What about the Arcana Heart series? They're basically like if you mix a Moe anime like Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and turn it into a fighting game.
Harada will probably block any or all attempts at possible bad spin offs of his beloved franchise. His collaboration with Capcom's SF X Tekken and its scummy DLC and gem system left a sour taste in his mouth that the closest thing we got to their version of Tekken X SF was Akuma in Tekken 7.
Something that is somewhat related to this topic but I remember when I saw Snake and Bayonetta was in SSB series and while there fun welcome addition to the SSB Series I will admit they kind of stick out on the roster because with Snake while Sakurai did incredible job incorporating him in SSB it is a little strange seeing him chokehold and use military weapons on colorful Nintendo characters and Bayonetta to this day I’m surprised how they manage to get her a Smash Bros despite coming from a hard M game series.
You’re missing Flying Dragon on the N64. The game basically has two different versions of Flying Dragon on the cart, (more given some of the other options) there’s a standard version of Flying Dragon on it and an SD version of Flying Dragon, with each version having its own unique characters as opposed to SD mode being them making the heads bigger and shrinking down the characters models. It’d be kind of like if Capcom releases Street Fighter 3, and Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix was an alternate Street Fighter 3 you could select at the opening.
Man, I had _thought_ there was a game that did something like that but couldn't remember the name and just figured I was thinking of something in a completely different genre. Feel a little silly now, that would've been perfect for this video, but thank you for bringing it to my attention!
It might just be me being so wrestle-pilled and seeing something that isn't there, but I think Baifu's design might be a nod to Jinsei Shinzaki/Hakushi. Also I like the little intro cards you made with the intros, really stepping up your editing game!
One you didn't mention is Pocket Rumble. It's an indie game that's a spiritual successor to the Neo Geo Pocket games (Snk vs Capcom Match of the Millennium in particular). It's cute, fun, and a nice homage to that style
What a great episode. This belongs in a museum. Funnily enough, I've been craving the old handheld fighting games lately. First time I've ever wanted to go back to play those, as I've only ever played a KOF game on GameBoy and Power Rangers on the Game Gear back in the day. Power Rangers on GG is top tier when it comes old school handheld fighters, btw. Not sure it would belong on this list, as it wasn't trying to be "cute", but it definitely succeeded as a fighter with a great single-player mode. I have it installed on my modded Switch right now. Been planning on revisiting this truly hidden gem.
@@TheSeventhForce Keep in mind I was a little kid! I've seen a couple reviews of it lately, and they shared the same sentiment that I did as a kid. The PR games have good fighting mechanics. Beyond of what was expected at the time from the Game Gear. That floating 8-directional d-pad on the original hardware made those special moves fun and easy to execute.
Another great video. The nostalgia is bittersweet because of remembering playing, buying, and even just listening to music tracks of the games, but with my birthday being Sunday, it hurts to be old enough to see or play all of these when they came out in either arcades or ports. Keep up the awesome work. Can't wait for the next vid.
This is a really fun subgenre of fighter that I wish could make a return. And I actually didn't even know about GG Petit, I legitimately hope one day we can get some WonderSwan rereleases/collection like they did for the NG Pocket Color. Also, I do distinctly remember playing Super Gem Fighter as an unlockable bonus in the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology on PS2 and doing the whole pointing at the TV meme when I saw Ryu, Nina and Peco in that one stage... and playing as Felicia just because she transformed into Megaman in that one combo xD
I think the main issue with the Wonderswan library in particular is that a lot of it is made up of RPGs and games with a lot of text. Sure, they could be localized, but I can't imagine the market for an endeavor like that being profitable enough to justify it. I'm honestly still (pleasantly) surprised SNK re-released most of their NGPC stuff. I think a few ports of Wonderswan stuff did make it over to GBA though; I know the GBA ports of Final Fantasy I, II and IV are based on their Wonderswan Color versions.
@@TheSeventhForce I was more thinking ports for stuff like the exclusive Klonoa and Megaman titles, but yeah, RPGs are a huge part of the console's library, and yeah, they're just not profitable to localize for old games with a nieche audience
The Klonoa game would be honestly a really neat pull (along with the GBA games) but that series seems so cursed sales wise that I almost don't blame Namco for not even bothering (Did my part and imported a physical copy of the Klonoa remasters, though) Namco in general seems kind of allergic to retro releases outside of Arcade Archives releases these days, though.
The only games I haven't played from this video are Virtua Fighter Kids, Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butōden, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, and BlayzBloo: Super Melee Brawlers Battle Royale. I like that Dural's brain is a fish! 🐟 🤣
The Kart Kombat designs were pulled from the previous game's Puzzle Kombat, which used that art style because it was a direct rip off of Puzzle Fighter in style and gameplay
Gem fighter mini mix has to be one of my favorite fighters out there just for how fun and cute it is. I played hours of it with my cousin in the fighting collection. the gem level up mechanic bcus it makes each fight a scramble.
I almost forgot about Virtua Fighter Kids. That was probably yet another misguided attempt by AM2 to extend the lifespan of their fighting engine. Of course, the best fighter that came out of their VF engine was Dead Or Alive.
That was a topic i never heard anyone in the fighting game community talk about much before, it's really incredible Also you should definitely consider making a capcom vs legacy on yuri sakazaki next time
I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet (I think) Rakugakids on the N64 is so fucking adorable. It reminds me of like a kid version of Marvel Super Heroes with its Magic Style button scheme. You would be surprised how perfect the N64 controller is for 6 button fighters The animation to Rakugakids is phenomenal and the characters are all cute, Cools Roy being my favorite Shame it never got a NA release, so I had to settle for a Japanese copy, but worth it. It's one of my favorite fighting games
While not having the chibi or super deformed style, I think the og Smash Bros for the N64 fits perfectly on this topic. I don't know how to explain it, but to this day it still holds a charm that no other game in the franchise has. From the character's expressions and animations, specially on the victory screens, the goofy ahh sound effects and OST and even the intro of the game itself made of this one of my favorite games in the whole figting game genre. Just merely because of how it looks and sounds.
32:36 Hehe, I thought the same thing. 😅 This was an interesting compilation of this obscure/niche area of games! This’ll never happen again, and, as you say, I'm sure it was cheaper to make these games then. That and game conglomerates play things safe nowadays. Love the title cards! Thanks! And yeah, I've definitely experienced instances like that growing up. Wasn't a _regular_ occurrence in my life by any stretch, but I can definitely recall at least a few times it's happened.
Its so funny watching this video because it helped me realize how Chibi art style will go through different phases of appealing/unappealing in my life. As a young kid, I really couldn't stand it because I thought it just looked weird. In my mid and late teens I thought it was pretty cool because of how playful and colorful it appeared. It kinda phased out as a young adult likely because I started to appreciate the complexities or nuances of other styles but now in adulthood, I'm more neutral and like it most as an option rather than a preference. Who knows how that will change later on. Long live Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo.

Mortal Kombat Deception also has SD Mortal Kombat characters in the form of Puzzle Kombat, a mode that's a take on Puzzle Fighter. Flying Dragon for N64 also has two separate modes of play one cartoony and one normal. And no it's not a one off, Hiryu No Ken is a long running series seemingly going back all the way to NES. I grew up with Bloody Roar and they had special opions you could unlock the could give you a big head or big hands or kidsifly the body and you could mix and match these options so effectively you could play your own "Bloody Roar kids" if you wanted
Well this was a welcome surprise, I would definitely not have guessed chibi style fighters was what the community post was referring to, but it's a cool subject to talk about imo. I haven't actually played Pocket Fighter yet despite having Capcom Fighting Collection, but I really need to do that, it just looks so charming and fun, didn't know about the PS1 exclusive "Maker" mode though, now I honestly want to get that version even more, (Despite already owning CFC) and considering I want to try and collect for the Wonderswan, since it's such an interesting handheld, I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for that port, and GG Petite 1 and 2. Never forget that Sakura called Saikyo style re!@%&ed in the OG version, never forget. (Also, that card battle mode in PF Wonderswan is literally just Tekken Card Challenge, the Tekken game released for the Wonderswan lol) I also absolutely *adore* the style for the Neo Geo Pocket fighting games as well, I want those collections so bad, you have no idea. I love how the sprites look so much. (Wasn't there also an indie fighter that uses the art style for it's sprites as well? I think I remember seeing something like that from the indie scene) And two other things, 1, you mentioning VFK is just reminding me how badly I want SEGA to just make some sort of Saturn equivalent to Sonic's Ultimate Genisis Collection, or just a SEGA arcade fighter collection. (You have some of them working in an emulator in a game engine already Sega COME ON!) And 2, I genuinely want to play BlayzBloo Super Melee Brawlers for only three very simple reasons, 1, there is so little coverage for the game it's not even funny, 2, just to see if it's even any good, and 3, because it lets me play as chibi Taokaka from the Teach Me Ms. Lichi and Help Me Professor Kokonoe skits.
Yeah, the card games are pretty similar, lol. I think the main difference is that you can't actually control what you play out of your hand in the Tekken one And the indie game you're thinking of is Pocket Bravery! I actually meant to shout that one out in the video as well, but I guess it slipped my mind. I'll find another opportunity to mention it in the future.
@@TheSeventhForce That's weird, I don't know if it's actually Pocket Bravery, I could swear I saw another game with a similar art style to the NGP games, but it didn't look like Pocket Bravery did, instead it had sprites closer to the actual Neo Geo Pocket ones where they were white with a color that matched the actual character designs... Am I going crazy or something? because I remember something like it that wasn't PB.
Pocket fighter also has another difference. In the arcade version, there is a way to knock your opponent around the world and they come crashing from the other side of the screen. This does not appear in the ps1 version. In the console version you can do a mega super movie where you glow like a super saiyan and release the large gems from your body....i think its like a super counter. This does not appear in the arcade version.
The latter is Mega Crush and that one actually is in the arcade version! You press all three buttons to do it; You can see it at 12:43 in the video w/ the Capcom Fighting Collection version of the game (Which uses the unedited arcade ROM) Definitely right about the around the world mechanic, though, that one was definitely omitted from the PS1 port. Probably should've mentioned that in the video!
@@CJinMono I mean, being a PS1 spinoff game that only released in one country kind of makes it obscure relative to most other games on the list. Same with GG Petit.
I have never owned a Saturn, but my local Toy Vault (New England-based retro game store) has a copy of Virtua Fighter Kids for I believe around 50 or so dollars. Side question, is Shenmue worth it? Been thinking about getting it.
$50 is actually the average price for a complete copy of the game on the secondhand market, so if it has the case and manual, I'd say go for it, if you're interested. And Shenmue is absolutely worth it. There really aren't many games quite like it.
@@TheSeventhForce Noted! I'll make sure to get around to buying and playing it. I've recently gotten my hands on DOA2, Sonic Adventure & SEGA Rally. Haven't quite played much of the latter 2 though.
