absolutely wonderful job of filming this beautiful and atmospheric place. St Oswald’s is built on the site of a possible Roman Villa or temple. In the 1970s either side the altar there were two holes where you could see parts of a mosaic floor. It’s been covered up for protection. The birdsong creates the perfect soundtrack.

I live out in the country. Years ago when I first arrived; across the road there was a field with a sizable hedgerow with many apple trees. I headed over to pick apples. I got a fright as there were milk cows in the lower field that saw me WITH THE WHITE BUCKET. Needless to say they came running! In a short time I was SURROUNDED by these beasts! I thought I was going to get trampled on but they didn’t but rather stopped several feet away in a circle to take me in. I managed to pick my apples and on the way out tossed a few for some cows for
not getting trampled
on. That was a thrill for a girl from the city. Funny memories
