    The method I use, avoids, flooding the engine, which eventually leads to running down your battery

    Just bought a 1981 PA32R-301! It needs some minor fixes but what I really feel like I’m missing is the original POH. I’ve downloaded one and it indicates under Normal Procedures that I turn on the fuel pump and turn on the engine with the fuel pump on and then the procedure goes to Hot Start, never indicated “fuel pump off”. I have very few hours in Saratoga’s, but what I’ve always seen done is mixture rich, fuel pump one for aprox 5 seconds, mixture cutoff, fuel pump off, crank to start, engine starts, immediately mixture full rich.
    What am I missing in the poh that indicates something completely different?

      I own a 1980 SP non turbo. 1.Cold start..everything forward, pump on until fuel flow needle flickers then pump off. Throttle back to cracked, leave mixture rich. Starts in a few blades.
      2. Starting shortly after running eg after a short fuel stop. Do not adjust controls. Turn key and when it fires then mixture rich or atleast over halfway.
      3. Hot start...this is where you have been stopped for an hour or so. You do not know if 2 works or it is a hot start. So try method two first. If that fails then it is a hot start...Throttle forward mixture forward. pump on till flicker then pump off. Throttle cracked 1/2 inch, mixture cutoff. Turn key and when it fires mixture rich. The key to all of this is to know your dual mag is in good shape...that's critical.

      @@tb2919 Thanks for the detailed info! A couple of days ago the mags were giving us problems (bad coils). Just ordered 2, so I will be trying this out shortly. Thanks again!
