But what was the need of using empty orbital of second borane?
So that the two electrons can travel to either boron and hydrogen through the three combined orbitals, this ensures that the space around all boron’s are symmetrically filled with electrons and it’s not unbalanced through the presence of empty orbitals on one side alone , unbalanced space around a nucleus is pretty unstable, that’s why we see carbocations, BH3 reacting very quickly.
