I have use the strong leg up, weak leg down since the beginning but now, when I put the strong leg to go up, my weak leg will scissor behind the strong leg. What exercise can I do to not have the leg scissor behind me

Thank you. This is really very helpful for me, especially the going down at an angle, that’s like a Revelation. Because I freak out going downstairs when I look at the incline and sometimes the ground/ terrain appears to be shifting then that immediately imbalances my mind, and then my whole body is thrown out of balance and alignment
These are really very helpful tips. Thank you Tara. Bless you

I loved this video Dr Tobias, thank you so much! I am 5 weeks post - right sided brain stroke (Ischemic) Your videos have helped me enormously in my recovery. I am about to attempt the stairs again, after listening to your expert advice. I'm going to ask a friend to video my foot/leg movement so I can see what to correct. I look forward to your next video alway. Yours in gratitude, Tania

Practice this and it will teach you better body awareness to eventually learn how to get out of bed from a laying down position. Often time after I practice this with a patient, they tell me they can get in and out of be a lot easier. :)

    Hi Tara,
I am into my fifth year post ischemic stroke. Left side involved.
I watch your videos again and again. I have had many physical and occupational therapist. I have never had one that really approaches my therapy with a clear vision of recovering from stroke. Even the neuros. You seem to have a great understanding of stroke.
I have asked every therapist to teach me to fall safely. The most common remark “We don’t want you to fall” and so they don’t. I have fallen twice where I broke my involved arm.
Could you please do a video about falling safely?
    Thanks Howard

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you for the comment and the suggestion! First things first, try and figure out why the falls are happening and fix that. Second, yes, learn how to fall and protect the most vulnerable/fragile parts of the body. :) I will add this to the list. :)

Excellent video Tara, I can alreasy do house stairs and your way of going up and down a kerb seems right to me. My physio wants me to always keep my quad stick with my weaker leg, but it seems right to put it on the next step up when going up, putting my affected leg down first when going down stairs seems scary to me with the stick behind me but I'm less scared of tipping backwards than forwards down the stairs. I have a drop foot and struggle to lift my heavy knee high enough to come up the stair, my toes always catch as you say. Thank you for your helpful videos, would be nice sometime to see one of your stroke patients do the demos, we all know you don't have the stroke problems that we have, you make it look so easy, but your topics are always very relevant.

I had hemiplegia due to a brain surgery causing a strokeand i have used both legs to go up stairs but i cant grab the bars with my left arm yet. I have shorter steps made of wood to get mr into my house but just going to the floor upstairs my good leg gets me up however my good leg muscles very sore from the climb up . especially on the outer side of my knee and the lower leg too. Inliked your video on hyprtextension. I have it onmy affected side and im trying your board excercise with a wedge under the hip which helps. this is 8 years so far but my determination will see me through. I really like your videos . I showed it to my therapistand she finds them helpfull too. shes a retired physiotherapist and volunteered to help me with my recovery. Its very hard work. I assume I have to wait for my posterior chain to be stronger before attempting going down the stairs to my basement?

The issue is that when we push with the good leg
, the bad leg continues bearing the body weight. So it acts in fact as the only supporter of the whole weight.

in PT immediately after my second stroke that really hurt my left side they had me go sideways up/down stairs when I only had a rail on my involved (? bad) side. it worked well for me and felt safer than leading with that leg backwards plus with cats who can be unpredictable crazy obstacles makes me glad I have a ramp and no steps in house although it did not stop one from tripping me last week. deep bone bruise in arm halted progress I made after reinjuring my shoulder lifting it to put a shirt on with assistance re killing my range of motion. got a ton of your videos bookmarked to work closest to furthest to hopefully reduce spasticity and maybe regain more motion than I did in six months of pushing myself hard in PT five days a week. if I can regain use of fingers I will be even happier though

Thanks once again for your explanation of what used to be something I did without having to think about it. I have a problem with leading with my stroke leg when I’m coming downstairs. It tends to swing inwards towards where my good foot will want to be next time around and I can’t stop it. I’m trying to avoid tripping myself up so 7 months after my stroke (In hospital for 9 weeks) I’m not confident enough that I can control the stroke leg enough to lead with it. Any suggestions?

I have been recovering from a stroke. And I have been watching all your videos. The stroke was in 2017 and the initial recovery was good. The problem I face is the fear of knee buckling. While climbing down the stairs, my involved leg has to go down, but it is hyperextended. So I end up putting down my uninvolved leg down first. Same holds good for walking too. I am slow, but I manage without a cane. A slightest elevation, I seek somebody's hand or some kind of support to get myself up. Pls do help with this?
