Making Latex Rock Molds

  • Here's how I used some liquid latex, gauze, and some rocks from my parent's backyard to make unique rock molds. The actual process of making the molds is relatively easy, but it does take a little time. Nothing against commercially made molds, but there is something satisfying about making your own and you can customize them to fit your needs. My advice is to get the cheapest gauze and brushes you can. I had "okay" results washing the brush out between uses but you never truly get all the latex out! To help reduce the number of brushes used, I did as many molds as I reasonably could at once to reduce the number used.
Also, if you are in any way allergic to latex, you may want to look into a different material! I have seen people making molds with silicone rubber caulking but can't personally comment on this.

Thanks, I could see this process working for things other than rocks. I still want to give RTV a try again in the future...

Could you please make a video of you actually making the big rock?

Hmm, let me see what I can do! Can you give a stamp for the "big rock" in question?
