"This is music that I desperately needed to hear today" is a thought many of us have had when we've been listening to YES. Thanks for your reaction and thanks for letting the music speak to your heart. BTW your CTTE reaction is my favorite also. I keep replaying it, just to see your enthusiasm.

Listening to Close to the Edge and other Yesmusic yesterday afternoon, out for a walk in the spring sunshine. I was in the middle of a field, totally alone, surrounded by trees under a flawless azure sky as the church organ hit. Even after almost 50 years of listening to it it still has that emotional power. I spun and jigged, there was a year or two, and yelled for the joy it brought.

I think Jon Anderson is the soul of Yes. He's a bit of a space cadet, but he's consistently tries to write songs and do other things which are uplifting and hopeful... As Rick Wakeman summed him up - "He is the only person I know trying to save this planet whilst existing on another one."

For me, I 've come to consider Chris Squire as the soul of Yes, even as great as Jon is. I've been to Yes concerts with another singer besides Jon, and it was still awesome, but I couldn't bring myself see them without Chris. He was the best bass player in rock. he was so unique, inventive, and had great technical prowess

I have most of the Yes catalog of albums, although not all of the live albums and compilations. There is much to like about The Ladder, has a particular consistent thematic sound running through, lots of rich positivity, and some fun songs too. On a playlist I pair up Lightening Strikes with Finally (like two bookends), finishing with the beautiful "Jon song" Nine Voices. A very good Yes album all the way through, just played it again today after seeing your post.

I remember buying The Ladder when it came out... I had only recently discovered Yes via the early 70s albums Close To The Edge and The Yes Album.... I was playing the game Homeworld, and recognised the vocals from the end-credit song, went looking for the album! The Ladder felt like a return to those earlier compositions; longer form, multi-part songs, but with more modern production values. It was their Fragile for the 90s... awesome album! :-)

    • @LockeTheCole
      @LockeTheCole 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

To be fair, they had gone back to that style before The Ladder, it's just the one that managed to get radio airplay and attention. Talk was an EXCELLENT return to form and it's a damn shame that their record company went under around the time of it's launch. It's a sorely underappreciated gem that I never hear anyone talk (LOL) about even when the topic of underrated Yes albums comes up. Endless Dream especially is a brilliant Yes song that needs more love.

Doug as a composer.... you need to and I mean REALLY need to check out their live concert DVD/Blu-Ray Symphonic Live where they perform with an orchestra. It is hands down one of my all time favorite concerts. You will enjoy it tremendously.

    • @theAsterisk
      @theAsterisk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Seconded. Symphonic Live is the single best live vocal performance the band has recorded of those I have heard, especially if you're interested in hearing Chris Squire's backing vocals in their interplay with the lead, including some truly impressive falsetto on the opening track. It's also just an excellent setlist- Close to the Edge, In the Presence Of, The Gates of Delirium, Ritual . . .
The bass on Long Distance Runaround gets all the low strings going at it with gusto. German bow more or less required. (Most of the orchestra looks like they're having a blast the whole time.)
FWIW, the DVD seems to have a more pleasant sound mix than the CD album, too. Not sure if they were both made from the same night's performance or not.

Doug, there are many classic YES songs on The YES Album when guitarist Steve Howe joined YES. But it’s important to realize that Tony Kaye was still on keyboards back then in 1971 on this studio album. Rick Wakeman replaced Kaye on keyboards with their next album Fragile, followed by Close To The Edge.
So it is very important to also listen to the tracks from The YES Album on subsequent live albums when Wakeman was touring with YES. Wakeman takes the early songs to an entirely different level. You can imagine what the studio The YES Album might have been if Wakeman had joined YES a year earlier.
Although I’m no musician, YES music has been part of my life since I was 11 years old. Thanks for doing your channel. It’s so cool to witness you experiencing YES for the first time. I always learn something new and gain a greater appreciation, even 50 years later. Take care!

I live in San Luis Obispo. The Fremont, where these performances were recorded in ‘96 fits about 600-700 adoring fans! The previous, and only time I’d seen them was in ‘74 in Long Beach on the Tales tour!!!!

YES is the most affirmative and uplifting band ever. That's the trick to their name. Ever positive.
Of later YES two albums stand out to me. The Ladder is one. Two years later than this they released "Magnification", which is an album that both grounds a person and carries them into the aether. Like YES always does.
But there is no keyboardist for this YES album. It is the only time they only had 4 band members.
Instead of keyboards they have the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.
Not since "Time And A Word" have they used an orchestra.
Just look at the song titles and then tell me you don't want to hear them. I suggest the title track, "Magnification". Or "Dreamtime". Or, "In The Presence Of", to get that true feeling of being in the presence of YES.
If you want live orchestra with YES then check out "Symphonic Live" and watch them live with the European Festival Orchestra.
"If we were flowers we would worship the sun. So why not now? Why not now"?
"In The Presence Of" is their "Awaken" of the 2000's. Treat yourself and your viewers.
    Blessings.

@9:54: "Something's coming..." Ya know, Yes actually did a cover of "Something's Coming" from WEST SIDE STORY, as a b-side (and speaking of TIME AND A WORD, the cover was also from that era, I believe?); I'd love to hear Doug's reaction to that...

I saw them at the Cow Palace in San Francisco 1976. It was life changing. You should review any part of Rick Wakeman's "Journey to the Center of the Earth." It's a theme based album, orchestrated and all very good..

Rick is a God of a keyboardist. This solo is amazing. The problem I have w this is that the last part isn’t as throaty & deep as the original on Starship Trooper. Saw Yes recently on the Grand A Fair Tour. i.e. The Keith Emerson Experience aka ELP, John Lodge’s band, Toto & then Yes. I was too tired to appreciate Yes but the show was amazing especially the ELP & John Lodge parts. BTW I have an Oroborus tat around my wrist.

Some of the best Prog are under-represented so you won't get mass request because most only know what is promoted but CURVED AIR is one the best. Classically & Folk influenced British early progressive Rock. Unique because of FEMALE Vocalist (from HAIR) & (Royal Academy) violinist Darryl Way. Their early 70s LPs are all great but "SECOND ALBUM" with epic many songs is highly recommended. Just trying to think out of Prog box and help share more than the usual suspects.

Great suggestion. Argent has 2 popular hits but have many progressive songs. Music of the Spheres written by Jim Rodford their bassist and cofounder, Rod Argents older Cousin, bassist for The Kinks for 19 years, The Mike Cotton Sound, The Zombies for 19 years, bassist for Colin Bluestone's Touring Band.
It's about the inspiration to be a musician, to write, create, and perform music. The muse musicians search for is in the Cosmos.
This inspiration is demonized by society. It's super proggy and profound. It inspired me as a teenager, the same year I heard Yes Close to the Edge.
There's Hawkwind, Gentle Giant, The Strawbs, The Alan Parsons Project, Uriah Heep, Pretty Things, John Miles.
Doug would enjoy these bands. They're all British Proggers that don't get suggested very often.

Don't neglect to hear the inventiveness of Chris Squire's bass in both these songs. There's a spot in the middle of "Homeworld" (26:57) where he plays the highest and lowest notes on his bass with only one note between (exactly half way, of course).

Fantastic stuff. Thank you so much. In 1976 I saw Rick Wakeman on BBC 2's Sight and Sound In Concert. The next day, they didn't have any Rick Wakeman albums at Rainbow Records, so I bought the first Yes album I saw with him playing on it. _Close to the Edge,_ and then _Fragile._ I was not sure what to get next, _Tales from Topographic Oceans_ or _Yessongs._ Someone suggested _Yessongs,_ But I bought them both! The live versions of _Yours Is No Disgrace, Your Move_ and _Starship Trooper_ are absolutely fantastic. This one's not bad, either!

I got 'The Yes Album' when it came out in '71. That was 'it' for me with Yes, as their later releases have much less appeal. The period around 1967 to 1974 was brim full of amazing music. I just didn't realize it at the time. My excuse is that I was still a stupid teenager. Now I'm in my 'anecdotage'.

I'm pretty sure someone on all your Yes reactions must have commented that very early on Jon Anderson said in an interview that much of the time he chose words he felt phonetically suited the melodic line over any specific meaning. Basically he said to not take too much time trying to make sense of his lyrics.

You actually reacted to a live "Machine Messiah" video over a year ago (probably one of your first Yes reactions). I'm not too big on the vocal production on the Keys to Ascension "live" mix. Sounds like Jon Anderson sang another vocal track in post production to go along with the live vocal to double it. Not a fan of bands tinkering with the original live recording too much in post.
