Eat your heart out. 3,000 miles a year for the last 8 years. The 89 year old man that sold his TOY to me actually cried as I was driving away. His wife made him sell it because he didn't drive it enough. It is a GEM. He never used the radio or CD player. He didn't even know he had an alarm on it. It does need a turbo though. Even though it's an automatic. I live at 2,200 feet and it's hard on a non supercharged or non turbo engine. I go past 4,000 feet often. You lose 10% every 1,000 feet. This was my first vehicle when I was in high school. I lived on the coast and it was perfect for taking to the beach with a couple of friends. Surfboards fit perfect on the roof racks, and while bigger trucks we’re getting stuck in the sand, this terrain was no match for the Baja.

It's a well known lie in NASIOC forums for the "210 hp" figure, Subaru gave the same figure for the Forester XT's of that era too. Dynoed they make more around 240 and with matching torque figures is why you think it feel faster...because the engine makes more power than subaru says.
Buddy of mine in our Subaru Club had a 550HP Baja. It was absolutely wonderful!!! When I got my STI I really wanted a Baja Turbo but the STI was just too cool.
Yeah, for the numbers its really a range from regular cars up to exotics, but when he's talking about whether it feels fast or not, its more of a real world/for what it is kinda deal.
@Wayne Zurowski when I swapped the engine the Baja's odometer read 150k Miles unfortunately I has to use it for work for a while because my daily was in the shop I added around 28k in like 6 months now she's at 180k

We love our Baja Turbo and we are constantly asked by Subaru dealers to sell it to them as they are in demand now that they are no longer produced. My only complaint is that being 6' 4" that it is a little cramped getting into/out of/and driving for me. But that is true of all the Subarus I have driven.
@@ripwilbert7159 Funny you would hear that. They haven't even brought back the WRX wagon in N. America which has an arguably larger market. Can't imagine reason Subaru/Toyota execs would say "let's make a quirky truck that doesn't fit in our lineup and will only sell 500 units in 5 years". I do miss quirky subarus. Time to jump on them, rebuild the engines so they don't blow a gasket, and sit on them until they are COLLECTORS items. Bummer since this is perfect for building out a unique overland rig.

Yeah it's anything I could ever want from a car. Not sure if I'd actually buy it, but on paper it's kind of perfect. Sure a third seat in the rear would be nice and groceries will be stolen from the truck bed where I live, but other then that what's not to like?
I'm a Subaru addict. I own a 2004 Legacy (same gen as the Baja) , which I turboed. A few months ago I had the opportunity to buy one with a blown engine. I was about to buy it when I discovered the bed is too small to fit my bike 😭 I still have my Legacy wagon.
ucf1999 I’m saying it looks like a knockoff even though it was the original. I’m not saying they were copying off them. I used “Chinese knockoff” as in it looks like a poor quality Chinese knockoff, as China copies cars a lot. And even though it was made in 2006, it still shares some qualities from its 1990’s outback counterpart. I know a lot of modern and old cars share the same body shape, but this truck looks like something out of a Frankenstein movie, although I have to admit it looks fun to drive.

A few years ago I bought my 06 Baja Turbo manual, and it's everything I expected and wanted. I've hauled big things, appliances, and tons of small things and have never felt like I wished I had a full truck in the few times i couldn't haul something. Anyways, even up to 06, they still did two-tone paint jobs. Mine is black and silver! It's a darling little ute.
Yesterday while watching the FJ cruiser video, in the doug score comparison you added a subaru baja. I was extremely confused, specially the fact that i didn't find the video!! Doug, you made my day.
The Baja was a callback to the Brat, which was Subaru’s answer to the El Camino and Ranchero, though the Brat had seats in the bed. I really wish GM would bring the El Camino back to the states, especially with crossovers being so popular. It would be a crossover pickup, with better handling and fuel economy than a regular pickup.
@Brandon Sullivan That was my first thought. AMC even did a sportier coupe (although the "sportier" part is up for debate) and a sedan version. Nothing conceptually new here. It's just that Subaru got the timing better - AMC was too far ahead of the curve. LOL
I would yell at Paul Hogan's Outback commercials at the time. "World's First Sport-Utility Wagon" my a$$! Like a kid I wished an AMC Eagle would drive through their recording sessions & haunt their dreams. Hated Subaru for a time. Sorry, I'm an AMC fan you know. :-)
What about the old Subaru GL/Leone Wagon? It was AWD and lifted. It's basically the grand daddy of the Outback and the Crosstrek. That goes back several years before the AMC Eagle.
Totally... I'm about to look up used Bajas in my area to price them out, considering if I should sell my '13 STi hatch, lol. It's still pretty darn utilitarian though being a 5 door.
Why wasn't this car sold in Australia? I don't live there and I'm not from there but it makes more sense as the only foreign market Subaru should sell this car.
"Back in the 90's Subaru invented a new segment with the Outback, a tall AWD station Wagon." The 1980's and AMC Eagle would like to have a word with you Doug.
12 years with mine and I still won't let it go. Fun to drive because of the few extra ponies under the hood. it's dependable, and fits anywhere and load some stuff in the back like a washer or a stove. It was shipped to Puerto Rico and it spend the rest of its days there.

Subaru was definitely on to something here... As pickup trucks get larger with beefier engines and higher prices, the small, cheap truck (possibly car based) will be perfect for a heavily-used light-duty load, as you said in your take on the Baja on Cars and Bids right now.
It does not take tools to remove the bed extender. You turn halfway and pull up. Also International Scouts had the same license plate feature.
Classic Minis had the same license plate feature too - starting 1959. Not exactly a new idea from Subaru. :-)
I know what you're talking about because we had one on a nissan frontier a while back. Idk if he's wrong on that, it might just be the nissan that had that pull out feature.
The original 2 door Range Rover also had this in 1974.

I have one in almost perfect condition. The Subaru guys drooled over it. It's in Garnet Red Pearl. Extremely rare if not one of a kind. The Subaru guys have NEVER seen one. 58,000 miles. Mine was just aligned and it feels like it's on rails. It's scary how well it handles. Rural windy roads. Fugget about it!! 225 60 17'S. Please anybody let me know if you have seen a red one. You should have driven it on bumpy gravel dirt ranch roads. It is amazingly smooth riding and I have yet to have anyone in a car or truck keep up with me on one of these roads going up to my buddies ranch. We love our Baja Turbo and we are constantly asked by Subaru dealers to sell it to them as they are in demand now that they are no longer produced. My only complaint is that being 6' 4" that it is a little cramped getting into/out of/and driving for me. But that is true of all the Subarus I have driven.
Subaru Baja is amazing! It is one of Subaru’s unique vehicles. Hopefully they’ll bring it back. :(
Subaru didn't have assembly plant in Indonesia, which make them rarely driven here and has maintenance cost as same as luxury cars due to this.

The Baja was a callback to the Brat, which was Subaru’s answer to the El Camino and Ranchero, though the Brat had seats in the bed.
