  • In this video I show you how I installed a 1934 Ford steering box in my custom frame. Eventually I will probably replace it with an early F1 pickup steering box since those are supposed to be really nice, but This will wok for now.

    I love how ingenious you are with solving some little problems with everyday items!

    Your "Goal" is for it to last 100+ years ... you have wonderful attention to "detail" except on "corrosion prevention" ... EVERY place you weld or drill needs to have at least 'Zinc Chromate Primer" everywhere you have bare metal Bro (including the inner portion of a Tube Frame) ... I am only trying to tell you what is required for people to marvel at your ingenuity far past when you pass ... free advice. Also welded gussets where you cut out the frame ... "Buttress" all cut outs.
    I can't tell you how wonderful your Brain works ... you do wonderful work and I love watching it !!!

    I've not commented before but felt I should let you know that I'm enjoying your project very much. In a few months, I will be starting a complete ground-up design and build of a 1940s / 50s MGTD/Mercedes stylize road car for my wife. I have acquired the engine/drive train I plan to use and most all the critical bits, the last part is the design of the body. Currently, I'm rehabbing my shop to prepare for the project. Your frequent videos and detail will be very helpful once I start the actual build; As a fellow creator I know you will understand when I say `Thank You for Sharing'

    Wow, nice job. It would be nice to have a CNC plasma cutter or just a plasma cutter. I wish I could tig weld. I bought one but got too discouraged. Keep up the good work. It will be nice to see the project done. I have a CNC plasma cutter and a mig welder. I make metal art. It is good to see a project go through all the steps; programing, cutting, forming, welding and paint.

      MacroMachines
      You’re only one year in but already miles ahead of many of the new engineers I have worked with over the last 6 years. They may have the book smarts but at least one had to be shown how to hold an impact gun to run a bolt in. He was cross threading and kept saying there was a problem with the bolt hole when he was holding the gun on an angle.
      Don’t sell yourself short. In the end a degree is just a piece of paper if they can’t apply what they “know”.

    F-1 Steering Box is a Great Improvement, But in My Experience There Are At Least Two Different Ones . The Later Ones , 53-56 Have A Much Larger Mounting Flange Than Say The 48-52's. You Can Cut The Flange Down On The Later Ones, I've Done it, But That is Up To You, From A Safety Standpoint, I Won't Advise You , Just Sharing My Experiences On The F-1 Boxes.

  • @arianez5380
    @arianez5380 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    As always super impressed with your skills and ingenuity, but that hole in the frame has probably significantly weakened the frame. Do you have plans to strengthen that area?

    • @wimvandesteeg1353
      @wimvandesteeg1353 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its not a "hole" the topendplate just basicly moved inwards, and its welded again, besides that, the material used for the mount, is thicker, so i think its even stronger, its a box in a tube, welded as 1 piece

    Two things- hairpins are not a good idea on a tube axle - the axle doesnt want to twist so it bends the hairpin- and you will have to think hard about bump steer when you set up the drag link- get it right and it will be a beautifull thing, get it wrong and it will be a dog. Good luck!
