    I live in North Central Iowa and our winters can also be unpredictable so in the last 3 months, I have been doing my winter stock up.
    I'm 71 years old and am retired.
    I live on a low Social Security check a month.
    I am blessed enough that I was able to get my monthly food plus stocking up.
    I was also blessed about 11 years ago to get a large upright freezer and I already had a small chest freezer.
    I now have them both stocked up with different meats, vegetables, and a few other things in them.
    Actually the only thing I could see that I would need is milk and bread throughout the month.
    I am going to buy some of those frozen loaves of bread that you let rise and bake.
    They come 5 to a package.
    I'm planning on getting them in the next couple of weeks.
    I haven't done my monthly shopping this month yet as I didn't need anything.
    I am running out of my liquid coffee creamer so I'll be going shopping soon.
    I do have my favorite creamer in powder for my winter stock up.
    I can always use that when I run out of the liquid.

      @@BeckyCreger-vs5ce it sounds like you have built an amazing pantry! What a great feeling of security. I stock evaporated milk that way I have something shelf stable and can always split it with water for cooking or I also use straight when needed for coffee. Thank you for sharing and watching!

    • @ruggedmountainhomestead
      @ruggedmountainhomestead  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ it has a little kick to it because of the type of peppers but I can’t eat real spicy things but I do enjoy this salsa. On a scale of 1-10 I would probably give it a 5 or 6.

    • @ruggedmountainhomestead
      @ruggedmountainhomestead  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ you can always mix the two together to calm some spice down if you find it’s too much for you. In the Mexican restaurants here they call it Christmas and it’s delicious as well.

    Please PLEASE make a video when you make the BlackBerry Jam. I made Blueberry jam last month but it was too sweet and too thick. Not sure what I did. Haven’t really put up jams in >40 years, so I’ve forgotten most everything. Thanks. I pressure canned some beef and chicken too; it was surprisingly easy. Nice Azure haul. TFS. We LOVE Azure. How will the chickens handle the upcoming Colorado cold? I know zero about chickens but am curious.

    • @ruggedmountainhomestead
      @ruggedmountainhomestead  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cyn4rest Hi there! I will definitely make a video for the blackberry jam. A lot of times a little lemon juice will cut the sweetness of blueberry jam. I used to make blueberry lemon. Canning meat is a game changer for sure! Love being able to throw something together for anything unforeseen. As for the chickens in the cold…couple of things. I selected breeds with small combs so there wouldn’t be danger of frostbite. Only the 2 leghorns have regular sized combs. I’ve been feeding them a good bit extra feed and treats (pumpkin, greens from the garden and sunflower seeds) so they’re a little extra fluffy for warmth. We also put a piece of insulation over the nest box area and we are using the deep bedding method for the coop and that alone will keep them warm. Chickens are able to regulate their own body temperature and they are out every morning running around even in the snow! That surprised me.

      @@cyn4rest without incident would be great but am hoping for a good snow season….we count on the snow to replenish the reservoirs and so we have a lesser chance of wildfires in the summer.

    • @ruggedmountainhomestead
      @ruggedmountainhomestead  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not at all! It’s wonderful! Our humidity level is usually always low unless it snows. We can work outside with just a long sleeve shirt when it’s 40 degrees outside. When we lived in VA and the humidity it was that bone chilling cold that always feels 15 degrees colder than what it is. It gets pretty cold here but the very low humidity makes it feel much different.
