Free was one of those one off times when a group of supremely talented musicians found themselves together in the same band. Rodgers the best rock/blues voice you will ever hear. Kossoff best vibrato and so much feeling in every note. Fraser a virtuoso bass player. Kirke holding it all together very underrated drums. Hard to comprehend a band being so good so young.

      @Bubdiddly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Kirke plays pure music on the drums - beyond rhythm - he tailors it so well to each moment of the song

I met Andy Fraser and Paul Kossoff at their respective gigs in Sunderland after Free had split. Andy had a maxi length tiger skin coat on! I shook hands with Paul, he had hands like a bricky, I couldn't believe how rough they were. Needless to say I got their autographs. I could have done with a camera, but no mobile phones in those days!

    Lyrics
    Child you're talking of freedom
    Painted on your garden wall
    It's not there at all
    Child you're talking of wisdom
You say wisdom is a golden rule
    You ain't no fool
But you don't know who it is
    Who calls you name
In the light of the golden moon
You don't know who it is who brought you here
    And chained up your heart
    So soon
Child you're life is a fairytale
    And it's not the same
    And the clouds
    You're hiding behind
In your misty mind have disappeared
Like a sailor far from the shores of your dreams
And far from the love of your home
Sailor lost on your own misty seas
And the chains on your heart, baby
    Might be my love
    Might be my love
    It's so confusing
And you feel that you're loosing yourself
    But, there over the mountain
You thought you'd never have to climb
    There's a road
    Reaching and stretching
To the corner of your mind
Like a river casts aside the dust
And grows and grows as it flows
The feeling deep inside of you
    Must break like a dam
    So set you free
    So set you free
    So set you free.

This was always my favourite song on the album. It shows off the amazing voice of Paul Rodgers (who was born about 35 miles from where I live) wonderfully. Best ever voice in Rock.!!!
All the Free band members have been heroes to me for 50 years - but this song is all about Paul Rodgers.
Sure - Plant, Gillan & Mercury were pretty damn good - but the No1 spot is not even close!
Just for the hell of it, here is the list of MY Top 12 Rock vocalists ever in reverse order - let me know if you disagree!
    12 Roger Daltrey
    11 Stevie Marriott
    10 David Bowie
    9 Freddie Mercury
    8 Kelly Jones
    7 Ian Anderson
    6 Jack Bruce
    5 Ian Gillan
    4 Robert Plant
    3 Chris Cornell
    2 John Lennon
    1 PAUL RODGERS
This is ranked purely in order of their ability to MOVE you - not in terms of power or range or attack - but just in terms of the amount of shivers down the spine.
I am sure no-one else would choose the exact same dozen - and definitely not in the same order - but for me these gents are the cream of the crop.
Six sadly no longer with us, Paul and 5 others still going strong.

Bandit, it's good to look back at what we came from, but don't forget the bad. 60's had several of our leaders killed. The nat'l guard was killing students......domestic violence was something women had to put up with.....racism was openly accepted. No doubt some things were better, but some things were worse as well.

somewhat simpler times back then, similar problems as today, but less distractions so emotions and thoughts were more focused. Today's kids minds are distracted by tweets and face book nonsense. Shallow conversations. Those of age (I am 63) born in 57 remember how we looked forward to meeting up with our friends. Did not idle chat every day. When we got together we did more, felt more. I know right? I'm still playing this and all their stuff on my old guitars, through old amps, and STILL am amazed by Rogers, Kossoff, Kirke, and of course, the fantastic Fraser. Kossoffs tone on this and playing is by far some of his best stuff.... God I feel frickin' old....

They were slightly before my time, but I discovered them properly in 1980 when I bought a copy of 'The Free Story' at the age of 14. For me no other band has measured up to them since that day, nearly thirty eight years ago. I feel old as well sometimes; though not quite old enough to have been able to see them play live, but at least we are still able to enjoy the recordings!

Louis. Their a blues band. Check out. Don’t say that you love me. Those of us who have followed them from. Free, to Bad Co. The Firm and beyond, realise how special this band really was. It was a coming together of 4 talented, individuals, that together took them to the pinnacle of blues music in the 70s.
In my opinion. Paul Rodgers, was, is and always will be, the best blues rock singer of all time. Kossoff the best blues, vibrato guitarist. Fraser the best bassist and Ralph’s just held them all together with the timing and tempo. He did the same for Bad Company. Such a shame we all got old. However their music lives on

Now you need to look into all the great players that played the Early Gibson Les Paul's, especially the 1958/1959/1960 Les Paul burst's, and the history behind those guitars being traded and bought and sold between the greatest rock musicians of the era. Peter Green gave his Les Paul 1959 to Gary Moore who sold it when he was taken to court for the rights to one of his most beloved songs called Still Got The Blues, the guitar is now owned by Kirk Hammett of Metallica who bought it for over $500,000.00. One of Eric Claptons famous Les Paul's was sold to Bernie Marsden of the Original Whitesnake, now Gibson makes a $10,000.00 copy of that 1959 Les Paul, as well as many others owned and traded through the years. The history of thos guitars and Paul Kossoff's Les Paul guitars are part of music legend. Roger's farewell to Koss? Several songs have been said to be to Roger's sending a message to the errant guitarist but there is always a bit o doubt about this. Whatever, hell of a song from a brilliant album that I have recently rediscovered. Musically, how the hell did we get from here to the nadir we have reached now?

Not sure about Rodgers penning other songs as a message to Kossoff, but I believe "Child" was definitely one that Rodgers claimed to have especially written for Koss when he was failing in a bad way. It's in the Free biography, "Heavy Load." www.amazon.com/Free-Heavy-Second-David-Clayton/dp/0954216903

So much still to know and we know almost nothing. Beautiful song, those first two notes are just so full of tension and melancholy, Koss was right on the edge and liable to let go, and of course he eventually did, not waking up on a flight in USA.
Friends of mine have done that, I have seen death engulf me but I pulled back, three times and somehow I am still here. Out there in the future you are trying to imagine who is writing this, but I am perhaps long gone. Does it matter at all?

Where do you start with this group of young men...... An underrated band with a wealth of musical talent coalesced into a great four piece.
Paul R is the very best rock and blues singer. Paul K a great guitarist with a distinct and beautiful sound.
Andy a top bassist and Simon an uncomplicated drummer.
I love this song since the very first listening and am now long term Free and Bad Company and Paul Rogers fan.
If I could time travel I would go back to the early 70s at the age of 21 to appreciate them live.
