Follow along as a family of city slickers who are trying to farm in rural Texas experience the good, the bad, and the ugly of raising animals, crops, and their kids.
The WATER is FROZEN 🥶️ (Keeping animal waters during winter)
We struggle every winter with keeping our animal water bowls unfrozen - BUT hopefully now we have a solution!

You’re so sweet. I love watching you. Your children are adorable and so precious. Your rabbits are so beautiful. ❤❤❤
You sure have some cute supervisors! And you are not the only one who makes more work by trying to do less work. I do it all the time! 😂
I was using WoodPrix instructions to make it and I did it already :)
When it comes time to "harvest," do you do it yourself, or do you take them to a place that processes them for you? What is that process like? I'm thinking of starting my own homestead, and any information is greatly appreciated.
I do all of the processing myself. We started out using a local butcher to process for us, but switched for several reasons: 1. it's a good survival skill to have 2. butchering fees get very expensive very quickly 3. I prefer knowing my animals were never stressed by traveling to a butcher shop There are hundreds of excellent tutorials all over TH-cam for butchering various animals. And the more you do it, the more tips and tricks you will pick up. Best of luck!!
I personally find chickens easier than Rabbits.
I think it definitely depends on your setup which is easier. For our farm, chickens were just a lot of work. And the rabbit colony is nearly hands-off. Thanks for watching!
4:34 What breed of sheep is that? They are so uniquely coloured! I'm also surprised as how short their wool is!
They are American Blackbelly sheep, and they actually have super dense hair rather than wool! We absolutely LOVE them!
I chose ducks over chickens, and everyone always asks why we don't have chickens, lol. We keep rabbits, ducks, and quail on our ministead 😊
I am right there with you!
I love my rabbits!! We still eat a lot of chickens but raise Rabbits at home. Rabbit noodle soup and BBQ rabbit is our favorite. Theyre so easy! Its the winter that stressed me out since theyre more fragile with the water situation in the cold. Otherwise super easy. We even have all their dropping land in the chicken run and then shovel it out a few times a year. It doesnt smell because of the woodchips and healthy dirt underneath absorbing urine. Then we use all those droppings plus the chicken coop droppings (also using deep litter method) in the gardens. Sooooo easy!
Oooh! Have you heard of Joel Salatin's raken (rabbit+chicken) house? It sounds just like what you described!
@NewDayFamilyFarm I have! That's where I got the idea for open bottom hutchs. So smart and less space in my small yard for animals 😄
You have a good point. It’s got me thinking. I just rewatched this with my husband. Maybe this year just goats and ducks…and quail…and 2 turkeys 😂 Maybe I just agree with you in theory 😬
Hahaha, animal math is real! I just want one of everything (and then they need buddies... so probably a dozen each 🤣)
I totally get the whole "I want chores to be quick and easy" thing! I don't have 5 kids but there are other things that I want/have to do besides chores. I try to streamline chores so that they take the least amount of time without skimping on care. (especially in the winter because I do live where the air hurts your face most winters) My goal is that it should take approximately 15 - 30 minutes (in the winter, spring it takes longer because of milking chores) to do chores - depending if I have to fill water tanks. Now, those mornings that I milk the cow (she has a calf so I don't HAVE to milk everyday) it takes a bit longer. I love how your pens are set up with the alley in between that looks like a tractor would fit in if you needed.
I LOVE that!!
Oh my gosh, I can't believe how big those lambs got. They are beautiful and those bunnies are adorable. What a great life.
Bruno is getting so big! ❤
Marshel
It's wonderful to see you again! So glad you're all feeling better. Looking forward to some babies! ❤ p.s. I'm usually lost without a calculator! 😂
So glad you are feeling better. Blessings of light and health to you and your family.
I LOOKED IT Up YES SHEEP and goats do cross..YIKES YOU HAVE A GOSHE.😂😂😂😂😂
She looks half goat. Ive never seen a sheep with markings on the face like a goat. Are you shure shes not half goat? Kind of like half zebra and half horse it does happen ...i think
She will continue gaining remember sheep eat grass goats prefer brows like alfalfa stems
I always only fed alfalfa dairy cow feed. No wonder my doelings weighed 360 lbs at 15 mo.old and th3y were always very big from birth to adulthood. But i had big Boer goats
I was wondering where you guys went.😂😂😂 Good to see you back , glad to know your feeli g better
Haha our goats do the same thing in the hay. I guess the best must be in the middle. Your goats look fantastic!! Can't wait to see those babies. I'm so glad you are all feeling better now. Thank you for all the information on the mineral buffet. Ive thought about doing that so they can pick what they need. Sounds like it might be a good thing to try on our farm as well.
My guess is too 2
We had badly managed rabbit colonies when I was a kid. Just for pets, started with medium sized checkered (=black&whites) and two slightly bigger french angoras (a white and a blue). They just bred amongst themselves, children and parents all mixed up. They liked digging tunnels to birth in, rather than use the bedded "house". Mostly the first we knew of a litter was when the bunnies had fur already and started exploring outside their tunnel. They were very skittish, so catching the offspring to separate or cull them was difficult. Our mouser cat picked off many of the week-old bunnies, probably the reason we weren't overrun by hundreds of rabbits😅 Cat ignored the adult buns which were about cat sized. Our last rabbit dug its way out of the enclosure many times, and eventually enjoyed the whole summer free-ranging before disappearing come autumn. I suspect overrun by car, it was a black bunny... though some years there was fox or raccoon dog sightings so maybe something ate it.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all and yours.. ❤ ang 🫂 from the Big Mo
