Ah, the tried and true Shadow Hawk. Honestly, it's one of my favorite mechs. Be it in HBS' BTech game, tableteop minis, or even the pencil-and-paper RPG, it's just so flexible and dependable that I end up using it most of the time.
I don't even really like the super-tech versions or even the ones enhanced with Clan tech. The last time I played one with customization options other than just weaponry, I kept it simple. Ferro-Fibrous armor to free up weight, ultra AC10, streak SRM 4 and a pair of ER medium lasers.

If it wasn't for the ammo, this would be one of the best mediums in terms of survivability. It moves fast for its size, hits a bit light, but carries the armor to stay till it pays out most of the time. Good heat curve over all and it's a solid ride. Especially in the RPG it's good as a starting mech, you can do allot with it and survive it without losing your ride and early game it's price makes it viable to ride a medium when other players are strapping into light mechs.
On the table top this is a machine to not take your eyes off of. A good player with one can do about anything that needs doing even thumping much bigger machines for a little while tool his item jugergnaught mechs can get advantage and then withdraw, play with battle armor in cities, spoil a battle plan all in it's own and stomp on vehicles with enough damage potential to seriously threaten the bigger tanks.
Like I said, you have to pay attention to the damage you are taking over your ammo bins, and do what you can to avoid through armor critical hits. You get good at this, you have fire power, speed and armor in all fields to actually take calculated risks and not have a bad dice role or two destroying your machine, it can get in and out. But it's a skirmisher not a brawler by nature so don't dance with the devil when you don't have to, stick and move. I love mine because few guys take it as excelling enough to take notice of the Des since it's so common over much bigger threats just to see 2 or 3 kills under it's belt before it's ove
Great review again GDN getting better all the time! Keep em coming! I have an idea what the next mech will be lol

On Roguetech mod for Battletech, I just started a Primitive Mech start in clan space and got a primitive Shadowhawk on the starting mechbay. I have learned to love slowly upgrading this mech. It won't do everything well, but you can specialize it to fill a specialized roll as an excellent addition to almost any lance.

Only the clans could go let's redesign the shadowhawk from a 55 ton 5/8/3 workhorse into a 45 ton 6/9/6 scout skirmisher mech. At which point some scientist said... err... doesn't the phoenix hawk already fit that description and wouldn't it be easier to alter that mech. The khan then said fuck you, the phoenix hawk will become a 5/8/5 80 ton assault mech. Like the charger? The most reviled mech in our touman? WITH AN XL ENGINE screamed the Khan. Alright... said the scientist... (deciding to pull up the charge specs and make it look phoenix hawky with an XL engine) I don't suppose you'd allow me to make it a 75 ton mech sir, it'd let you have 2.5 more tons of weapons and armor. IT MUST BE AN ASSAULT MECH OR DO YOU WISH TO CHALLENGE ME TO A TRIAL OF REFUSAL SURAT? Alright glorious Khan, I will make this mech a glorious monument to your great wisdom and intelligence.
This has been a mostly accurate retelling of the reign of Khan Jacob Masters of the Steel Vipers.

This mech just shows you how different (totally broken, please ret-con) Clan mechs were. For this tonnage, the Stormcrow is - about as well protected, IIRC faster, large and medium laser in each arm. Add another medium for the total load out. The Shadowhawk can do what 19 dmg max? The Stormcrow can do that just with it's ER large lasers. Throw in the mediums and you have more than double the broadside. And they don't run out of ammo, the mech doesn't really overheat, they don't partly-hit / partly miss (LRM/SRM).
Of course Clan tech is now so far down the Mechwarrior / Battletech history road it seems not to matter anymore.
The impressive IS mechs were the ones that kept pace with their clan counterparts - and there were not many of those. Marauder, Nightstar, Atlas... maybe?

What I have to use is heavy and assault mechs as they have the right amount of tons to work with my game style though I do have a light mech for when I want to go pack hunting. three or four light mechs working together is a great way to take down the larger assault mechs

@@GrimDarkNarrator It could be, actually. But the gun on the head makes me think "Wolverine" as it has an AMS in the head. But I could very well be wrong. There's a BUNCH of 55-ton machines that are only different in nuance from each other. Add in the variations in artistic renditions over the years and visual confirmation becomes problematic. So, call it a Shadow Hawk! Its all good! LOL

    • @thegreatbamboozler4837

The 'mech at 6:11 does bear "some resemblance" to the old school Wolverine but remember that the classic Wolvie has a hand carried AC-5 (left or right dependent on the 'MechWarrior's preference) and the cockpit windscreen is not large at all. The shoulders are similar with the high reaching armor, but the Wolvie has a larger/beefier upper torso which incidentally makes it hard to kill for a 50-55 ton 'mech... so I'd have to agree with GDN that this appears to simply be a different variant/rendition of a Shadowhawk with a short-muzzle shoulder cannon mounted on the right side (not in the head) as opposed to the traditional long-barrel on the left... Remember that only a few old 'school 'mechs had head mounted weapons as they had various difficulties with them. They tended to impede on valuable cockpit space and sometimes caused uncomfortable heat issues for the pilots of medium and light units. But what do I know :)

Not one of my favorite designs because I'm firmly in the all energy weapon Heavy Mechs are the best camp but I'm fond of it. I'm planning to start Mechwarrior 5 soon so I was reading The Mercanry Life short story anthology which focuses on key members of the protagonist's unit from the game and the unit's actions prior to the game. The Mechwarrior 5 protagonist's mother piloted a Shadow Hawk for much of her time as a Mechwarrior though she started piloting a Stinger, and was piloting a Griffin during her last battle due to the Shadow Hawk having technical issues.
SHe was also a high level Tech turned Mechwarrior and commander, and as someone who has a soft spot for Techie type characters like Tech's Engineers, Mechanics, and Hacker and has played various forms of Tech, Mechanic, Hacker, or Engineer and Pilot or Commander hybrids in various Tabletop RPG settings I have a soft spot for her.

BL-6-KNT Black Knight. Bobba Fett with a particle accelerator for an arm. In my campaign, mine carried a sword, C3 computer and Angel ECM. My Lance mates were a Catapult with Artemis 4 FCS, a Panther with Beagle and TAG and a grasshopper. All carried C3, jump = walk speed and swapped ammo-based weapons for energy, except the Catapult, who carried the only missiles in the Company, and a modified atlas that swapped all other weapons for a pair of long toms [for attacking fortifications, warhammer players, imagine an imperial knight with basilisk earth-shakers for arms]

If you're a fan of 'mechs with swords you should have played a No-Daichi back in the tabletop games...or a Hatchetman or Axman! Nothing puts hair on your feet like good old melee fighting when the autocannons and SRMs run dry!

The Hatchetman, in addition to being Steiner, relies on blasphemous munitions, so many of my kills came from popping ammo bins (on pirates, I know clanners all have CASE) with my PPC. Too bad. Shadow Hawk has been my old reliable in the Battletech game for numerous in game hours. If I wanted lrms to fly, I'll let my Vindicator do the talking. My Shadow Hawk is all srms for days, acting like a mini Kintaro with an autocannon. Two 6s and a 4 is more than enough missile punishment, especially against a target that had been softened up by the Vindicator.

Dang it, i was hoping to finally learn what those weird things on their wrists are supposed to be on the newer art. Sometimes it looks like a random bracket for mounting a weapon it doesn't have, in other pics it looks almost like a extra ventral thumb.

Its hands are made out of two thumbs (one of each side of the hand) and three standard fingers located at the center of the hand.
It looks weird i know but it is more common than you think in mech designs, a famous example of a mech with the same hand design in other media is the Orbital Frame Jehuty from the Zone Of The Enders franchise.
