The Riddler is one of the greatest and most consistently entertaining characters in the entire Arkham Series. In my opinion, these games have the best depiction of The Riddler outside the comics. Wally Wingert who voiced the character in all 4 games always delivered such an incredible performance that always managed to perfectly capture Riddler's obsessive personality, massive ego and superiority complex and it's honestly his voice I hear in my head when I read comics with Riddler.

Finding his trophies and riddles was only fun in Origins and Asylum, though, in City and Knight it just felt tedious and way too over done, and, personally, the worst part is how he just did/mostly did trophies instead of Riddles, should have called him "The Trophie Man"
@@GlitchingRobin After I intetogated enough Riddler informants it took me less than an hour to find all the trophies. And a disagree because easily the least enjoyable time to find his collectibles are is easily in Origins because the locations in or not well thought out and there is little to no reward for finding of them all unlike the other games. All you find is the first Riddler trophy.
@@The_Phantasm in case you forgotten, Riddler's canonical first appearance was in origins, of course they weren't thought out, he was only just starting his career, that's what made it fun, and nobody mentioned the time, regardless of the time Knight and City are annoying as hell to get, and like I said previously, why the hell is Riddler's whole thing trophies? That has nothing to do with Riddles and I feel they could have done a much better job with Riddler, and actually have his character revolve around Riddles instead of trophies

This specific Joker from the Arkham games is the Definitive version of the character to me

I always thought a film adaptation of this (if done right) could be a lot of fun
If they trimmed the fat and made it a four movie translation, that would be perfect. They could treat the first one like, essentially, an escape room. Instead of constant traversal of the asylum, every room would essentially be a boss fight with an iconic villain. It would be so good. I would even be open to them starting on Origins and making this the latter half of the first, or the second film entirely.
The comics, the animated series, the games, the villains, the movies, the character itself. Batman is an icon dated all the way back in 1939 to still be praised, you gotta love batman. And I believe out of all comics marvel and dc and whoever else batman has the best villains.
I've always thought that too it's one of the reasons why Batman is my favorite superhero.

A slight side track but within the realm; could you consider creating a reaction tribute to the late and amazing Kevin Conroy? On November 15th will be the first anniversary of his death. He was the sole reason I got into acting. I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's a bit underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation when the motion pictures are brought up. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)

Wait, you feel that Kevin Conroy is _underrated_ as Batman? ... I don't get it, who doesn't rate him at the number one voice actor when it comes to Batman/Bruce Wayne?
How could we rate him higher than we already do? From *Batman:TAS* (1992) to *Justice League: Action* (2018) he's voiced the most iconic versions of the character, and even got to play the Bat of Earth-99 in live action in the Arrowverse crossover *Crisis on Infinite Earths* (2020) ...
... and we still have *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* to look forward to next year!
And you _also_ feel like Mark Hamill is underrated as Joker? Like, ok, I'm sorry if I come across as pushy, but who/where are those people who rate them low down the totem pole when it comes to these 2?
We only ever hear the highest praise for these 2, they're the guys that the others have to live up to.

Amazing intro , you captured the essence of the game in 1 minute. Arkham Asylum started it all, a true Batman experience and captures the Gotham crazy atmosphere perfectly.
And incredible analysis, the intercom chime will always be stuck in my mind.

I bought the game at launch for brother but didn't play it til a few years later right before Origins was about to come out. I was just looking for something different to try and figured this was just it. I was immediately sucked in and played non stop until Origins hit. Asylum was also my 1st platinum. I wasn't even aiming for it, I just noticed that as I was about to beat hard mode and I only needed maybe 3 or 4 trophies to get the platinum. 100% platinum on the 3 Rocksteady games and its DLCs (plus all the offline trophies for Origins and its DLCs) is probably my greatest gaming achievement.
I always loved Batman, he fascinated me. I’ve watched old Batman movies, cartoon, and especially Batman Beyond when I was angsty teenager. In my early twenties I played Arkham Asylum. That was beginning of completely new level of obsession! Finding all those types and little tidbits of characters info sparked a desire to know absolutely everything!! Arkham Asylum was my gateway to reading comics 😊 I love this game

Sad part about this game. People try to turn their backs on it and make it look bad by comparing it to the future Arkham games that did their job in surpassing in a few categories.
Like I remember this guy saying AA was overrated but clearly played it way later. Like complained about the game looking too cartoonish which was suppose to as at the time the game was inspiration from the 90s Batman. Hell we had dumb stuff like lack of gadgets and freedom with Batman which was also BS as at the time this was the first game that made everyone legit feel like Batman.
Personally this and AC are my favorite games tied. I love AC for gameplay and story while AA will never have that atmosphere surpassed.
I mean, they kind of have a point, at least in some regard.
I don't see anyone defending Fallout 3 for laying literally *all* the groundwork for Fallout New Vegas to exist even though, arguably, FO3 was much more revolutionary in terms of game design as it did much more things that were considered new and innovative, even outpacing New Vegas in some areas like atmosphere and world-building. (Obsidian loves TELLING too much about the world rather than SHOWING it, which FO3 does a lot better. The story may have better writing in New Vegas, but the world building is actually not very good at all outside of dialog. FO3's dialog isn't as good but it sets up it's world with less of it, sprinking in elements that hint towards future story elements without explicitly having a character SAY it, like that computer you can find in Grayditch with that one old former Enclave guy talking about the resurgence of the Enclave in DC)
Keep in mind that I agree with YOU. I think earlier entries shouldn't be so heavily derided for small flaws that later games fixed because that's EXPECTED of a sequel, to fix the problems.
I'm not saying FO3 or Batman AA are better overall than their successors, but you do have a point about taking context into account when judging these games. I don't think it's fair to do 1 to 1 comparisons to their successors because they weren't designed with the hindsight of earlier entries and the feedback from them.
The way I see it, if the "worst" thing about an entry is that everything that came after was objectively better, then that means you did a near-perfect entry at the time. I consider that a compliment
Glad you’re including Origins in the line-up. Definition of UNDERRATED. It’s actually my favorite of the series. Will watch all your videos of the Arkham quadrilogy if/when you cover the rest.
I know City and later Knight improved and expanded upon all the mechanics Asylum brought, however Asylum was always my favorite of the franchise because it was a tighter experience. It had the best told story, 240 Riddles to solve might seem like a lot on paper, but by the time you're finished with the game you realize you don't have that many left to get and there's less aimless wandering around.
The draw to asylum is atmosphere for me it's still unmatched in superhero games but it's also the shortest which is why I always come back to this game.
Another thing about Arkham Asylum it started a new golden age for superhero games without this game we probably wouldn't have gotten the Injustice games, the Insomniac Spider man games, and the underrated Guardians of the Galaxy game.

Ehhh, to say that it ALONE started a renaissance of the superhero sandbox genre might be overstating it a little.
Keep in mind that InFamous AND Prototype also came out around the same time, fueling superhero game hype. Rightfully so, because those games are sick.
I think Batman AA had a lot to do with it, but let's not forget the fact that two NEW IP's also contributed to that hype.
@calebhall75 yeah perhaps I forgot about Infamous and Prototype those games definitely deserve the contribution for the superhero Renaissance for games. My apologies.

@@Eye_Of_Odin978True Infamous and Prototype may have contributed to the Superhero video game genre but the reason why Batman Arkham Asylum and series as a whole gets more recognition is because it's the 1st License game to do a proper Batman game that has inspired other developers to take license Superhero characters and bring them into the gaming universe. Without Asylum we wouldn't be having these type of discussions we're having now. The Batman Arkham series is the gold standard to make a Superhero game.
Batman: Arkham is one of the best Batman ever. Still have Arkham Asylum as the best one for the smaller enclosed setting and atmosphere. The freeflow combat was something else. Those Scarecrow sessions especially young Bruce Wayne Crime Alley. No wonder the game turned out great bringing back the key people from Batman: The Animated Series.
I literally just woke up after buying all 3 on Xbox for under 10 bucks last nite and was up all night.

Good purchase, although there IS a 4th one but it's up to you if you want to take a chance on Arkham Knight.

Just finished beating this game…I beat City, Origins, then Knight, and came back to this one…All are great expect for Knight…Too many GOTDAMN BATMOBILE MISSIONS

I love this game series and I cannot get over the fact that it’s implied in Knight that whilst you’re going through the Asylum, it is directly after the events of Death in the Family and Jason is merely moments away from you the entire time, Joker even makes reference to it if you play as Robin in a challenge map where he says “wait, didn’t I kill you already?”
This is the game that awakened my Batman obsession! I never would have started collecting comics if it weren’t for Arkham asylum and here i bought it just thinking the fighting looked cool.
Great video and great cameos at the end! Asylum is my favorite of the franchise, although City and Knight has improved a lot the gameplay. 4 amazing games in general, but Asylum is the goat

As soon as I'm done with Spider-Man 2, I think I'm jumping into this series (or at least the 3 Rocksteady games).
The entire series is phenomenal and the origin of the same sort of combat that we got in Spider-Man. Arkham origins is still an amazing game although it’s definitely not as good as the rocksteady trilogy but it’s still awesome to see the year one Batman of the Arkham verse, without any spoilers hes arguably at his most brutal in the series in terms of combat and how he goes about defeating and handling his enemies and it’s the only game in the series that lets you chill & train in the the bat cave
The games I always go back even after more than 10 years.

I love all the Arkham games, but something just hits different with Asylum. The atmosphere of it just feels so much creepier and more comic booky
In my opinion Batman Arkham Asylum and Bioshock displayed one of the best atmospheres in a video game.
The atmosphere and the tighter experience is what brings me back to asylum every year.
City and Asylum stand out especially in a world where everyone is competing to have the biggest open world while the arkham games focus on a small but detailed world. I'm always finding something new.

I smiled when I saw the title of this video! I’m obsessed with these games when I got my first video game system (Xbox 360) this was the first game I got! (Arkham City). They’re just so perfect there’s nothing I would change about the first two. Well maybe the boss fight with the Joker in Asylum. Still at 10/10 game tho!

I go a few ways on which game I like best (you could say it’s multiple choice)… “Asylum” has the best atmosphere, and IMO *the* best vocal performance we’ve heard from Mark Hamill as the Joker. “City” has the best gameplay overall. “Origins” has the best boss battles and the best portrayal of Bane we’ve seen outside of the comics. “Knight”… well, driving the Batmobile is addictive. After all, Arkham is for the criminally insane. ;)

When I was younger and played every game as they came out, I used to feel that City or Origins were better (I didn't love Knight, even if the graphics and gameplay are of course awesome). But now that I've replayed them all and revisited this one... yeah, Asylum is definitely my favourite. It just rocks so much.
I liked the fact that u first demonstrated some of the greatness of those games before talking about them.

@@DiamondBlade11 Never had a PS3. When I played City and Origins, those were for the Wii U, and when I finally got a PS4, I got Knight. For some reason, I just never had "getting Asylum" high on my priority list.

You can learn all the story events in AC using context clues and it is the weakest Arkham game gameplay wise.
I love Batman Arkham origns, i thought blackgate was okay, i liked Arkham asylum, i love Arkham city and I absolutely hated Arkham knight.

This game is a look into batman as a whole not my favorite my favorite will always be arkham city but it is certainly not a bad game
I understand why people throw shade at the final boss fight -- it doesn't seem like a good Joker plot at all. But by then the Joker plot is over; Batman ruined it. (J complains about this 'through' Scarface as the plot finale kicks in.) The Joker's just doing an improvisation riff with what he's got left over.
The Joker boss fight is ridiculous but important because it caused him dying in Arkham City

Arkham city is the best batman game. Arkham Asylum was more of a tutorial. City was well polished, you are the batman in city.
I love how Scarecrow is used in this game. He doesn't care about Joker! He's got plans of his own!

Asylum has best story and good game play. City has the perfect middle great story (Asylum is better and great game play. Origins has a good story but cut and paste game play (nothing new but city was good gameplay)

@@robertrogers074 No because the way the map of city was designed it can't be used buildings tight together narrow roads places blocked off a whole entire district cut off from the rest of the map because the roads got blown up during the story. No way the batmobile could get through the city. Even the developers said it isn't a driving game when asked about the batmobile in Arkham City

Game play for asylum sucks, story is great, but city has both story and gameplay. Knight beats them both for gameplay but looses in story. Origins has best boss fights

It has flaws but I think people get too caught up on "muh vehicle missions" when realistically Batman has been seen using cars in his media for years now.
It's not out of left field or something like most people claimed. I really liked it, even if the story was arguably the weakest of the four.

I don’t wanna be that guy but, I straight up hate Arkham Asylum 💀 I think the controls are clunky as hell. The setting is boring and drab. And the combat feels like shit. It’s just outdated.
That’s just you being used to what City and Knight became. Asylum is my favorite because it’s the most concise. I don’t play it as an open world action adventure, I play it like a metroidvania. Out of all of the games, it’s the most believable game that could be a story taken out of the comics. City didn’t make sense because why would you turn the city into a prison, and knight was just too large scale and melodramatic. And if you really sit down and play the series again, ALL of the games are clunky.
This is not it. That title rightfully goes to Arkham City.

While I love Arkham City, the vibe and feel that Asylum gave makes it the best in my eyes when it comes to “Batman games” like it’s hard to explain but I classify it like City is the better video game, but Asylum is the bette Batman game. It was creepy, dark, scary etc etc. the villains felt like a threat and all fit the setting incredibly well. It was gritty and kept you on your toes and the small setting made things feel more claustrophobic and tense. It captured the darker aspects of Batman comics perfectly. City was great dont get me wrong, but imo it didn’t capture the essence of Batman like Asylum did. It felt like a comic book come to life.
