Save Russian for last and definitely learn it after German there are a few cognates to Russian from German and there are also some loan words from German to Russian.

Thanks for your video. I literally just found your channel. I already speak two languages natively and am learning Spanish now. I plan to use laddering sometime next year to learn Arabic from Spanish. I took Portuguese over 12 years ago, so I hope to learn it again one day. Along with French. After that, I dont know where life will lead me, but your videos are very inspiring. Keep it up!

Wish I found this 2 years ago when I started learning Portuguese as my 1st foreign language. Having to figure EVERYTHING out without a teacher was a task, but I think so far it's helped me and will continue to help me. When I decide to learn Italian I'll use this video (if I remember) to learn these endings

My problem with multiple languages is always how to maintain them alive when they are rarely or never used in active speaking, since after they always tend to fade and fluency is very thin matter 😊

    • @polyglotdreams

My approach is to concentrate on reviving and improving the languages that I plan to use in the near future. For example, I will be going to Hungary for the Polyglot Conference and then to Romania at the end of October. So now I am brushing up on both.

one should be aware of pronunciation variations, though: for example in Italian it is pronounced "addatàbile" not "addatabìle" (stress on the last A not on the I) - and many of the others which were pronounced incorrectly, unfortunately.

I just found out your channel and I became your fan. When I was younger I just studied English (in a traditional English school in my country). For the last two years I began to study mandarin by myself (at the beginning) and two months ago, I just started Cantonese. In fact, similarities in the languages really help a lot (most in writing, in my case, because the pronunciation is quite different). And as you said, when you learn a language, the next one becomes easier to learn. In just a few months, I can understand Cantonese almost in the same level as I understand and speak mandarin nowadays (I am HSK2 student, struggling to achieve HSK3 哈哈). And I discovered I did the same as you... when I study one of the languages, I get the oppotunity to learn how to say a new word on the other language. Thanks for sharing your tips to us!

In fact the vowels sounds as spanish, but sometimes the "e" sounds like the american "a" (the infamous schwa), and the "o" sounds like the "u" sometimes as well

This is not only the case in romance languages, very similar patterns can be noticed in other language families especially the ones in europe such as slavic, ugro-finnic and turkic families due to their close historical proximity however indo european languages seem to have this rule most prevelant due to the spread and influence of greek and latin.

Love these hacks. As a one month old Spanish learner, I feel motivated. Thank you. Can you please make a video on the word roots.
I have read Norman Lewis - Word Power Made Easy and it completely changed my vocabulary and approach as I understand the word roots.
For example last week I saw the word "obscura" in spanish and immediately knew "obstruction" and from the context I knew it was talking about the day being dark/short in winter. Also, the word for late "tarde" is immediately understoon from the english word "tardiness".
I would love to see your take on the word "roots" connecting different words in different languages. :)

It is too bad, there aren't too many works that show these patterns. The top languages shown to have them with commercial products have been with French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
The Catalan, Galician and Romanian are just not seen as viable to be sellers. It is unfortunate, as it would fill a void for a particular niche.
Do you intend to cover some with Germanic languages?
I already know some Linguistic patterns have been covered with the Michel Thomas and Margarita Madrigal courses between English and German.
Edit: I have looked over loanwords for passive learning as well. Examples: English and Spanish loanwords in the Austronesian language of Tagalog and Bisaya.
Unfortunately, they are not as common as body of works either, as they would not be seen as big sellers.
