Whisky.com reviews the Lagavulin 10 years. We taste the Lagavulin 10 years. This Lagavulin matured for 10 years in remanufactured American white oak barrels and first-filled bourbon barrels. The maturation intensified the typical Islay maritime and smoky character of the single malt.

Horst, I notice a noble, pleasant "maturation" on your face. Time passes, but over good people, it passes beautifully. I wish you both health and success. Thanks for the many whiskey reviews. 🥃

@@elieaoun6 if it has to be just between the 2, then the 8YO. But there are many good whiskies from other distilleries on Islay, that aren't owned and governed by a huge conservative corporation actively working against introducing progress in the industry :)

      @@KNURKonesur thanks for the reply!
I see! Besides the 2 lagavulins, I have got ardbeg 10, ardbeg Uigeadail, laphroaig 10, laphroaig lore, bunnahabhain 12, bowmore 12 and caol ila 12. Any other recommendation :)?

    • @KNURKonesur
      @KNURKonesur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@elieaoun6 a lot to unpack here.
First let's go through the stuff you mentioned:
      - Ardbeg 10 and Uigeadail are both very decent releases from LVMH, I'd look for Corryvrackan as well (don't force compare it to Uigeadail like most people do, it's dumb, they serve very different purposes as they have very different profiles), skip An Oa and Wee Beastie which are just bad.
      - Laphroaig 10 suffers from being 40%, it's too watery to be really good, it's nice as a start, but I'd recommend Quarter Cask and Brodir as more interesting and full bodied options, Lore is a good shout as well, and absolutely look for a 10YO Cask Strength which is one of the best whiskies from Islay on the market
      - Bunnahabhain 12 doesn't count as it's not even smoky :) look for Toiteach A Dha (which is a similar profile to Ardbeg An Oa but actually tasty) or one of the limited Moine releases. For non-smoky Islay whiskies Bunnahabhain is one of the best choices, the 18 and 25 are beautiful
      - Bowmore 12 is a joke, and most of their releases have been a joke for over a decade now, skip 15 and 18, all of them suffer from 43% being too watery and flat, look for the more limited "Atlantic Sea Salt" release which is actually rich and full bodied and really tasty
      - Caol Ila 12 and most of their official bottlings are praised by many but to me not worth any attention for the same reason, all of them are 43% and watery and flat and boring. The upside is there is a SHIT TON of independent bottlers who sell Caol Ila at higher strengths from single casks and a lot of that is just good reliable whisky
Now for the stuff that you should look into:
      - any release by Kilchoman, literally any, you can start from Machir Bay which is the more standard mostly bourbon matured version, or Sanaig which is mostly ex-sherry matured (kinda like Uigeadail and Lagavulin 16), or their more limited Loch Gorm, PX, STR, 100% Islay etc. releases
      - any release by Port Charlotte, especially their cask exploration series, MRC:01 is probably still my absolutely fav whisky from Islay, the PAC:01 is amazing after it opens a bit, the standard 10 is great, the Islay Barley versions are really interesting exploration of local ingredients. There's also a bunch of independent bottlers who sell great Port Charlotte single casks
Now the big question is what do you want to do with your money. For the last couple of years I've focused more and more on a "vote with your wallet" approach where I find out which brands are independently owned and pushing more modern solutions, zero waste, more recycling, less carbon footprint and which are owned by big corporations that want the more conservative "whisky is magic, only for rich elegant gentlemen, so much history, so much heritage, so much legacy, innovation is bad etc."
In that regard there would be three groups of distilleries on Islay
      1) corporate and cynical towards informed enthusiasts:
Lagavulin, Caol Ila (owned by Diageo), Bowmore, Laphroaig (owned by Beam Suntory) and Ardbeg (owned by Louis-Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy)
      2) kinda corporate but with a lot of freedom to innovate:
Bruichladdich/Port Charlotte (owned by Remy Cointreau), Bunnahabhain (Distell)
      3) truely independent:
Kilchoman, Ardnahoe (which was built a couple years ago and doesn't sell whisky yet)

43%, chill filtered, apparently no colour added to it... Still nonsense presentation. After releasing the 8YO I thought maybe Diageo will start moving toward the more modern consumer who wants whisky without chill filteration, without colour and at 46% or above. The 8YO and the DSR ones were a step in the right direction, this is a misstep again if you ask me. Cynical and a little insulting.

@@KNURKonesur that’s possible with some people, but I’ve been buying bottles of the 16 since maybe 2006. I can tell you without a doubt in my mind that back then it was just different. Can’t tell why, maybe the casks of that era were better, but back then it was maybe the best whisky on the market for its price.

i am VERY sad to see the trend toward 100% ex-bourbon; in less than 5 year, i am afraid 90% or more of all malts may be all ex-bb. I am of olden years, and lament the loss of ex-sherry - and - the high price attached to malts with high % of sherry cask. MAY BE I SHOULD SAVE MY OLD STOCK (of same distillery) TO MIX OR ADD TO BRING DOWN 100% EX-BB TO JUST 80-75% . . .

Yawn 10yr 43% how the hell wants this apart from the accountants,
What we want is a 10yr old cask strength standard bottle like the glenallachie 10 cask strength,
10 year old cask strength at a reasonable price is what the drinkers want,
I no we have the 12 special which is awesome but the price is to high for a regular drinking bottle,
This 10 is another disgrace and for this price ultimate passsssssssssssszzzzzzzzz
