Satchel is a tremendous guitar player!! One of the legit best ever, and doing it as a satirical band only makes it that much better. Steele Panther really nails the 80s sound.
Your videos consistently are so spot on in the review, and you've helped give me a whole other appreciation for performances and music in new ways. You've also inspired me to pick the guitar up again. Thanks for making so many great vids!
Brilliant Fil! I’ve seen Steel Panther on 3 occasions and they are sensational! And truly Satchel is the icing on the cake! Blessed with amazing technical ability his fretboard skills are incredible! Seeing Satchel live really showed just how much of a great guitarist he totally is!! Cheers Mario! 😎🤘👌
Satchel aka Russ Parish was the guitarist for Rov Halford's FIGHT. they also played in Vegas as a live karaoke band called Metal Shop every Monday night. I was on stage with them and sang Balls to the Wall from Accept at the Imperial. He's been a monster player for decades.
My youngest son introduced his genteel mom to Steel Panthers videos a few years ago. I was aghast, amazed, shocked, and entertained! Their talent is off the charts! The lyrics to their songs are...a bit risque? And some are down right dirty! In a lewd, comedic way.😲😁🤣
Saw this band so many times in Vegas that it's a blur, Satchel had the best "O" face, guy is a mix of comedian and guitarist and it's pretty glorious to witness their shows.
When speaking of his past bands, you didn't mention my favorite. Fight, was a Rob Halford fronted band that Russ played in for a short time. I saw them live in 1994. Into the pit is one of the best hard rock/ metal songs I know of. There's a vid here on YT from MTV unplugged that's killer. Rob was in his glory then. That whole album/CD was awesome. From here to Eternity was a ballad that has one of my all time favorite guitar solos in it. I think the album was called War of words or maybe just self titled "Fight" . ( I can't remember but definitely look into it. Great music) I think Russ only played on that 1 album then left the band. Edit "For all Eternity" not from here to Eternity. The MTV Unplugged vid is still up here. "It's Alright" was done acoustically but " Into the Pit was full electric and what a performance it was. Rob Halford was on fire as was Russ/Satchel and the whole band. Great energy and the sound was very good.
HOLY SH!T do those two songs rock (Into the Pit/War of Words), I can't think of many that compare (amplitude, skill, vibe, guts). Thank you sir. Just checked out your suggestions and although I knew about Fight back in the day I didn't pay attention. However, those two songs you recommended are handsdown some of the best metal ever. EVER. Better than JP for the scale. These songs could come out today and smoke what's out there now. WOW. And more a Satchel fan.
@@billpratt2274 they are a good part of why I am a Satchel fan. That line up of Fight was one of my favorite line ups ever. IMHO, on par with early VH . Something just meshed perfectly with all those guys. It's easy to see Halford really felt it too. He was truly unleashed there. I went to GIT in 93-94. (I believe Russ went there in the late 80s. ) There were bumper stickers around there n LA that said Russ Parish for President. I didn't know much of him until late 94 and after that I thought yeup. He's the man. When this CD came out it didn't get much air time. Grunge was the big thing and many hard rock stations felt it was a bit too heavy. Sad the timing wasn't right for this great music. Russ really seamed to add a dose of refinement to the mix. I don't feel Fight was the same without him. Edit Yeah, I agree. I like them much more than Priest.
Spot on analysis. The Steel Panther is a great band, first and foremost. Each member is a great musician. Combined, they light the stage on-fire, are the ultimate anti-PC band, and hark back to the great days of classic rock and roll.
During the first part, I can hear what sounds like a classical guitar exercise melding into a VH influenced lead. A small bit of blues on the opening licks too.
You nailed it. Some people can't appreciate anything. For instance, I would never intentionally listen to country. But, I totally appreciate a lot of those guys. Some country guitarists are absolute monsters!. Even the older guys. Roy clark, Les Paul (obviously) and the master, who doesn't get enough recognition, Chet Atkins. Holy shit those guys could tear apart a fretboard.
SP may be a parody band, but the skill is top tier...no joke. All due respect to the rest of the band, each amazing in their own right, Satchel will go down as the genius court jester of rock guitar.
Fil, you are, by far, the best on TH-cam. I also love that you enjoy the music and the musicians. I find new musicians all the time because I’ve recently become all but confined to a chair, so youtube is a blessing for me, but when I see someone I like I come to your channel and see what you think of them also, like Trucks as well as some of my old favorites like Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed. Thanks for this.
Agree. All jokes about the Band itself, he and his mates are very talented and experienced with their instruments! I’ve seen his TH-cam guitar instructions and is a very different person which highlights his showmanship on stage. Excellent stuff! Thx
I was a teen in the 80s and enjoyed metal and other genres, but especially metal. I got turned onto SP six or seven years ago and I got it. I was immediately hooked, and thought 'My God, he has all the riffs and runs, tone etc'. In my opinion he is a virtuoso. Like you pointed out, ability to play on this level with absolute precision such as he does will not happen in a few years. I saw SP about five years ago; their musicianship is phenomenal..these guys aren't messing around and I can guarantee you that if you happen to catch them live that his playing is so spot on and flawless that you will not believe your eyes nor ears!!
Again, you have gone to the core of one of my eclectic tastes. I've always liked a bit of parody if it's relevant, and Steel Panther are the present day masters. As you say, these guys can't do what they do without supreme talent, as well as knowing what, and how far to send something up. I saw Flo and Eddy (ex Turtles, ex Mothers) do it in a couple of shows in Australia in 1971/'72. Mixing their own work, incorporating mimicry, satire and current affairs into thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining concerts. As for Satchel's , and the others that you mentioned, delay trickery, the first person I saw do that was Jimmy Page, at Zeppelin's Sydney concert, in 1972. The song was Dazed and Confused. There was way more naivety back then about production and gear, and whilst I had heard it on the record, Page's sorcery with the violin bow, delay, and showmanship looked like he was summoning notes from thin air. Peerless! Of course, I am familiar with whole Steel Panther concept, and though he's just a characterisation, a rumour that yourself and Satchel could be related, wouldn't be that hard to swallow. (Just kiddin".......)
I'm 60 years old , I own two guitars , my bought NEW 83 Ibanez Roadstar 2, and Slick SL54T, both guitars have only 1 Humbucker, that's MY sound , along with my new VOX Brian May amPlug, which is Incredible!
I played in a JP trib at the same time he was in the punks. We played together a few times. The JP band I was in covered fight songs. We wouldn’t get the first couple chords into nailed to the gun or into the pit and he’d be front and center rocking hard. As you know he was one of the guitarists in fight with Halford. Satchel is super chill and he is really funny.
Satchel used to play for Halford's band, "Fight". He's the one who starts out the solo th-cam.com/video/YukG7HYa_g0/w-d-xo.html His real name is Russ Parrish. He was also in a band with Paul Gilbert called Electric Fence.
Fil, something Steel Panther does in their concerts is to allow fans get on stage and play with them. That is a topic to discuss for another day. Very risky!!
Phil Russ Parrish is Satchel He was a Musicians Institute instructor in the early 1990's there and was one of my instructors! I played on stage with him many hours! Along with Tim Boghert of Vanilla Fudge and Doan Perry of Jethro Tull. We played lots of Led Zeppelin and VH Russ was always on He was room mate with Paul Gilbert . I always knew where Russ was at playing on stage with him and where I needed to be! He's flawless !

I don't follow Steel Panther but I play and love metal guitar. I've seen many of their interviews and I have to admit they are a guilty pleasure.I watched the original video of this and it's obvious even his solo is meant to be part of the act but wow Satchels talent comes through that gives the fans even more reason to get into it because they realize they are seeing true talent. That is awesome guitar playing. The whole drum thing is fun also because he's just entertaining the crowd.
Hi Fil !!!! I liken this to modern jazz, notational gymnastics. No denying the talent and skill level it takes to do this, but to me it's just a higher level of practicing your scales. I would rather listen to a really good drum solo. Having said all that, the dude can shred an ax.
Completely agree. I am in awe of his technical ability, but this sort of playing does nothing for me emotionally. It just seems like an almighty self-indulgent wank.
I saw Atomic Punks at House of Blues at L.A. I still have pictures that Ralph took from stage with our camera and gave it back. I have close up picture of Ralph when he comes to ask can he borrow the camera and took pictures of audiece from stage. It was great gig. 😅😎🤘
When they used to play at the Viper as Metal Skool, he would pull out his flip phone and screw around with it as a slide, etc., then put the guitar on the floor, doing tapping with the phone, then get up, call his voicemail, and hold it up to the mic, where it would play the rest of the solo. Hilarious band.
I love when people snub him online... I play guitar and sing in a Pirate spoof band in Destin, FL. Same idea; granted I’m not worthy of any compare except that other musicians think it’s all gimmick. It’s more work than when I played seriously (haha) in the 80’s, and thought we worked hard. Nothing but respect for this man. He writes originals on the regular and has more talent than half the globe. Genius and my favorite guitarist hands down Proof’s in the chops while he’s also acting. Like Fil said, “try it” lol. Bless all yas and rock on Mates! Cheers Satch!
Every time I hear the name Steel Panther I can’t help but think “Spinal Tap”. Satchel gets the satirical nature of Steel Panther and he embraces it with enthusiasm. He has also nailed some of EVH’s best licks. Heard some Vai in there as well.
Thx Fil. Not something I would have ever been exposed to, had you not analyzed it. Not my genre of music nor theme, but I do appreciate great talent and hard work. Enjoyed listening to what you sampled from this, and I always respect your opinion.
I’m not easily offended and have jammed a bunch of Steel Panther but these guys have such a fowl sense of humor and language I really can’t share much of their music with many of the people I know. I get that it’s part of the show but it does limit their exposure to some degree.
No...it wasn't grunge, hip hop or rap's fault for "killing rock" . It was rock itself that killed rock. It became too serious and suddenly it wasn't cool to have fun while playing rock music. Take bands from the Nu Metal scene...they were all trying too hard to be cool, rather then having any fun. People like to have fun, and rock n roll from the 50's all the way up the 80's, was fun...it was very fun. The Grunge hit, and it got dark, like really dark. We basically had Layne Staley from Alice n Chains telling us he was gonna die from heroin. Even the movies from the 90's got dark too (Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers etc). Rock lost ground to Rap and Pop because those guys were having fun still...and people got drawn to that. Even shitty EDM music had fun beats and people wanted to dance and party. AT least a few bands like Buck Cherry were trying to keep the party vibe going, but I think it was too little to late. If new rock bands could start bringing rock n roll back again, a good place to start is getting back to being a bit silly, but do it with good technique and great riffs...the audience will find its way back again

Your musical journey for us leads us to many places and I have learned to appreciate people's techniques. But like any great captain of a ship, you have to touch down in your home port every once in a while. And like a good tour guide, you showed us your knowledge of this genre. Some of us are made for traveling, LOL. But of course this was appreciated for your analyses of technical abilities.
A month ago I saw Steel Panther. I got to the venue way early and saw the guys come of their bus. It was a trip seeing Satchel without his wig, his real hair is short, like a marine recruit. And he is short and thin. I’d guess he’s 5’ 4” and 125. No big deal just that it was interesting seeing them out of character. Except Michael, he is really always in character
Metal Skool is the original name of the band, which some may not know is a play on Metals Cool. These guys are among the most talented musicians of all time. Satchels guitar work and Michaels voice are the things that stand out for me, but Lexi and Stix are no slouches either. I hope Lexi gets it together. I saw an interview with him a few weeks ago where he discusses his new band. He was high out of his mind. Travis seems like such a good dude, I hope he pulls that together, addicted is no way to live. Pulling for you Travis!!!
Great job as usual, Fil. Your analyses are always interesting, educational and entertaining. A suggestion I have is to provide an analysis of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love." I hope you can work it in. Keep up the good work!
Believe it or not Dave Navarro was born out of that same VanHalen/Dokken/Metallica stew. He could play those same types of riffs, but didn’t. Jane’s was punkish art rock metal that had sex with Bad Brains and 80s british goth rockers who’s uncles were Zeppelin and Floyd. Probably one of the few underground “alternative” bands that could play their instruments well.
Satchel and the band are highly talented. Cover band players learn so much from their trade as they don’t just play one style, unless they are a tribute band. The versatility is well above that you get from players in recording bands. BTW it’s not just about practice. The level of natural talent is a big factor along with the guys approach to his music, respectful and appreciative of other great players. He’s in my top players list.
Thank you for explaining all the innuendos of what goes on at the concerts and videos. I know NOTHING ABOUT guitars, however I did notice Satch was playing when HE REALLY WASN'T PLAYING. I was thinking was this a taped show? It could very well be, but you explaining the delay makes perfect sense. I recognize "Flight of the Bumblebee" and the scales or what it's called in music, "A doe, a deer, a female deer, raise a drop of golden sun... which will bring us back to doe, ray, me, fa, so, la, de, doe". Those are not rock solos. One is a classic/classical and the other is a teaching of music. He knows A LOT AND CAN PLAY ANYTHING. The entire band is extremely talented. This is serious stuff with fun thrown in to make money. They have some funny channels, but they critique ALL MUSIC, which if it's done well, is so much appreciated. Plus, Stix remembers THE GONG SHOW with Chuck Barris! I wonder what he thinks of GENE, GENE, THE DANCING MACHINE, 😆. Very talented band with fun thrown in for making a living. But, EXTREMELY SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR TRADE. 😊🤗😍🥰❤🌸🤟. PS I LOVE YOUR HAIR!!!

Nobody used the term hair metal in the 80's
@@robertthomas7239 maybe not in your part of the world, doesn't mean it wasn't used in my part of the world. Were you around in the 80s? If so how old?
I always say that if Steel Panther wanted to be a serious band, they 100% could be... But I'm so happy they stick with satirical comedy and now I've seen them live, it's no secret that they really are some of the most talented musicians out there!
you can hear eddies licks in satchels riff, its really cool to be able to absolutely recognize the different influence , awesome riff , second satchel video ive seen this week , thanks man !!
Everybody underestimates satchel until they see him play he's amazing
Am I wrong for liking before I even watched it? 🤘🤘🤘
No. One can always assume that Fil will do his level best to be impartial in all of his analyses. And being impartial is what an analyses is all about. Fil is just that good at what he does.
Not at all. I do it all the time, see the notification, click on the channel, hit the like, comment "Hi Fil !!!!", watch the video and edit my comment if I have anything to add as I watch.
Because no matter what Fil is covering it's going to be good.
Nope!
Satchel is a tremendous guitar player!! One of the legit best ever, and doing it as a satirical band only makes it that much better. Steele Panther really nails the 80s sound.
Satchel and SP allow me to slip back into the 80’s whenever I want
Great, I expected a miniature Stonehenge to descend on stage at any point!
James Anderson 😂😂
11 tiny stonehenges.
They had a stonehendge, but it got crushed by a dwarf...
Satchel plays so well because his Amp goes to Eleven. 🙃
Your videos consistently are so spot on in the review, and you've helped give me a whole other appreciation for performances and music in new ways. You've also inspired me to pick the guitar up again. Thanks for making so many great vids!
I didn't even know about Steel Panthers until you introduce me to them months ago....great band!! Thanks Fil!..✌️❤️🤘
Same here .
I live in States. Grew up on cheeky comedy. Nothing else to say. Love this video. Cheers
One of my favorite quotes by any musician: _"Does humor belong in music?"_ -Frank Zappa.
You are so right!!🎸.....Love to hear Satchel play✨Enjoyed your input!
This guys humour is equally as good as his playing, all the guys in Panther are incredible at what they do.
Russ Parrish is a very very talented guitarist. He played for Rob Halford that pretty much sums it up
Wasn't he in Atomic Punk, one of the best VH cover bands ever, as well?
@@suprunown yes, him and Ralph Saenz AKA Michael Star
He's in the FIGHT video.
Edit
"For all Eternity" not from here to Eternity.
(I believe Russ went there in the late 80s. )
There were bumper stickers around there n LA that said Russ Parish for President.
Edit
Yeah, I agree.
Very Excellent Analyses Fil! You really broke this down well. I can't think of anything else to say. Great freaking job! Greg
Wow I've been following you for a couple of years and I still get amazed about how much knowledge you have about the music world
Fantastic analysis!! Yeah there's no question, these guys are some serious musicians!
Your review was spot on. True professional musicians.
Steel Panther rocks!!! I like their funny perspectives and how they incorporate it into music that is not bound by industry/radio norms.
Satchel is incredible! He has worked with many artists such as Steve Vai, and others.
Awesome description Sir! You captured Steel Panther perfectly.🤟🔥🎸 Satchel is a master..
Sach vs Eddie ,, now that would have been a pay per view right there.
Steel Panther is awesome to see and everyone of them is a tribute to greatness.
Love the new intro, love Steel Panther! Glad to see someone take a look at them for their true talent. Some folks can't see past the comedy.
He’s so 80’s ..... I love it!!!!!
Would love to see a guitar duel between Satchel and Nigel Tufnel!
Aw,Satchel wins hands down!
Nigel smushes him
Sach vs Eddie , now that would have been a pay per view right there.
I'm 60 years old , I own two guitars , my bought NEW 83 Ibanez Roadstar 2, and Slick SL54T, both guitars have only 1 Humbucker, that's MY sound , along with my new VOX Brian May amPlug, which is Incredible!
Dudes a hell of a player...always plays clean and precise
Love the new opening!! Fantastic job of giving these guys due respect ✊✌️
FIL!! I always learn something great Insight thankyou yer boi in Springfield Illinois
Another great analysis Fil. First you introduced me to Lonnie Mack and now make me appreciate Steel Panther... Keep it up
I am a new subscriber. Your content is terrific. I'm 55 and you provide so much info that takes me back to the good old days. I'm having a mid life crisis and this has me wanting to dig out the Gibson GS I have packed away somewhere...
Satchel plays guitar on "rainbow in the dark" from Dio's tribute album "This Is your life" with Corey Taylor on vocals.
Satchel Is an effin genius
I don't follow Steel Panther but I play and love metal guitar. I've seen many of their interviews and I have to admit they are a guilty pleasure.I watched the original video of this and it's obvious even his solo is meant to be part of the act but wow Satchels talent comes through that gives the fans even more reason to get into it because they realize they are seeing true talent. That is awesome guitar playing. The whole drum thing is fun also because he's just entertaining the crowd.
Hi Fil !!!!
I liken this to modern jazz, notational gymnastics.
No denying the talent and skill level it takes to do this,
but to me it's just a higher level of practicing your scales.
I would rather listen to a really good drum solo.
Having said all that, the dude can shred an ax.
Completely agree. I am in awe of his technical ability, but this sort of playing does nothing for me emotionally. It just seems like an almighty self-indulgent wank.
An Almighty self-indulgent wank ........ Now there's ya a visual ........ =^>
@@davidcantwell2489 Amen to that.
Steel Panther brought me here. The host's respect kept me here.
I saw Atomic Punks at House of Blues at L.A. I still have pictures that Ralph took from stage with our camera and gave it back. I have close up picture of Ralph when he comes to ask can he borrow the camera and took pictures of audiece from stage. It was great gig. 😅😎🤘
I didn’t know Satchel was my favorite guitarist until I saw him perform this solo.
Fil, great analysis of the era. Satchel is a compendium of styles, for sure, and quite the shredder, too.
His technique and feel are off the charts. Showman n vocals
It's nice to watch one world class quitarist start smiling while watching another world class quitarist do his thing.
Yeah!!! 🔥🎸 steel panther/ satchel ! 🔥🎸 thanks Fil! They are so good! What a heck of a show they put on! 🔥🎸
An incredible live band, not many around as consistently good as Satchel.
Why do people always blame grunge for the death of Metal? The shit known as rap/hip hop was also to blame.
Metal never died so I have no Idea what you are talking about!
You can't kill the metal
The metal will live on
Punk Rock tried to kill the metal
But they failed, as they were smite to the ground
New wave tried to kill the metal
But they failed, as they were stricken down to the ground
Grunge tried to kill the metal, hahahaha
They failed, as they were thrown to the ground
Aargh! yeah
No one can destroy the metal
The metal will strike you down with a vicious blow
We are the vanquished foes of the metal
We tried to win for why we do not know
New wave tried to destroy the metal, but the metal had its way
Grunge then tried to dethrone the metal, but metal was in the way
Punk Rock tried to destroy the metal, but metal was much too strong
Techno tried to defile the metal, but techno was proven wrong
Yea!
Guitarists like this must tap into some force in the cosmos that the rest of us don't know about! Amazing 👍
This piece encapsulates everything I dont like about shredding and tapping, I mean that melody, I'll be humming it all day, what an ear worm ;)
Doing laundry, drinking coffee and watching Fil at 6am. Enjoyed. Have a great day!
He’s in my top players list.
it is eruption, redone.
he is a very good player, and plays tribute to his main influence.
I loved what he did with "Fight" in the early 90's, too.
