Here I am in a suburb, but someday I will have a hobby farm, and Meishans will be the first pigs I get. Thank you for the good explanation and introduction to this breed. I like how docile they are.
Prices vary greatly depending on location, gender, age, etc. With numbers still so low and a growing interest in Meishans, this is becoming a premium pig breed, similar to Kune Kunes or IPPs in price. But reach out to a breeder near you if you want to talk specifics! www.meishanbreeders.com/meishan-pig-breeder-locator/
Check out the Meishan breeder locator to find someone near you! www.meishanbreeders.com/meishan-pig-breeder-locator/ There are breeders all of the US now, so hopefully there is someone near you who can share the Meishan love. Thanks for watching!
Hello… are you still interested in a breeding pair of Meishan’s? Depending on your state… you can google the AMBA which stands for the American Meishan Breeders’ Association. On their website… there is a breeder locator listed by each state… whereas you will find Certified Registered Breeders. I too have been raising Meishans’ for several years here in northern Maryland @ the Happy Shack Homestead…. After having been involved with Meishans’… I would never raise any other breed. No other pig compares to them. Extremely docile in nature.. easy to handle…. No aggressive tendencies what so ever.. easy on the land… foraging on pasture makes for keeping feed costs down. I wish you luck in finding you a nice breeding pair of Meishans’. One bit of advice… make sure you are getting registered stock. There have been several folks on Facebook & Craigslist selling Meishans’ but they aren’t registered. It’s best to deal with a breeder from the AMBA … this guarantees you will be getting purebred registered stock. Take care & stay well.. 👩🌾🌾🌻✌️
Thanks for watching! Our farm is in north Texas, but if we are too far from you, there are breeders all across the US. Take a look at the Meishan breeder locator to find a farm near you! www.meishanbreeders.com/meishan-pig-breeder-locator/
Just discovered this breed and have done loads of research. Which line are your pigs from. I’m having a challenge finding purebred breeding stock meishan pigs in my area. It seems to be saturated with a good deal of crossbred in the surrounding area here.
You must be in Florida! There's the purebred Meishan, then there's the "Florida Meishan" - a heavily crossbred pig that has some amount of Meishan in it. And Florida is FLOODED with Meishan crosses. (You might be somewhere else, but Florida has become a bit of a joke in the Meishan community because of how bad the crosses have gotten down there.) If you want to find a quality breeder who can get your truly purebred lines, check out the AMBA breeder locator. It is a complete listing of all the breeders in the US who keep registered and purebred Meishans. www.meishanbreeders.com/meishan-pig-breeder-locator/ Thanks for watching and commenting! I hope you find a good breeder near you. These pigs are AWESOME!!!

I am located in Northern Maryland New Day Farm here & fellow breeder knows what she is talking about. You’ll want to steer clear of unregistered stock. We breeders’ work very hard as a team in a joint effort in maintaining the bloodlines in keeping them pure. I wish you well in finding an unrelated breeding pair. Take care… 👩🌾🌻🌾✌️

Hello… If you decide to go with this breed.. you won’t be sorry. They are one of the sweetest breeds of hogs I’ve ever raised. So gentle & easy to handle. Two main reasons: 1. China doesn't like to share. As far as I know, these pigs have only ever been allowed out of China one time, in 1989 to 3 US research facilities. Even then, they only exported 99 pigs for those research studies. So spreading to the rest of the world has never even been an option. 2. The "fat is bad" fad of the 1970-80s really killed good pork production. When the government recommended eating more carbs and less fats in 1977, the response in the pork industry was to selectively breed "white meat" pigs. This is the typical light pink pork that is found in stores across the US now. Lard pigs (like the Meishan) have ALL been dwindling since then, with the low-fat, light-colored breed pigs like Yorkshires making up a huge majority of the pork in our country. It's a huge loss, because most people don't even know what good pork tastes like anymore, as they have never known anything different than tasteless, dry pork. But thankfully the science is starting to change minds on consuming healthy fats, so lard breed pigs are slowing gaining in popularity once again. Thanks for watching!!
They are! They will definitely need good shelter and warm, dry bedding. But Meishans really do great in a variety of climates, even those with extreme temperatures. There is a breeder in PA near Harrisburg, and another on the PA/MD border. But there are even several breeders north of there in VT and WA state!
@@NewDayFamilyFarmHello… that’d be me at the Maryland Pennsylvania border. 7 miles south of Gettysburg. Nina.. @ the Happy Shack Homestead. 🙋♀️ I have no problems what so ever with my Meishans’ during colder months. I bring the majority into the barn & any due to farrow out during the winter months. … but before I do… I clean & power wash all the stalls. Bleaching all. Allow a few days for the concrete flooring to dry well. Cover the interior walls with a barrier. Closing up any air gaps. I Use very deep bedding & add as I go throughout the winter. As you may know… pigs poop & pee in the same spot… I remove it as needed throughout the winter to avoid build up & diseases. I’ve never had any issues with my Meishan’s freezing. Water freezes yes.. Meishan’s.. no. First time gilts due to farrow out.. I do use a heat lamp for those in that situation. Others’ stay on pasture with smaller shelters using the same deep bedding system. They will huddle together for warmth. One thing I do notice… they seem to drink lots more water throughout the winter season. If I can be of any help to either one of you.. by all means… I’d be more than happy to help in any way I can. My info is on the AMBA website under the breeder locator section. To date I have about 41+/- Meishan’s. If these pigs are disease and parasite resistant as well as prolific breeders why are they endangered?
