The reason in piper aircraft for verifying the panel lights rotator switch is OFF, is because when it's set to ON, the three green lights for the landing gear are dimmed, as to not blind you at night. So imagine someone flew the airplane last night, forgot to turn it off and you're taking the airplane during the day today. The three greens will be dimmed and might be hard to see even tho everything is working properly. That's what you're verifying.
The other thing about checking that the lightbulb is burned. Sure extras are nice. But what you really want is a lightbulb you know for sure is working, so the better way to do it, is take one of the lightbulbs that is showing down and locked for another gear strut. IE nose is off, and the mains are down and locked. Take one of the mains and place it in the nose socket. If it turns on, you know your nose light bulb was burned and the gear is fine.

Happened to me last month hahaha. Set the gear down, heared and felt it going down, but no lights. Went around and another pilot confirmed it was down. Landed and after landing I figured it out

You are legend. What I need most for my CPL flight test which is coming soon. I've practiced it in the air but never went as much as detailed.
    Thank you

Great video thanks. I'm flying the arrow at the moment.

Yawing of the aircraft to get a wheel lock is not achieved through air flow,. The wheels are heavy and are like rather the end of a pendulum. Rocking the plane relies on the inertia of the wheel as the plane slews away from it to lock it. Thus the yaw should be abrupt. If it was air pressure the SOP would advise yaw and increase airspeed as necessary. Otherwise useful and thanks.

I was thinking about the airspeed as well during the video... I was like well if that's the case I wonder why they wouldn't increase airspeed a bit in a dive? Thanks for the information. I'll think about it as airflow and the pendulum effect of the wheel to help me remember which way to rock and yaw the plane for which landing gear might be stuck.

Testing the lights with the gear handle up....ugh.

Yeah if the point is to recycle the gear, then I think he should have put the gear switch back down

I would not suggest practicing emergency landing gear if there is no emergency. Going through the procedure is good to practice but not actually drop the gear.
I have had someone perform this with a perfectly working aircraft and the nose wheel didn't come down and they were forced to crash. Put it on stands and practice.

If it doesn’t work with the drop, don’t you just pull the drop lever up, and deploy as normal.

And now that this video exists there is no need to practice it IRL. Just watch the video a couple of times and practice it dry.
