    Senior citizen , mineral tubs , 1 slip only. The environment is changing. That means it's getting more challenging. Oklahoma is short on rain. The anti perspirate being sprayed above is working. If you've lived the last few years with eyes wide open you know you had better step up your game . Our garden went Ruth Stout last year . Must have soil moisture. Last years potatoes was good, sweet potatoes not so much. Lack of water. 2 slated storm's recently, we got no rain. Glad I'm of mindset that I had the drippage going. Chemicals in foods, herbicides in hay. A gardener who look's to put up their produce needs to evaluate any and all ingredients going into the garden. Did grandma and grandpa buy soil ? No they did not. 😊 food is medicine and ours wants to come from the backyard. Easy and normal are out the window 😊. Nuff said.

      I am from Oklahoma and you said mouthful brother. I watch videos because it has been a while since I gardened. I am trying to take in all I can. Moved back to our farm place and bought bunch of seed vaults to start the growing. We have a lot of people in my family and must feed entire family. Using farm land got some cow calf pairs propane tank full and now working on a little gardening in tubs and grow bags trying to get back in the swing. Was raised on same farm by grandparents who were married during depression. So used to garden can raise livestock chickens and can food but has been a while am only one in family who remembers some so watching videos and trying to do so farm can be self sustainable. Entire family will be there it is our refuge from coming storm that The Lord God has provided. Any help of other channels you may recommend is greatly appreciated.

    That's a thing of beauty. I experimented with growing my own slips late last year. This year I'm ready. Another plus with sweet potato slips is that you can eat the leaves! Nothing goes to waste.

    Those sweet potatoes plants are SO healthy. I grew a beautiful vine a few years ago. But had tiny tiny potatoes. They were big enough to taste . Had good soil that was enriched with compost & was loose & not heavy. Im going to try again this year. I like growing in anything that will hold dirt! Have a good rest of the day.

    Thanks for giving your average of 7 pounds yield per 27 gallon tub. I want to give sweet potatoes a try and that is a nice benchmark to see if the first crop has a decent or a low yield (probably the latter, I manage to hit all the beginners mistakes in gardening).

    Awesome!! I plan on buying some sweet potatoes slips too and putting them in. I tried last year and they all died. It gets so hot here. I think I got them in too late. We've got nearly everything else planted. I want to put Asparagus in too. (If I can find some) Made it thru a hard surgery and still recovering so my husband had to do almost everything this year. But our new greenhouse was a big help in starting everything early. We hit 92 degrees the other day but were cooling off this week. My Rhubarb bolted and my onions already have flowers. (I trimmed the flowers off to yield more) I may need some shade cover this year. Can't wait to see what you do with those oats. I have a lot of acorns I'm thinking of using. That will be all new to me. With food becoming so polluted I'm making some big changes too. More homegrown and more canning is key.

    You have a great channel. Very knowledgeable in teaching people to grow in our area. I’m my sweet potatoes growing in mineral tubs. When I listened to others they said 4 to 5 plants per tub??? That seemed like a lot per tub. I’m with you I’m thinking I’ll go with three. I have 20 tubs. Filling is the most difficult and the most expensive. I know I can re use the soil next year. This heavy soil is hard for root vegetables. I have invested so much in my garden in the last few years. Thanks Jill.

    • @ntxg
      @ntxg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Georgia! I agree with you. The soil is the most expensive part. But you can modify the chair by adding some minerals and compost and trying to circulate it evenly. Yeah, we stuck with 2 to 3 plants and did quite well. I don’t want them to be overcrowded and I want them to prosper. Thank you so much for watching us. I’m in East Texas zone 8b and I’m planting out my sweet potato slips into my field which is extremely sandy but I’m working in some compost and organic fertilizer to help. So far things have been growing quite well and my slips took about 6-8 weeks to grow and take off from my seed potatoes but I’ve got dozens ready to go! I’m very excited as this is my first year growing sweet potatoes in this ground on this property so we will see how it goes! I live in the piney woods so it’s been and adventure and mostly I’ve done my growing here in raised beds and grow bags. I’m very interested in using those 27 gallon totes. What a great idea! I have a few of those but the 17 gallon ones. I wonder if I can make use of those for an experiment. 🤔 Fun stuff!

      If nothing else I should at least get some good seeds out of it, but will definitely grab some peat or mix in mostly leaves and pine needles.

    Nice tip - yes -- gotta watch my soil. Nice Green house !!
    We are actually in Pacific Northwest - Near Portland Oregon. Soo not the best conditions.
    Cold and lots of rain. We have to plant the sweet potatoes under plastic. Makes it more difficult to tell what they need.
    Last year I watered too much - still got a crop, but tubers weren't as big and beautiful as they could have been.
    We plant in a 4' x 22' raised bed are to prevent them from spreading throughout the garden.
    I appreciate with Sweet Potatoes - that they don't have to be rotated every year.
    Curing them though is more of a pain - getting the temp. and humidity right for a week.

    Looks like you are in good shape for a wonderful potato harvest! I am super anxious about my potatoes this year. We added onto the garden and added 4 new potato beds, but it’s in new location that always seems to take forever for the ground to dry out. It’s also new compost, not from where we got it last year, and seems very dense. Fingers crossed it will work out, and we will dry out. I’m sure I will wish for rain later on this summer but right now I am so tired of this cold, wet spring we are having. Kennebec and Red Norland are planted. Sweet potatoes won’t be planted until the end of May or first week of June.

    I got my very forst sweet potato slip from a kitchen scrap that I planted half in a pot and kept it moist. By a miracle I got a leaf from it, once I did, I trimmed it off, placed it in a glass of water to let it root, and once it did it went into a small pot qith the cheapest soil I could get xD. About 7 months later, I have a bunch of vines hanging from that pot, and there are two sweet potatoes buried.
