    The reason the two cards performs similarly is because you have very fast 16 GB DDR4 3200MHz memory, so if the graphics card interposing the textures, etc. in the memory, the performance remains relatively the same. All those who only have 8GB RAM and very slow RAM like me need more VRAM, because otherwise the performance goes unbelievably into the basement.

      @islam Both 512 MB and 1GB are not enough anymore... Sure, 8GB system memory helps, but 4GB VRAM together with 8 GB RAM is now the minimum for current games.
      To play something like Cyberpunk 2077 you need a GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5 and a AMD 6-core CPU for Full HD 60 fps.

    The reason gta v was similar on both is bc ya have a healthy 16gb ram so while the 1gb card swaps for dram the pc has enough to not be affected and from what i saw ya shouldve tested turning textures up to actually USE the extra vram and THEN there would be a huge selling point for the 2gb model. The 1gb would suffer sometimes if lets say someome puts it in a pc with like 4/6gb ram bc there would be limited extra dram for it to use. I would like to see you make another video on this

A rx550/560 or 1030/1050 (and they are 2 or 4gb) will perform similar or better depending on the games and are still not that expensive today. New technology = half the power use same performance.

    I'm not sure what to make of this. I had a 1GB MSI 7850 OC & it could barely play GTA V at 1080p with the lowest possible settings. The amount of VRAM does matter & your testing is extremely limited. If you're going to do videos such as this then it would probably be advised to carry out more thorough testing. For anyone watching, for the love of god if you want to play newer releases do not touch a 1GB card.

      What amount of RAM did you have? The main complaint I have with Matt's testing here is that most people don't get a 7850 and more than 8 GB of RAM. Both video cards are probably dipping into that giant 16 GB pool of RAM. If this was a more realistic setup, the 1 GB would probably be stuttering as the PC runs out of RAM and goes for the pagefile.

  • @MPdude237
    @MPdude237 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the reason for this is DDR4 memory. Typical DDR4 memory is clocked considerably higher than DDR3 and DDR2 and when the system starts using DRAM for VRAM overflow, this would impact results as Steve from hardware unboxed tested, that when a game is using less than %100 VRAM, memory speeds have very little impact, but when VRAM usage exceeds %100, memory speeds are more influential. It think this is were the perception of needing XYZ amount of VRAM comes from, because if you tested on a system that used DDR3 or DDR2 memory, the 1gb card would have performed noticeable or even substantially worse.

  • @Sir-Prizse
    @Sir-Prizse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've used a GTX 650 1GB for half a year, but only having a 1GB VRAM is an extreme problem that you can not even afford on the lowest settings. Because I have an old system with an i5-3470, 8GB DDR3-1333MHz singel channel and a 1680 x 1050 monitor, I have now switched to the R9 270X (HD 7970) which can play most game at least at medium settings.

    I'd like to see this tested with 8 GB of RAM. I figure if you're using this old stuff, you probably are skimping on RAM as well. At that point, the memory limitations would be very apparent as both cards would probably try dipping into the RAM and possibly pagefile for more memory.

    The way I understand it, VRam won't improve average fps. It will reduce load stutter as more VRam means less loading textures to ram.

  • @evanross8810
    @evanross8810 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you wanna make it so the VRAM is pretty much the only limiter, push the textures up higher on the games, textures won't hurt the power of the card, just the VRAM usage. So for a good test grab a game that you know runs great at low, then turn the textures up a bit then see what happens 🤓👌

    04:01 More memory usually implies more memory bandwidth as well, which translates to better effective transfer rates at less-than-maximum usage. I suspect this plays into the better performance of the 2gb card. Total vram usage depends on the size and level of compression of graphical resource elements being loaded into it. Some better optimized games (like GTA V it seems) handle this by loading less of and smaller sized resources into vram, and reducing the number of mip-map hierarchy levels used (= as the object gets closer to the camera, not going up from potato quality in such small increments your eyes can't see it, and instead going over in fewer more noticeable transitions), improving performance at the cost of visual fidelity. This works fairly well on 1080p and lower, and you're still left with the impression of unfettered performance when in reality you were actually looking at some potato quality models and textures for a split second there. Not all game engines do this as effectively however, and it depends on the quality settings as well. Normally compressed resources fit in vram just fine, but if the gpu needs to constantly keep loading new resources into a smaller capacity of vram in order to keep up, it can overburden the gpu, as I think we partly see from the performance of the 1gb card in comparison here, and sometimes it can cause flooding, which is when the framerate tanks as the resources that didn't fit into vram are offloaded onto system memory.
    It would be interesting to see GTA V footage from both cards side-by-side, to compare for any potential differences in level of detail and render distances, as well as to see some vram usage numbers.

    tbh, the 2gb framebuffer allows higher textures for no fps drop (low/medium - medium/high in most) if 2gb is close. And the reason some games are same fps, is simply because some game engines cut off distant textures or renders lower quality unoticably to drop vram usage to a doable amount for the 1gb card, which results in no fps drop.

    Depends on the game. All of the games/settings we're pretty nice to vram...try rottr on high/ultra or ghost recon wildlands. Still great vid :)!

    Typically, if you're CPU limited in a game then raising or lowering settings won't change the framerate much if at all. The same goes for upgrading the videocard, it won't help. That might be why GTA V showed no difference.

    Obviously the game will be less laggy with more vram, but mostly amd cards like rx 560 8gb makes no sense in front of rtx 2060 6gb.

    They need to make a motherboard with 6GB of Vram built in it, and eMMC with OS in it

    Hardware Unboxed did a test on how VRAM and amount of system RAM can affect framerates. You used 16GB RAM so it didn't affect the framerates too much. Test it with 8GB RAM then you'll see the difference. Hardware Unboxed came to a conclusion that if you have a 3GB VRAM GPU or less. you need 16GB RAM which is unfortunate because users who buy these GPU's have tight budgets so most likely they'll get 8GB RAM.

    Try the same test with only 8gb or 4gb of ram. I'm pretty positive(not absolutely) you'll see a bigger difference. both have a small memory buffer, so, theoretically, both need the ram to make for the lack of VRAM. either that or the gpu itself is so weak it doesn't use the total buffer it has! lol

    Vram doesn’t mean extra memory 99% of the time. Vram is how good of a resolution you can have. Textures and stuff. The better the texture the more demanding of Vram space.

    😇 thx for the video card test ✌️😏 its called System Ram Leeching, its been around forever, this is how laptops can play older lighter video games using only the crappy integrated graphics on the cpu or on the motherboard chipset, chkout the video below on utube, thats an extreme example, when the vram is full it then leeches off the system ram, like a parasite or vampire, of course that means system ram usage will go up a bit. Please note that for maximum leeching efectiveness you want the memory in dual channel and u want the memory sticks to be matching pairs, preferably u want 8GB of System Ram, wether its ddr2 or ddr3 or ddr4, because when ur playing newer games like ForTain its normal to be using 5GB of System Ram, also note if u only have 4GB of system ram you will get stuttering in games like ForTain because your starving it! so for 4GB of system ram computers sorry but u will need to look for older games to play, so research low spec gaming & retro gaming.
