45° Reverse Bay Parking | 2024 UK Driving Test Manoeuvres

- The UK Driving Test includes the option of the reverse bay parking manoeuvre, but it’s also a really useful skill for use in real life. Most new drivers are taught to do the 90° method for their test, but there is another way - the 45° method. In this video, we’ll show how to do the 45° reverse bay park safely - with an overview of the manoeuvre from outside the car, and then a more detailed view from inside the car. We also have a few tips for when you need to park between two other vehicles, or what to do if it goes wrong. I just learned about the 90 degree method and found it wasn't the easiest to do. Found it easier to go in between 2 cars as I could use them as a reference point and helps guide me in. The 45 degree looks a lot easier and will ask my instructor to teach me this one too! You're videos help me a lot on these Maneuvers.
For the purpose of your test, I also prefer the 45 method but busy car parks with impatient drivers are rife in the UK. Therefore, the 90 degree method can be less intrusive if you’re turning into a bay on your right.
It boils down to personal preference and both methods do work but for right bays I’ve had people tooting their horns at me until they understand why you’ve positioned yourself facing oncoming vehicles on the right hand lane.
I see little point in learning to park in an empty car park when in reality at a supermarket you nearly always have to park between other cars.
@@zenabraithwaite1934a learner that’s never been in a car before will need to understand the bays, reference points, etc before going to a busy car park as to not go into another parked car. best to practise safely alone before causing problems.
My driving instructor only taught me the 90 degree method and I have been really struggling because when going so far away from my target bay, I would lose sight of it and forget which one I chose so would mess up. This way seems so much simplier and with more real world applications because I feel like if you are driving three bays ahead of the bay you intend to park in, it gives another driver chance to drive in and take that spot. At least with this method you are across from the bay you are taking and it never leaves your eyeline for my poor little brain (in my defense, in an empty car park it is easy to forget which bay you have selected since they all look exactly the same!)
Totally agree. I have the same issue. Why not teach this maneuver it is so much easier to master

Reference point not clear. Please show clearly where to stop on the next to the target bay and steer. Frame changes quickly and I cannot get it. Thanks

Dont know if it helps but the bay the car is aiming for is always the bay line that comes levels with the middle pillar. So wherever the car slows to a near holt before steering right...the bay line that is level with he middle of the car belongs to the bay the car will park in

You should give reference points especially when to know our car reach 45 degree angle. It can be helpful guide for learners before they can find their own ways which are more convenient and suitable for their cars. A video by Ashley Neal on the same topic provide very good reference points.
The trouble with precise reference points is that they vary a lot between cars and driving positions. We have shown what we look for on this manoeuvre, but everyone should take the time to find their own to suit their car.

I know that, but I am quite sure learners will struggle in finding their own ref points.
Let alone the 45 degree angle, learners might even not know the right time to begin turning to the right (or to the left) as shown at 1:23. You can tell them that it's when our body is aligned with the middle of our chosen spot, or alternatively, approximately when the last line of the spot is under our mirror.
Otherwise, it could become either too early or too late to turn the steer. The process then will take longer time as it needs correction here and there.

At 2:36-2:40, you have mentioned the ref point for 45 degree. But you should better add your explanation with a picture that describes that moment, i.e : when the rear of our car is pointing at the target bay. The picture should show both lines of the target bay appear in the mirror.
Any reference points that are correct for us in a Kia Rio car may not work for other drivers in different cars - so there is no point giving precise references if they aren't reliable. Our video is only intended to support proper driving lessons with an instructor. If you feel you could make a better video then feel free!
Lex Soft I tried with my Toyota Yaris VVT this by going full lock when my shoulder was in the middle of my target bay and I was way out😄 I found when I lined my shoulder with end bay line for my target bay it was better but I feel the 3 line rule works best for the Yaris.

Thanks for advice. I've passed my test about month ago. I have been driving my own car for like 2 weeks , but I can't park at all.After I passed I felt like suddenly I completely forgot about how to park. I'm not joking.
Since I realized it I'm afraid to go anywhere, my husband needs to sit next to me in that case if I cannot do the parking.Does anybody struggle with the same problem?
I'm exactly the same at the moment! Haven't driven for 6 years and just got a car and feeling like I can't park properly is stopping me from going out and giving me anxiety. I always avoided parallel and reverse parking before and was lucky that neither came up on my test. Am actually having a refresher lesson tomorrow on reverse and parallel parking to hopefully get my confidence back. Plus these videos too of course. Good luck, I'm sure we can both do it!

For the 90° method we stop in the middle, but prefer to position close to our bay for the 45° method. Either way is fine, as long as it is completed safely 👍🏼

I passed my test a year ago but only got a car a few days ago and I'm absoloutly terrified of parking! I can drive fine it's just parking that worries me. Especially bay parking and that's what is located at my house I always need my partner to help me. Hopefully soon enough I have enough confidence to do it on my own :(
We'd suggest practicing when the car park is really quiet - then it doesn't matter if you take a few goes as there isn't anyone watching! Good luck :-)

The Advanced Driving School demos are probably the best and easiest to understand.
Quite confusing cause dont really know the parking he is using. The parking should have highlighted somehow

My 2nd test is in three days and my test centre parking bays are slanted, but I had to do reverse on a 45 degree angle which I haven't been taught before. This video is giving me an insight of how to do it, but for tomorrow's lesson I will point it out and ask my instructor to help me out when I practise my manouevres.

I would much prefer it this method of reverse parking.
Sometimes people are in your tail and it's just impractical to go ahead and then come back for parking.
There might be a queue behind you, making it incredibly difficult to park.
I will learn this method. Just need to nail down the reference points.

So steer left then straighten then steer Left again then straighten ? I’m revising your video on this only just my sister’s boyfriend he’s just passed and used this method . and he’s teaching me this I’ll try it with instructor I’m used to shoulder method but I’ll try it .
This method is much better when parking in busy places, as it takes less time and space - however it needs a little skill to steer correctly! Keep practicing 👌🏼
Do we need to singnal right when we steer right to achieve the 45 degree angle?
Good question. We prefer to indicate left to show where we will be parking, but check all around the car before steering right to angle the car. Once we select Reverse gear our reversing lights come on, so it should be clear where we are going 👍🏼

When you reach the target bay. When do we full lock ? is there a reference point ?
There are no firm reference points for this method - it takes a little judgement from the driver. If you want a simple method to get you through the driving test we would suggest the 90 degree method instead.
Hi! I'm doing my driving practical in a few weeks time and my driving instructor said to not adjust my position half-way through a 90° manoeuvre (just doing one full lock in one direction, then one and a half to the other)-- but can I do small turns with the steering wheel in order to get in the bay? A bit confused, because I can't really do it without adjusting a little bit. Anyway, thx for all the helpful videos!
It is rare for any manoeuvre to finish absolutely perfect, without any steering corrections at all. The reference point you use should put the car in approximately the correct place, but if it needs a gentle correction then we should do it.
Thank you! That certainly clears it up. My dad tried it, who has 30 years experience, and he found it unnecessarily difficult without minor adjustments when parking.
In tight car parks or in general / you have to drive a car you aren't used to , is 90 or 45 degree safer/ easier?

Hello, does anyone know if after going 45 degrees you need to pull your handbrake before putting into reverse? (For driving test purposes) thanks
There is no requirement to use your handbrake - but if you like to, you can. We normally just use the foot brake though 👍🏼

We use our judgement to know when to turn with this parking method, rather than fixed reference points.

There are no reference points for this method of parking. It relies on a little judgement from the driver. For a more ‘foolproof’ method, try using the 90° technique 👍🏼
My dad teaches me to do reverse bay parks this way yet my instructor taught me the 90 degree… I find the 45 degree reverse manoeuvre ALOT easier… can I do the 45 degree on my test if asked to do a reserve bay park ??

I find this helpful. But my "dad" here just wants me to rush it fast even although i still have my learners.
There is no rush - it’s fine to take as long as you like on the test, or when going shopping!

We must look around well enough that we are aware of what is all around our car throughout the manoeuvre - so there is no exact amount of looking, but it should probably be at least twice over each shoulder. We don't feel it really matters whether the handbrake is applied before or after selecting neutral, as long as the foot brake is held on to keep the car stationary. However, teaching methods vary so I am sure your instructor can explain why they like it done in that way.

Everything is good and clear except not clearly indication when to turn 45° and I keep watching the video and couldn't see clearly like when the car reached the parking space middle turn? head turn? it is so frustrating. For me it is so important as a beginner, as I always mistake the turning and end up bumping into other car.

so how do i know when i have the car perfectly angled....what am i supposed to see in my mirrors
There are no reference points for this method - but you will know when you have turned to the correct angle when you can see your parking bay directly behind your car in the side mirrors. 👍🏼

When reversing (during your tast) can you cross any line either the on the front ?
As long as you stay safe, and finish within the bay you are fine. Crossing lines during the manoeuvre (or a tidy-up) is OK 👍🏼

Hello, I have just recently started learning to drive with my grandfather. I am keen to perfect my reversing. What do i need to do with the following;?
- Clutch, gas pedal
- Where and when do i need to use brake and gas pedal?

Those questions would take far too long to answer on here. I would suggest you get proper driving lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) as they will be able to show you everything you will need to do for the latest driving test.

When i used reverse parking to the left for 45 degrees how will i turn the
steering wheel to the bay?
Just before the car’s rear wheel enters the bay, we steer full lock towards the bay (left for a left bay park) and then straighten the steering once the car is straight.
I wish my instructor's car's got a camera at the back like your car.
Reversing cameras are useful, but we must still use the windows to look out for danger all around the car!
I’m so bad with this method, spent 9 hours and even on the test day I was literally in the middle of the line completely 😂

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool I prefer this method to be honest. Sometimes I nail it sometimes I may mess up. I think on the test day it was just nerves. I’ll get better at it.
I passed my driving test with 2 minors- the first thing I was asked was reverse bay parking and I was literally on both bays. I asked the examiner if I can correct it and he said I can so I ended up in the bay and pleased to say I passed after all! Good luck everyone else you’ll do it

Reverse park are easy for me rather than forward park.
For me, both are equally easy
If 45 degree parking is acceptable on a driving test, why have 2 of my pupils been told to use the 90 degree method at Burgess Hill test centre? The second pupil had to argue with the examiner and insist on doing the 45 degree because it was what she had been practising.
Why not ask the local test centre manager. At every centre we use either method can be used 👍🏼

This method of bay parking needs a little more judgement from the driver, rather than relying completely on reference points. We suggest most learners use the 90° method for their test, and then consider this method once they are more experienced.
No cones no exact references we need that on the test day not providing good informations to the learners even if we are doing parking there must be cones or whatever
