Guys i have been playing volleyball for about 5 months (since July) but i haven't joined a team yet because 1: i am a 3rd year in highschool and i a want to go to uni so i have to study for my exams. 2: quarantine. But i am no beginer athletically first off i am 6'2.5(190cm)without shoes around 6'4(193cm) with shoes on the court i weight around 185lbs(85kg) and i have been playing all kinds of sports since i can remember but most importantly i played basketball until my first year in high school as a power forward then i stopped because i wanted to get stronger and more athletic(i was already working out and going to the gym by the time i was a 3rd year in junior high but i took it way more seriously when i stopped playing basketball) and because my exams (most people stop playing sports in their 2nd year for the same reason) anyways since then i have gained a significant amount of muscle and lost quite a bit of fat i was 6'1(185.5cm)barefoot and 175lbs(80kg)and could bench half my bodyweight for 12 reps i could do 5 pull ups, i could run 5km at around 28 minutes and i could touch the rim with ease so that's 308cm reach that high yet now i can bench my full body weight for 12 reps i can do 12 pull ups run a 5km in around 20 minutes i am currently doing a jump training program (started about 2 months ago) so now i can touch 320cm and i aim for 330cm before summer and overall a way better athlete. For volleyball skills : I can jump serve i can spike i can receive pretty well i and i can set the ball albeit i am a beginer in volleyball i have improved exponentially playing 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 games both beach and grass and i have met a really good coach who will train me during summer and i will join his team he has played and coached volleyball at the professional European level and before he retires he wanted to coach a small local Team( the team that I'll join). So here lies my question what position do you guys think i should play given my stats and skills shoud i let that for the coach to decide? I like playing setter and opposite hitter ( i am right handed but my aproach is that of a left-hander) what do you think?
@@A--lex I'm not sure since you're a beginner your interest and your different skills may evolve for some time since I also played as a libero in elementary for 1 year but for the next year for my last year in elementary I played as a setter because my coach thought it would be more beneficial to the team 1 being my height and 2. After all, we didn't have a setter and 3 because of how much ball control I have according to the coach I really didn't like it at first but I grew to love it now. If I were you I would ask my coach instead. I'm already a 2nd year in junior high my 3rd year as a setter but I want to be able to spike as well to help my team. But in the end, it's really up to you which position you enjoy and of course if your willing to improve on that.
For a long time I never thought of myself as a setter, but joining a co-ed league kinda forced my hand to take more of the setter role. I can say I'm confident enough to cover for my women's league when our main setter is out, but always looking for ways to improve. Thanks for the tips, Coach!
omg yeeeeeees, I’ve been wanting something like this for a while. Most volleyball videos on youtube focus on technique (which I’m still working on) but I feel like I’ve been plateau-ing lately had difficulty finding how to break the mental block, I think this will definitely help
That’s the first thing I do lol. I do it not just for a motivation for him to continue TH-cam but to get his videos recommended more to others to enjoy. 😊
As a setter this is that one thing I always struggle with!! AND FINALLY HERE COMES A VIDEO OMGGGGG I mean like coaches always respond that "it depends on the moment" and i'm sure that's true but sometimes beginner setters just need a basic guideline, then from there more experience. Like seriously. But some coaches don't really elaborate or emphasise this =) All the more difficult to play as a setter.
Im 49 yrs old, everytime I play valleyball in my old school interbatch im a setter but im not really good so i decided to watch this video to improve my self, but sometimes i doubt my self because i don't know its right or wrong.,im im willing to practice and practice.thank you coach for this video, God bless you, from Philippines
Watching this as a setter, gotta know where the opposing middle blocker IS. You as a MB, will have your work cut out for you if the setter is basing their decision on where you are because they can see you just as well as they can see the pass coming at them. I.e. if my middle is coming in for a 31, do you stay at home, or do you follow that hitter? If I see you follow that hitter, I'm setting my right side a 93. If I see you stay home, I'm setting that 31.
I’ve never been a setter because I’m more of a utility player so I’ve never been trained but Id love to be a setter because the logic, precision, and strategy behind setting. I was hyping myself up half this video because I did a lot of these already naturally when I do set but I learned so much your videos are gold!
My Friends suggested that i became the setter but i don't have enough experience in volleyball, so i trained since the start of the quarantine, i just can't wait to play with my friends
I appreciate the clarity with which you coach. My daughter is just starting into Vollyball, and your videos have helped! Oh... and I love the Haikyu! reaction videos.
I am a setter, and i think that the choices comes naturally, like you search the best choice( a feint?, Make a 1st tempo with 6, pass it to the oposite, pass for a 2nd line attack?), but this is the joy of being setter. Nice vid🔥🔥🏐🏐
My goal for 2021 its to join a voleyball team, i love the sport but never had the courage to play it. But im feeling more motivated than never before. Thanks for your advices, Coach
I love, love, love your videos! I share your videos with my students and with other coaches. Thank you for everything you do for the game of volleyball. If you are ever in the Chicago area, please stop in and meet my players. The coaches and I will take you to a great dinner in Chicago LOL
Thanks for sharing my videos and watching them! We were just in Chicago for the VLA tournament! Darn. I'll be back there next March, so hopefully we can connect then
Keep in mind these tips are advanced, it obviously helps to keep these in mind but prioritize setting comfortable and consistent balls before trying to apply these tips!
how should I approach volleyball? I want to play on an indoor team but living down south and with covid going on, it seems there aren't many routes to persue volleyball. Thanks in advance, love your videos !
Do all your hitters just have to be paying attention? Or do you call out who’s getting the ball? Anyone who has answers… thanks a lot! I’m just worried about faking out my own team… I play volleyball in a backyard setting and we occasionally do tournaments. I’ve been wanting to learn more about setting strategies thanks for the tips!

Hi coach! Could it be that in the first example of "Setting against the flow, 10:00" the setter actually sets "with" the flow, and in the second one against? Otherwise I'm not sure what exactly you meant by the flow. Still a wonderful set, that first one!
hey coach I have a question, so I have a habit when im serve receiving or digging a hard driven spike and that is that I hop and serve the ball while im in the air and most of the time im able to absorb the ball and send it near my setter. Is this a bad habit? should I change it or should I just keep doing it?
While the level of play keeps improving you'd probably start shanking a lot. Coach donny im having a really hard time to find a molten flistactec volleyball mainly because the stores in the philippines dont sell them and i was hoping you can suggest where to buy an authentic flistatec ball alot of them here i see is fake which will just crumble so easy.
YOu mention setting against the flow and using middles as a decoy, but you didn't mention the advanced tactics that make it 3d chess. -either learn to glance over whilst the pass is in the air, or use your peripheral vision, to establish where their middle is; always know where their middle is when setting. -use gaps and back quicks to make their middle blocker move one way or another before you set. (i.e. I run a play with a 13, gap/31 and a 93). As the pass is coming to me, if I see their middle follow my middle who's hitting the gap, I'll set the 93 (against the flow). If their middle doesn't follow, I'll set the 31. I -if the pass is towards one antenna or another, you can assume that the blockers will cheat that way. (i.e. if I get a pass that's on the right sideline, I can still shoot it out to the 1 zone, especially if I see their middle and left side blocker follow me over). You can also watch out for the outside blockers who (what I call) want to be middle blockers, where all three blockers are standing inexplicably within arms' distance of one another. If you guys want to run that scheme, it can be easily burned by fast outside sets and hitters who know how to bounce line shots. Think of that tactic like an NFL QB watching a safety cheat one way or another to double cover a receiver. You then throw it to the other receiver who has one on one or wide open. Run plays to get that safety to move one way or another, or they will pay dearly if they don't. You start making it a choice for you and your team, and make it a guessing game for the other team. That said, ensure your team can pass/serve receive proficiently, first. LOL
So... the "ace" or "go-to player" is a garbage man? 😂 BTW would you consider making reaction/analysis videos of some epic matches? Not a player at all, but I find game strategies really interesting to learn!
I wanted to see this since in basically a noob at setting I’d say I’m ok but I’m not that good and I just saw what he said about an experienced spiked and inexperienced blocker he’s gonna see that in one of the games of season2 no spoilers tho
@Caiman Araújo Yeah I've seen this many times lol. Regardless they end up setting anyways and then when they get pissed. They start swinging lol. They get points either way lol
Ephesians 2:8-9 (8)For by grace you are saved through faith ,it is a gift of GOD, not by works that no one may boast. Through JESUS CHRIST that we are saved, not by works
Gotta love the garbage men/women out there! You cannot imagine how relieving it is to have a player in the team whom you can always rely on. You take so much weight from our shoulders, thank you all
Hahahha my height is only 5"2 and maybe our tallest blocker is 5"10 and they cant block me maybe its just a matter of thinking well and fast reaction 😅 just my opinion
The fact that I've already set for 2 years and still learned something about this video shows that everyone learns about something
Two years isn't much, especially when talking about setting. I've been setting for close to four years and still have much to learn!
Two years isn’t that long experience wise
I agree to both of you

I'm 14 years old and a setter, i never been trained ever since i started playing. I'm a setter instinctly
amazing video!!!
I wish my coach taught us these things

you can call out their name or position before you set but before that, the hitters should also be calling for the ball
Attackers should always be ready for a set
Not even a setter, but it’s good to know this just in case 🥴🥴
I don't even play volleyball and I'm watching this 😅 I've always wanted to play 😅

-if the pass is towards one antenna or another, you can assume that the blockers will cheat that way. (i.e. if I get a pass that's on the right sideline, I can still shoot it out to the 1 zone, especially if I see their middle and left side blocker follow me over). You can also watch out for the outside blockers who (what I call) want to be middle blockers, where all three blockers are standing inexplicably within arms' distance of one another.
