This is why groups like Heilung who reconstruct history are so important. You and I are likely from very different cultural ancestries yet here we are heavily bobbing our heads in unison. No matter the slight differences, we all came from tribal origins that share more similarities than some people who wish to divide mankind seem to think. At one time, we were all dancing around fires calling upon spirits, and that should unite us all.
@@Sylar0n They actually put in a lot of time and effort cross-referencing with academics on their costumes and some of their instruments before they did their first show, and they worked with linguists who specialize in Germanic and proto-Germanic languages on their last two albums. The issue is most of what we have to go on for the early Germanic people and proto-Norse people is very limited archeology. If the Romans hadn't documented so much in that period, it would almost be a black hole in history until the Angles and Saxxons came to England.
Heilung's performances are rituals. The entire uncut Lifa performance is available on their channel, and it is designed to evoke certain emotions and send the listener into a trance.
The type of singing at the end is called kulning. Germanic and viking Tribal beats songs in Germanic and old Norse tongues. Beautiful tribal music. A huge part of my ancestry thank you my beautiful African sister for reacting
@@Kelly_Cook thank you fellow vocal nerd, I was being generalized because I'm pretty sure this woman doesnt have that singing style as part of her every day life lol.
There is a point in this song that goes from a catchy drum beat to the realization that there is something a lot more deep and powerful going on and you get caught up in it, over come by a wave of something deeply human and familiar, ancestral.
I love Heilung. Whenever I hear them I feel like I’m being connected to something deep on a personal level, even though I don’t speak the language. But then earlier this month I made a crazy discovery. I’ve been researching my family tree for years and recently hooked up with someone who has a link to a shared ancestor who has done a lot more research than me. As well as being related to the kings and queens of medieval England (albeit distantly) I’m also related to early kings of Northumbria and the kings of Leinster in Ireland. Then I find out that I’m related to the ap Gryfydds of Wales and the kings of Dublin in Ireland at a time when the kings of Dublin were Norse settlers. Through them, and through my Saxon ancestors, I go back to pre-Viking age Scandinavians and Germans. Through Ivar The Boneless I’m even connected to Ragnar Lothbrok. Names I’m familiar with when I studied history at university 20-odd years ago. Heilung mainly perform music inspired by Bronze Age and early medieval Scandinavian and Germanic culture. Whenever I hear music like this I’ve always something electric run through me. Maybe I’m being overly romantic, but I perhaps I’ve been spiritually connecting with my ancestors on some sort of level. Some sort of race memory. Or maybe I’m just spouting nonsense. Thank you for reacting to this.
They doh't sing German, but they sing snippets of old germanic language(s) from rune findings etc. found on antler bone, wooden sticks, rune-stones etc. If I remember correctly, the snippets used here are from iron age (pre-viking) + they recite the rune alphabet
Great review! Maria's voice is among the most beautiful on the planet. If you liked this, might I suggest another ritual from Heilung called "Anoana" and "Othan" Please let us know what You think. Thank You for reading this....... Frostproof,FL. U.S.
Heh... after hearing that intro for almost 50 times now, I finally understood why the intro felt familliar... rikkasti taiva is finnish for richest sky/wealthiest heaven ( rikkaati= richest, weqlthiest, most affluent, most fortunate etc. Taiva=sky, heaven, up above)
The song's title can be found in the Mesogothic Anglo-Saxon glossary as "In-Maidjan", which means "deceptively change" or "corrupt". This makes sense since the entire story within the album consists of a peaceful village that is corrupted by having to go to war. Therefore, Proto-Germanic seems to be the language. Harigasti Teiwa Harigasti Teiwa "is a clear Germanic reference to the Negau helmet. This helmet contains several Etruscan alphabet inscriptions that include the words" Harigasti teiwa which are the first words of the song. This could be translated as Harigast (the priest) although it could also mean, the priest of Teiwaz (Tyr). "Harigast" is often (not always) seen as a personal name and that it could be made up of the words "harjaz" (army, troop, warband, war) and gastiz (stranger, guest). The forms "Hari" and "gast" is particularly found in west-germanic. As such the name could mean "war guest" or "foreign army". Tawol Athodu - I accept the invitation. Ek Erilaz - I am a runemaster. The word has been interpreted to mean magician or runemaster. The word is an ablaut variant of count and it is believed that it could be linguistically related to the name of the tribe of the Heruli or Herulos. The Heruli were a Germanic tribe from Scandinavia that was invaded by the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. So it is probably simply an old military title of Germanic provenance. Owlthuthewaz - owlthu (glorious) thewaz (servant). Means servant of the glorious Niwaremariz - Priest of the god "Ullr" / famous, renowned. From the proto-Germanic term Wulþuz (glory) wolþu- is possibly a reference to a God, surely the God Ullr. Saawilagar Hateka - My name is Sawilagaz. Harja - Army - leader of the army; commander; Warrior Wuotani Ruoperath Wuotani - Oh, Wodan! Ruoperath - famous and brilliant. This could be interpreted as the following: I, Priest Harigast. Aaccept the invitation (to battle) I am the Heruli. I am a renowned priest of Ullr. They call me Warrior. Oh, Wodan the famous and brilliant! The next chant are the names of the 24 Norse runes of the Elder Futhark. This is also known as runic song. Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo, Hagal, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowelu, Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Othala. In English: Wealth, Aurochs, Thorn, Divine Breath, Travel, Torch, Gift, Joy, Hail, Need, Ice, Harvest, Tree, Luck, Elk, Sun, Creator, Birch tree, Horse, Man, Water, Fertility, Day, Home. Odin, prepare for battle! A hug.
Thank you for this… love learning anything I can about Heilung, their music has been life changing & so healing for me. Went to see them in San Francisco, can not put into words how I felt after… Amazing Experience!!! ♥️

Very well said.
I dont think they reconstruct anything. But the primal feeling is just right there punching into your face and you are left speechless.

Watching your reactions brought a smile to my face. I recently attended a ritual and yes, it was a transcendent experience!
I like your openness towards different music and cultures. That's how it should be.
Maria Franz has been around for more than ten years. She only had to put on antlers for people to notice her talent.

It has essences of kulning but that isn't kulning.
