  • Erik ten Hag experimented with a 3-4-3 formation during Manchester United's win over Real Sociedad, here's why I'm excited about the potential for this tactic at Man Utd and why ten Hag's latest tactical innovation at Man United may owe something to managerial greats like Marcelo Biesla and Johan Cruyff! Ten Hag for the first time unleashed the Cruyff Diamond as United chased the game in the second half against Real Sociedad, a very attacking and adventurous tactical tweak that raised eyebrows and didn't appear to work, garnering a lot of questions about why he opted for this tactic and whether we could see it again in future.

Very interesting analysis Ste and as you rightly say it takes time. It’s taken us a couple of months to look comfortable using Ten Hag’s normal system so something like this was definitely worth a go in the circumstances. Nothing lost, and in future as we improve it will give us a very interesting option.

@@StephenHowson It's a fascinating formation. If u didn't know, Ten Hag actually used this formation quite a bit during his time at Ajax, and it would be Edson Alvarez as that no6 who would shuffle as an extra CB occasionally. I'm optimistic that we will use this formation frequently in future, if we are in desperate need for another goal. Great video as always.

Chuffed for these tactics and strategy videos. It was obvious this simply hadn't been practiced enough by the squad to be comfortable, but here's a different way to look at it:
Did we think, as fans, that ETH was going to get his point across with his main formation and mentality quickly enough to begin implementing a SECONDARY formation before the halfway point of his first season? Yes, it was a gamble, but he made the call, which means he had enough confidence to do it.
That being said (and the most important point): strategically, this was the perfect time in the perfect game to do this. Without a second goal, this could have been a win or a loss; the outcome was meaningless. It gives me a lot of hope for him actually sussing out young players and trying other new things in inconsequential matches, which hasn't necessarily been done by United managers for a while, regularly. This was his first season-match which allowed him to do experimentation (ie, outside of friendlies).
The 3-4-3 move by ETH made my day, and it gives me even more hope for the future. What a bangin manager he is.

  • @andrewtomlinson5237
    @andrewtomlinson5237 ปีที่แล้ว +3

What we are seeing with the team at the moment is their continued growth and ability to play in Ten Hag's primary formation.
It has taken this long for the first eleven, (plus the likes of McTominay, Lindelhof and Fred) to be playing relatively comfortably in the system. The passes that we watched them buggering up in the early training sessions are already flowing naturally and accurately. Lets not forget we are less than halfway into his first season and we've seen THIS much growth in the quality of play.
We are already seeing the initial benefits of his tactical prowess.
And this is why Ten Hag's plan is going to take time. It's not just about buying X, Y or Z player and everything being great.
There is way more to managing the team than what you do on an EA Sports simulator. Players don't work on a group AI, they need to learn and become used to systems, they will all find some things easier than others, and not always the same things as each other.
We need to be at a state where any player coming in to the first team fits that primary system without breaking the links.
BUT... we also need to develope the squad as a whole to be as comfortable playing in alternative systems, so that when we DO move to something like a 3-4-3, it is as fluid and natural as when playing in the standard system.
That only comes with experience over time.
This is where, after years of development, City is at. And considering they have "The greatest team/manager/etc in the world" Liverpool SHOULD be...
If any current manager is going to get Man United to that level, it's Ten Hag.

I love that we're seeing some experimentation and not just settling on the same formations and configurations we've defaulted to for years. It's great to see us trying this more 'out there' approach (even if it is a historic Cruyff idea), I think the football world in general has become a bit too safe and unwilling to go beyond the well known and established setups in a way. Still a very weirdly hostile reaction to anyone suggesting flexibility in certain positions, way too much "he can't play there". In a way this formation/setup is in and of itself a refutation of that limiting mentality, because it's creating scenarios where adjacent players are filling in for eachother on the fly, lots of shifting and covering.

You can see how's he transformed United into a team that's hard to beat and hasn't been conceding goals, plus creating lot's of chances. Plus he seems as obsessive as Pep and Klopp. The board just needs to back him and get him the players he needs.

I’d argue Rinus Michels is that single most influential mind, he developed total football, it was he who developed Cruyff as player tactically and influenced his philosophy, Van Gaal too though cruyff wanted minimal and freedom van Gaal demanded follow instruction, both students of michels, I’d say Pep is the perfect combination of both men.

Rinus Michels did not develop total football he brought it to a new era. Characters like Jimmy Hogan, Hugo Meisl and Jack Reynolds pioneered the concept of total football. Rinus Michels added a passing and aggressive attacking press to the game and developed the Dutch style of total football.
Cruijff brought the concept to the modern game that the likes of Barcelona and Spain went on to be called Tiki Taki.

I was a bit fascinated with Bakero in that Barca team when we had them in the CL groups. He was one of the best examples of a one- and two-touch player, and I think one of the reasons I was so taken by Scholes when he emerged is that I felt he was Bakero MkII. Tidy, technical, good shot, intelligent runs, small but great header of the ball. Laudrup was genius, but Bakero made things look so simple, and it was mesmeric.

Who the f*ck is Vic Buckingham? It was Rinus Michels who pioneered Total Football in the Netherlands. Brought to Spain by Cruyff and developed by Barcelona.

It just didn’t work. He should’ve stayed with the tactics of the first half, we looked way more dangerous and capable of getting the 2nd until he changed the tactic. Maguire up top was a ridiculous decision imo. I love ETH but he got it wrong that night.
