Clear pronunciation & pace, good volume on theme music, and the panels of Denis Villeneuve's films Arrival, BR 2049 & Dune from freeze frame to moving clip was nicely executed visual storytelling. What many people miss in the gom jabbar scene, is that jessica, during in her panic moments, massages her own hand. That's because she has gone through the same test in her youth, and she remembers the horrible pain, and can't stop herself from emphathising with her son. She then starts citing the litany against fear, and so does Paul, because she has "trained him in their ways".

      Another thing most missed: both Paul and Jessica are being tested simultaeniously. Paul's willpower is tested by putting his hand in the box, Jessica's loyalty to the Bene Gesserit (after she chose to have a son against the order's will) is being tested by putting his son in the hands of the Reverend Mother to face a trial whose pain Jessica is very familiar with. The room is her box of pain and Paul is her hand (in the Bene Gesserit's eyes at least who don't count with the fact that unlike a hand Paul has his own mind, and in light of this of course don't even expect him to pass).
      Another thing is I'm sure the Reverend Mother was hoping Paul would fail. They saw him as an abomination after all but Jessica was like a daughter to Mohiam. And would Jessica have passed her "Gom Jabbar" had Paul failed? Would she have rushed into the room forcing Mohiam to also kill her own "daughter" so to speak? Can it be that this scene is also a test for the Reverend Mother? After all a perfectly run organisation is one where everyone is tested by someone... That would be creepy and genious from Herbert's part at the same time.

    It really is incredible how short a 2.5 hour movie felt. I loved the aesthetics and efficiency of the movie and how it didn’t got bogged down in the CHOAM and Landsraad of it all while still keeping the viewer enticed. I have watched it twice. I read the 1. novel in my early teens and later played the first to PC games Dune and Dune II. It was a great read back then and still is, the games only helped to fuel the joy of this book.
      I think Villeneuve managed to create a great movie. I was not entirely sold the first time I saw it, I saw it as having read and loved the book (I have only read the first 3 books, lost interest after the 3rd),. The second time I saw it, I saw it without the book in mind and enjoyed it way more.
      I personally think we need more movies like this, movies that takes it time to tell a story. Villeneuve achived the same thing, in my oppinion, with Blade Runner 2049.
      I'm looking forward to the second movie with Christopher Walken who I really admire, I hope he blows my mind and of course... Feud-Rautha.

      Thank you so much! I thought that despite not making that clear, they do make an effort to show that their relationship is a good one. They didn't have to include the scene of them cuddling on the bed before Leto was captured, but they took the time to do it and I thought it was a good nod to the nature of their relationship. Dennis is a magician and I cant wait to see his work on part 2!

    • @Atrydka
      @Atrydka ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think in the book it's not exactly obvious that her love for the duke was the (only) reason he wanted a son, maybe she even believed it herself, but when Paul directly accused her of not wanting a son but a kwisatz haderach, a male bene gesserit, she didn't actually deny it (it was during the tent scene in the book, but i think they adapted the feeling of Paul's betrayal and Jessica's "confirmation" of it nicely into the movie in that misty scene after the BG departure). But I agree it would be great to see more of Jessica/Leto's relationship on screen.

    • @k9o3w
      @k9o3w ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a combination of both. Yes, Jessica loved Leto but she was also trying to do her own bene gesserit thing as well. Jessica is a severely flawed person and is shown to be conflicted in most things she chooses to do throughout the entire dune saga.

There was a tiny book cart and this was the only title I recognized, from the '84 movie (which I was way too stoned to understand). I was released before I could finish the last 10 pages! I went straight out and bought the book to see how it ended, and have now read the book at least 8 times. I'll read again this fall before part 2 comes out!

    My history with Dune is... brief, for lack of a better word. I was vaguely aware of the '84 film, but never watched more than a clip or two of it. On a whim, I purchased a digital copy of Dune(2021) and watched it, I was enamored by the cinematography and the story. I needed more, I needed to know how it ended. In response to that need, I went to the bookstore and bought a copy. It only took me a week to read the whole thing, from Chapter 1 to the final listing in the Apendix at the back of the book. I proceeded to read the rest of the series by Frank over the course of the next couple months, stopping only to take a break from the heavy philosophy in Dune and read a lighter, more self-contained story. I've never been so emotionally conflicted about finishing a novel as I was when I finished Chapterhouse. I won't go into spoilers, but I'll say that it both was and was not the end for the Dune Saga. Thinking about them now, I'm elated to have read them, but melancholy to have finished them. For anyone even remotely tempted, READ THE BOOKS.

      If you go back and watch the trailer, you will see greater dialogue between Paul and Reverend Mother Mohiam then watch your Blue Ray which is the theatrical release and compare the scenes. I'm 52 and have been obsessed since 84', I love the Lynch version, and that has an extended version as well. I've read the books a couple of times. If you have not watched it I recommend Jodorowsky's Dune. It's a fascinating documentary of a version of Dune that was never made, but what's so interesting is the potential cast of that movie and the book of concept art and storyboards that has influenced many of my favorite movies.

    The Dune novels - which I read in my youth, decades ago - would probably be at the top of my most favorite books list, if I kept such a list.
    I've also seen the Lynch adaptation, the TV series, and read a bit about the failed (but still very influential) attempt of Jodorowsky, and I have to say, the Villeneuve film blows everything else out of the water. It's hands down the best movie I've seen in years.
    That being said, I can't help but wonder, how it might have turned out, had Villeneuve made it into more of a thriller (like Arrival, Sicaro, Blade Runner 2049) - rather than going for a rather straight action movie approach.
    I think the material would have lent itself well for a thriller - especially a psychological thriller. WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD! So many machinations driven by ulterior motives. So many power games and weird feudal scheming. The Bene Gesserit manipulating politics. The Emperor secretly conspiring with the Harkonnens. The Guild exerting untold power through their control over the spice trade. Dr. Yueh's conditioning and betrayal. Hawat's suspicions of Lady Jessica. The hidden secrets of the Arakeen Palace. Liet-Kynes' unknown true loyalty and his/her plans for the planet. Well done.
    Dune has always been able to capture the imagination (especially of young males - who tend to gravitate toward Sci-Fi...)
    The challenge of ANY film based on Dune is to make the story appealing beyond the core demographic of Sci-Fi.
    Where Villeneuve excels is not so much related to his take on the Sci-Fi genre, but comes through in all his films: a high "emotional IQ" that casts an intensely human-relationships focus on the story being told. He tells often morally ambiguous stories that largely avoid stereotypical heroes and villains. (Since you've now read the first three books, you'll know why the story is right up Villeneuve's alley...)
    BTW, the name "Atreides" is a quote from ancient Greek mythology: in the latter, it is a story of a family caught up in a multi-generational curse of the gods. The story is quite different from Dune's, but you get the point and will see its full fruition if you make it through the hard slog - for some - of "God Emperor of Dune", the story that essentially sees an end (of sorts) to the family tragedy in question.

    Great review! A lot of people tend to try to sell the series on its exterior presentation but you nailed it in explaining the real values of this work

    The TH-cam algo is right for once! This was a random recommendation on my feed and I loved your video!
    I’m a long time fan of the book and thought that Villanueve knocked it out of the park. Your insightful analysis reinforces that view. (Which maybe is a knock on the YT algo for reinforcing previously held beliefs but in this case it gets a pass lol!)

    I love the first video! Dune certainly is very philosophically-driven and leads one to therefore appreciate the multiplicity of ways Herbert has intertwined many of the elements of politics, history, socio-economics, human-nature, geography, biology, and anything else. Truly a master-work.

  • @TheBrixHub
    @TheBrixHub ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Same!! I got hooked on Denis' film, especially since Blade Runner 2049 is one of my favourite films, so I was excited for Dune on the principle that it was a new Villeneuve film, but through that, I became fascinated by Frank Herbert's universe, which led me to read the books, I'm currently at Dune Messiah right now, but I'm really excited especially to keep going, even though I'm finding the series a bit of a tough read.
    I also love some of the reinterpretations of characters in the movie too. While I think Baron Harkonnen's portrayal in the books is fantastic, where he's an almost a bloated caricature, completely governed by his greed and gluttony, I also love how the film took a far more terrifying approach to his character, where his consumption and extreme size goes from cartoonish to almost scarily inhuman.

    • @kaytuesso_
      @kaytuesso_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Messiah is a crazy book to read, its a big turn from the first one! I also appreciated the movie portrayals of the characters a lot, seeing a more modern take on them was nice!
