YES is a thing. A very different and separate thing. They are their own universe. One of the best bands that’s EVER existed. I’ve seen them live 6 times. With bands like YES and PINK FLOYD, their melodic and sometimes mellow sounding music is not exactly what you get at the live concert. Yes, the songs are what you expect, but the delivery is what catches you off guard. When you hear this music played live by the band at concert level volume with the entire stage show, it a hellava experience! The Both are surprisingly very powerful live. Stuff you would expect from a Harder Rock band. That comes with the territory you know? Like IRON MAIDEN, you know that’s going to be over the top strong. So when a band like YES comes across live with a shitload of power, it kind of takes you aback. Even if you’ve listened to them for years before you saw them live like me. It’s hard to describe, the sheer force of the live show. To say it was impressive is an understatement. Both of those bands I mentioned are excellent live. Some of the best concerts you will ever see. If you’re lucky.

Now that you've had a first hit of Yes, no doubt you'll be curious for more. :) To reiterate what others have said/will say, much of Yes's work, especially in the 1971-1975 period, is not just spectacular fun (and they were quite popular at their peak), but also, well...great. Somewhere in their Simon and Garfunkel-meets-Mahavishnu Orchestra-in-London masala they created something absolutely unique and exciting, and some of it is deservedly classed among the great songs in rock history. There are some things before that '71-'75 time and quite a few things after that period that are very good indeed, but their core...the heart of the matter...is found in that era, and perhaps best approached there first. Much cheers!

Glad you dug it. They are the best musicians, as good as it gets. You are right, you probably should enjoy a J before listening to them. That whole tour was with an orchestra, but they weren't featured much on that song. Try Roundabout next, and then if you are ready, some out of this world music on the song Close To the Edge (you will dig it, it has a river theme, etc). Then Awaken and Wonderous Stories, I've Seen All Good People. Much of the lryrics have songs talking about rivers, both as symbolism and literal.

Jon Anderson was a real life Hobbit, and one of the finest vocalists ever. Female vocalists today wish they possessed his talent. Steve Howe has several chapters dedicated to his craft in the Big Book of Howe to Play Guitar. And Chris Squire on bass. He, and John Entwistle of The Who, have schooled everyone who has picked up a bass guitar since 1969 on how it's done. Anything less is just picking your nose.

if you ever decide to do a reaction video to Yes's song, Turn of the Century, it will help if you look up the lyrics first, and take some time to read them, and think about them.. it's an amazing "song," because there is NO rhyme to it... it's an amazingly elegant story of a sculptor, who is sculpting a piece of art, based on his wife.. she gets ill, and dies before he can finish the piece.. he becomes depressed, but, over time, decides to complete the piece, based on his memory of his wife.. and, the piece fills him with joy.. imagine that as the basis for a song !!!!!!!!

Their first 2 albums are really nice, but their next 6 albums are the stuff of legend. Prog Rock at its finest.
'Close to the Edge' is their 18 minute masterpiece, that begins with you "down by a river" enjoying the sounds of nature.
YES would go on to compose 10 more epics (music that's 15+ minutes in length) and many pieces of music in the 8-12 minute range, like this one you just listened to, along with many shorter pieces too that are amazing.
I hope you continue down this journey of YES music. It's an adventure that you'll greatly enjoy.

This is from their 1970 recording "The Yes Album". Back in the day albums really made an impact - not least because bands were being so experimental and had a huge focus on musicality and ability. That's what's so wonderful about so much of prog rock. They weren't afraid to branch out and to create a musical form unlike any we had ever heard. And so many albums truly made an impact on their release because of it. From the delicate, acoustic whimsy of Genesis and "Cinema Show" to the power of ELP's "Fanfare for the Common Man" to the haunting "Starless" by King Crimson. What a time to have lived through. And these albums will still be played in another 50 years time whilst those considered more mainstream and popular will have fallen by the wayside. Punk created a counter movement for disaffected youth, but in rejecting musical complexity and virtuosity it did us no long term favours.

@RogueRxyce YES, several commenters have given good recommendations to challenge your musical repertoire. Please review them. I suggest you pick at least one song from all their albums created during the 1970's (but also don't stop with just one). Roundabout on the Fragile Album got onto the pop charts and had radio play for a while, but there are SO MANY other great songs.

If you haven't already, listen to the studio version of Starship Trooper. It will take you to a deeper level.

You should go back to the original version in '71 to get a flavor of how it all started. That song and also "Yours Is No Disgrace" from the same album.

Yes was such a creative band ... as are all the prog rock bands.
You could do a whole reaction channel just listening to prog rock bands.

Thinking of something nice to say as Independence Day fades into memory .....the New York City Macy's fireworks were INCREDIBLE! I've been around a very long time, but this was next level celebration. However.......I would have hired RogueRoyce as MUSICAL DIRECTOR! After a year and a half of suffering, that display was amazing! But.....the music, as usual, sucked butt, lolllll. Next year Rogue, you need to step up ☮️🎇🌹I kind of cheated, I watched a bunch of your reactions while watching the fireworks 😁😃 Thank you Rogue, 🌹

You should listen to so many old classics from YES. And you and I, Close to the edge, Wonderous Stories, Turn of the Century, Awaken, The Revealing Science Of God....too many to mention here.

I'd recommend the song " Turn of the Century " from the album " Going for the One".very emotional time with a more grounded set of lyrics compared to other Yes tunes.🗿🌴

There is even older great music. The Rite of Spring, Janecek Sinfonietta, Tchaikovsky 4th, Holst The Planets, Ravel Daphnis and Chloe....on and on.

With Yes and Pink Floyd tossed your way, Rush requests should be incoming soon too. As well as requests for quite a few other progressive rock bands I imagine.
