"Supposedly" the dress code was implemented to dignify chess and the players. A photo posted online clearly shows the FIDE president dressed in jeans and sneakers in a formal meeting with a senior Chinese government official. What is allowed to the top leadership of FIDE is not allowed to chess players. COMPLETE HYPOCRISY!!!
Do they give title to fide officials when the tournament is over?
@@rohitkevat3271Idk what you even talking about. Just search up the FIDE dress code rules. They explicitly say jeans are allowed for men who are participating in chess games lmao. Google it
You can argue that the dress code rule is bad while also saying what Magnus did was silly as well. If you didn't like the rule, don't come to the tournament. Don't act innocent when a rule is enforced.
Anything can be shown online nowadays to prove a point. Without details this is a baseless accusation. Fake news, sorry
Just don't sign up for the tournament in which you are not agree with rules. Simple
You should add that Magnus agreed to change the next day, but FIDE was demanding he does so in between rounds. Absolutely ridiculous
So what he had given enough time for that day
I think the problem appears at 1:40
It's not so much about the jeans but about his naked back 😌
Had he continued to wear his vest, the issue might not have happened...
On camera for the world, this is actually kind of annoying for Fide, and for Magnus as well. Not the jeans, but the way his back is uncovered, on camera, him being the most important player people can find this improper. I don't mind personally but I can understand Fide minds
@asking professional chess players to go change jeans 👖 in the middle of a serious tournament is reasonable ? 😅 ok 👍
@@Karan_Singh14 bro it sounds easier on paper but going back, changing trousers and then coming back, wud have been time consuming and also probably affected his game further, so i think he did right not continuing
That's exactly why they are stupid 😂
One information is missing: there are other players not dressed to the rules, but as they are not in focus of the cameras, it didn't matter. By that fide treats players different when breaking rules, and that's not fair and is weird as it demands to be the governing body of chess.
Yeah on X there is even a video of a chess player at the tournament having similar jeans as Magnus. But he said to the arbiter that its "trousers" and they accepted that.
So absurd. And its more players then a "handful" of players that didn't follow the dress code and Fide is trying to control the narrative but we know the truth. Fide is wrong here 100 %.
You can't just throw that in there. You have to be specific. I'm sure given Magnus' stature they are not picking on him. It's just not worth it to pick up a fight with him.
@@truthalonetriumphs6572 With the added context of their arguments about Magnus' freestyle chess behind the scenes, it is absolutely possible that FIDE is picking a fight with him to make him look bad

Magnus did compromise, got the fine, and was going to change the next day, so what is with Fide being desperate to force him to run to the hotel to change right now?!

Bigger picture. It probably ain't about the jeans in the first place. There's something more between Magnus and FIDE. As time goes on, we're getting our eyes peeled about Fischer and Kasparov's situation as well.
It's a stupid rule. What does what you wear have to do with your chess playing and whether you are good or not. I side with Magnus and good for him standing up for the principal of a stupid-ass rule

Ridiculous stubbornness by FIDE. I am at this tournament to see great players play chess. I would have gone to a fashion show if I was interested in dressing style
Ok but let's be honest here: no other sport requires one to run and change mid game. Requiring even a "3min walk" to your hotel in a 30min respite is absolutely ludicrous. Having Nepo do it is not a precedent to showcase Magnus being uncooperative. It just shows Nepo was willing to bend over this time, uncharacteristically.
Michael Jordan was fined every game he wore his Jordan 1s. They didn't make him sit out. They just fined him.
This was a strong arm overreaction by Fide.
Disappointed in how Vishy is quick to defend and disgusted by the nonchalant attitude by the CEO amidst the current controversies and failing relevance of FIDE.
Rules are made for over the board, not under the table.
A dress code doesn't bring people to chess. It isn't the 1600s.
I was brought to chess due to Magnus' viral videos of his very unprofessional behavior of showing up late to games.
It's far past time to reevaluate the way forward for chess.
This isn't it.
(It was your commentary, Sagar, on Magnus having 30 sec in his clock during a Blitz tournament that brought me to chess. I'm now addicted. Ha!)
Rule was known beforehand.
@@julius7506 FIDE threatening players was also known beforehand. Even if they conviently worded their tweet a specific way, to make it sound like they didnt "threaten". they still wanted to force players to choose between FIDE or Freestyle chess events. As Hikaru stated, he told Magnus over a week ago that he would choose Freestyle chess if needed.
@@julius7506 lol and with Michael Jordan. What is your point?
@@lightofscorpio9396 If FIDE was really so opposed to freestyle chess and threatened players to chose one, they wouldn't allow freestyle match to be organized in Singapore right before the World Championship match, especially with official WCC conference host Ashley playing both of those freestyle matches.
And if FIDE really don't want players to play both, we would see players like Fabiano, Gukesh, Nodirbek complaining or playing only one of the two, which we know isn't going to happen.
Gukesh openly supported and showed interest for freestyle in official interview and FIDE had no problem with it.
I´m sad. I want to see Magnus play and let the magic happen do win totally drawn positions or come back from a losing position or do other Magnus things. He inspires so many people to play chess.

If anything FIDE accepted the gambit, wouldn't you say?
It was just one game left to play. Why change clothing in the middle of a tournament, Magnus looked good enough. Magnus said he would change clothes the next day, Fide should have accepted that. Bad move by Fide...
Bro just stop this cap, didn't he know about the rules while he was dressing for the day? How many championships has he contested in? Let's be objective here.
Magnus already paid the fine like he should. Magnus agreed to change clothes the next day, that should be enough considering he is the goat and was not "bad looking". Rules are rules but Fide did a mistake in this case regardless.
"Why change clothes in the middle of the tournament", indeed. Magnus wore proper attire on the first day, so why change it for the second day? According to him, he made a mistake, but why not simply correct the mistake? He was given more than enough time to do so. Magnus has issues with FIDE which is why he overreacted so poorly in this instance. He let himself, the fans, and the sport down by entering pathetic power play.
i think the whole jeans thing is absurd!
but it is even more absurd demanding a grown man go change his pants with one game remaining, especially after he agreed to change for the next day and payed a fine!
this is all on fide!
@@ralphbooger4756 You could basically see his butt crack at 1:40. These tournaments rely on sponsors all around the world. Some of them have more traditional views on the importance of the dress codes. FIDE doesnt want to risk anything so they asked him to change. He could literally have had somebody bring him his jeans and change somewhere in a private room. I agree 100% with @coolcat23 that this looks more like a childish powerplay or some pretence to spark controversy with FIDE.
It is absurd how fast everybody is on Magnus side just because everybody likes him. The rules should be the same for everybody. Just because hes the goat doesnt mean he can do whatever he wants while the others have to oblige to the rules.
The most surprising comment was that Peter Heine considers he has been holding back!
It's not surprising. As Hans Neiman said, if you think it was about jeans, you weren't paying attention.

Bro Carlsen's back is always out whenever he wears jeans, even in the video at 1:40. Probably that's the issue.
Great summary Sagar.
In my opinion, Magnus might be overreacting if this issue is solely about a dress code. However, as he mentioned in his interview, FIDE has been targeting top players who participate in Freestyle chess. This could be the tipping point of a long-standing conflict, potentially bursting a bubble that has been building for some time. If FIDE does not take proactive measures, we might witness an unprecedented revolution in the history of sports.
What is this freestyle chess, are they trying to set up a Fischer Random chess system, by " stealing " Fischer's original idea?
@@MartialShadow7seems like. Check their website, they have planned the entire 2025 in advance that might disrupt FIDE candidates circuit events.

Its absolutely about what Hans said... Fide FEARS Magnus. Magnus has become greater than almost chess itself. so its only natural that Fide wants to shut down the one thing that cant control and may take away the power over chess they've had for ages.
Same like LIV golf and footballs's wanna break away European Super League.
You are reta/rded if you think Mangoose is bigger than Chess.. Chess has been there since more than 1500 years.. Mangoose will become irrelevant in 5 years when the youngsters take over completely.. & since he has decided to not play in Fide events it might even happen sooner in 2-3 years.. 10 years from now everyone will forget his era & latch on to others.. 20 years later there'll be hardly any mention of him coz all his records will be broken.. 50-70 years from now Mangoose will be dead while regretting his decision.. chess will continue to exist & he'll be rotting six feet under.
I agree to a certain extent, but let's be honest, if this is the case, fide itself is being stupid to go against its number 1 player in the world and want to chase him, Fide needs Magnus much more than Magnus needs Fide
Magnus is magnus ❤
If there are rules then there dress should be checked at the entry point..why to embrace someone inbetween the match to change his dress.. really ridiculous
Magnus is the one who always bring chess in the limelight 🤟😎✔️
Honestly I can understand Fide has some issues. But in spite of those issues, and all the 150 players knowing the issues had decided to play in the tournament. All of them already knew the dress code. And true the dress code sounds ridiculous and unreasonable but it was there in the regulations section and none of the players complained at the beginning of the tournament about it. Even Magnus knew the dress code and he violated it, he violated a rule. He chose a middle of a tournament to protest against the rule. If he did not want to comply with any particular rule then why not approach the authorities before the tournament begins, why suddenly in the middle?
A rule is a rule and everyone should follow the rule especially if they are already aware of the rule. I don't know if Magnus was just in a bad mood that he was not in a good position or leading in the entire tournament but what he did was very very unreasonable. Everyone one should comply and maintain rules.
Very true!!
Nobody is above the game.
Tbh magnus is above FIDE here. Also it's a stupid rule that doesn't make sense. It's an individual sport and currently magnus is chess. We'll see what happens now it'll be interesting as all the top players like bobby and garry who have tried to go separate ways in the past didn't work. This time it's magnus and clearly he isn't coming back it'll be interesting to say how the next year goes
Someone needed to openly criticize fide's rules. Some of the rules are really stupid.
Kid it's not about dress code 😂😂
And second thing he looked more professional in those pairs of pants than most of GMs.
"Everyone one should comply and maintain rules." Actually that's not true. The rule has to make sense also, otherwise the German soldier shooting Jews also was following rules. FIDE is free to enforce its rules (even stupid rules), Magnus is free to disobey and break-up with FIDE. Sometimes disorder and chaos brings fresh creation.

Some rules and laws are ridiculous and should be broken, this includes FIDE's silly dress code.
Magnus’ move is called The Quitter. What a nut job!
People saying “a rule is a rule” ignore the fact that this rule has been challenged and criticized by lots of players over the last years.
A federation of a sport should care to adapt the rules to the reality and always serving the sport itself; if it’s clear that they are no longer justified or providing any tangent value to the sport, they should change them instead of just following them blindly.
If the voice of the players is constantly ignored, rebelling like Magnus did is the only way.
In this sense, the arbiters did their job. This should have prevented by modernizing the rulebook long ago, now it was too late for Magnus.
Still the decision to violate the rules is totally his fault and responsibility, he could have complied and complained publicly after the tournament, ideally gathering support from other players. Guess it’s too late for that now…
actually the rule is from FIDE and the players, some organization of players also agreed to this, so ....

This guy should be sponsored by Levis
I stand behind a FIDE.
You’re missing the main point of all this: Magnus is trying to delegitimize Fide and their titles to promote his Freestyle nonsense
He forfeited the classical title, shit talked Ding v Gukesh and now is pulling stunts like this at the World Rapid and Blitz.
All so that people go the actual winners like Gukesh aren’t “real” champions
Let's see... Gukash playing at event, Carlson playing at another.. I know where the sponsors will go..
@ yes, towards Gukesh because eventually a billion Indian people watching will absolutely outweigh what little interest chess can garner in the rest of the world
A billion improvised Indians watching who live in slums and can’t feed themselves - I know where the sponsors will go
Ofcourse Gukesh is the world champion. But regarding the level and quality of play that world championship demands, we can failry say that neither Gukesh nor Ding met that standard.
Freestyle Chess isn't nonsense though, it may well be the future of chess!!
It's almost 2025, and FIDE is still promoting the message that chess is a gentleman's sport. While chess is a game that anyone can play, regardless of their wealth, gender, or age. Sometimes, all you need is some stones to play chess.
Also I think Magnus is Right by the way he is the goat of this sport(chess)
Nobody bigger than sports ......if it is then it will be called a monopoly
Sport is bigger than player
Club was bigger than superstar player
And in this chess to. We must accept the rule. Even wimbeldon tennis too

This publicity stunt was premeditated
" Law without Justice is BLIND ; Justice without law is LAME ; and " Law GEARED to Justice " is ORDER " ---- This is the saying of a Great Judge of Supreme Court of India i.e, Justice V R Krishna Iyer . In other words, Law should serve justice. This aphorism applies in the present case.
First point : The VERY RULE of FIDE is BLATANTLY WRONG as well as SUB-HUMAN .
Second point -- Enforcing the said rule and barring ( not pairing ) Magnus is all the MORE SUB-HUMAN , if not inhuman.
We add further that imposition of Heavy / Double Fine on Magnus would have been JUST, FAIR and Sound ., but not disqualifying him for the next round of the competition.
Just one question. Would Magnus have walked out if he was at the top of the table?
not being paired up killed all his remaining chances and since fide was already testing his patience, he simply didnt find any reason to continue, THATS IT!
He decided not to comply with the dress code, though there was apparently time to go and change it.. this was his call, and he built a narrative that "FIDE disqualified Carles"! Very immature..
Of course. If cared about title, then he wouldn't have abandoned classic world champion. He had already won everything so many times. Winning or losing doesn't make any difference to his legacy.
If u have any propaganda plz stop it's clear that some stereotypes should be changed it's 2024 and 12 year straight world no:1 y should he threatened he will lose🤣🤣🤣he proved everything
No propaganda needed to understand that no-one is above the game.
over a pair of jeans is crazy
Every sport has rules. Magnus is tired of chess. Let him go to freestyle.
Welcome to the future, FIDE.
As an outsider this rule seems archaic 🤷♂️
I didn't know there's a new gambit 😮
this guy may be the goat but never disrespect the game is what i wanna say, chess gave him his fame and put food on his table but he should respect that, maybe he has problem with fide but i feel like he is disrespectful to us fans by not respecting the rules.
what a stupid take, this has nothing to do with chess. FIDE is an organization. Chess is an activity. He earned his fame partly through playing in FIDE, but applying your own stupid logic, if FIDE suddenly required all the players to execute a small child before the game would you say the same thing?
@ i don't understand what's going on you are on about but rule is rule, same for everyone including magnus. no jeans means no jeans and no fkn exception. he didn't follow the rules means he fkn don't care about everything including us fans, who wants to see him play. Everyone had no problem with him not wanting to play in chess championship given his own reason but he it seems he is on an ego trip, he has problem with everything.
@@LeviAckerman-vm4mo I tried to use a kindergarten level of logic but I guess some chess players don’t possess that. Let me dumb it down even simpler for you. If you are apart of an organization and they make a stupid rule that you don’t follow, that doesn’t mean you disrespect the organization by not following it.
@ why not protest it when they made the rule? why does he have to protest it now? he thinks he is bigger than the game, that's all. smartass like you need to understand this.
Rule is rule❤
It's simple. Magnus and FIDE were not on the same page about freestyle chess. He looks like he was just looking for a cause to take up a fight against FIDE so that he can now openly promote freestyle chess(which he has been doing a lot more in the recent times).
